48 hours in Bratislava! | Blue Church, Freedom Square, Old Town, Communist Tour and more
We made it to Bratislava, Slovakia! In 48 hours we managed to see a lot of Old Town Bratislava - The Castle, Slavin Monument, a communism tour, the blue church, the freedom square, the radio tower and more! Basically Bratislava completely surprised us and had way more to offer than we originally thought. It's also super beautiful.

Bratislava, Slovakia - Neo-Nazi Protest - June 2012
Approximately 50-60 people gathered at the entrance to Freedom Square in Bratislava to protest the Pride gathering/parade. Police blocked the street to keep protesters from interferring with the parade. The neo-nazis eventually approached the police-line and lined up themselves, single file, directly in front of riot police. Nothing further happened as the protesters were mostly peaceful (with the exception of a few offensive gestures) and they eventually dispersed. Bratisava police were out in full-force throughout the area and allowed the Pride event to go off without incident. There were an estimated 3,000 marchers.

(20 Sep 2019) Hundreds of people were rallying in Slovakia on Friday as part of a global protest to urge governments to do more to tackle climate change.
In Bratislava, they gathered in the central Freedom Square.
Many were voicing their displeasure with what they say are inadequate steps taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The protest was part of climate strikes taking place all around the world on Friday.
The demonstrations are largely attended by students who walk out of class or skip school to draw attention to their cause.
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova has thrown her weight behind the protest.
Caputova, who is attending next week's conference on global warming at the United Nations, says she is welcoming their initiative.

Around 25,000 people took to the streets of Bratislava on Friday, to commemorate the investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova, who were murdered last week in Velka Maca, Slovakia.
People marched through Bratislava with banners and portraits of the murdered couple and subsequently gathered in the city's Freedom Square, where Slovak President Andrej Kiska, journalists and publishers gave short speeches. Kiska asked the crowd to observe a minute of silence for the young murdered couple.

Since those days of peaceful protest, the Slovak people have made historic progress. You regained your sovereignty and independence. You built a successful democracy. You established a free economy. And last year the former member of the Warsaw pack became a member of NATO and took its rightful place in the European Union. Every Slovak can be proud of these achievements, and the American people are proud to call you allies and friends and brothers in cause of freedom.

U.S. President George W. Bush hailed Slovaks on Thursday as friends, allies and brothers in the fight for global freedom and thanked the country for deploying a small but symbolic contingent of non-combat troops to Iraq.
In an address to a crowd gathered on a snowy Bratislava square on Thursday, Bush saluted the ex-communist country for standing with the United States and its other European allies.
The country, which shook off communism in 1989 and became independent in 1993 when the former Czechoslovakia split peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, joined the European Union and NATO last year.
Bush''s visit to Slovakia and summit with Putin at Bratislava''s medieval castle perched on a hill cap a European goodwill tour with earlier stops in Belgium and Germany.
The trip was an effort to thaw trans-Atlantic relations that became icy over the U.S. decision to use force to unseat Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

You sent peace keepers to Kosovo and election observers to Kiev, and you brought Iraqis to Bratislava first-hand to see how a nation moves from dictatorship to democracy. Slovakia officially the Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south. Slovakia's territory spans about 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 sq mi) and is mostly mountainous. The population is over 5 million and comprises mostly ethnic Slovaks. The capital and largest city is Bratislava. The official language is Slovak.
The Slavs arrived in the territory of present-day Slovakia in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the 7th century, they played a significant role in the creation of Samo's Empire and in the 9th century established the Principality of Nitra. In the 10th century, the territory was integrated into the Kingdom of Hungary. After World War I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Slovaks and Czechs established Czechoslovakia. A separate (First) Slovak Republic (1939–1945) existed in World War II as a client state of Nazi Germany. In 1945, Czechoslovakia was re-established under Communist rule as a Soviet satellite. In 1989 the Velvet Revolution ended Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, sometimes known as the Velvet Divorce.
Slovakia is a high-income advanced economy with a very high Human Development Index, a very high standard of living and performs favourably in measurements of civil liberties, press freedom, internet freedom, democratic governance and peacefulness. The country maintains a combination of market economy with a comprehensive social security system. Citizens of Slovakia are provided with universal health care, free education and one of the longest paid maternity leave in the OECD. The country joined the European Union in 2004 and the Eurozone on 1 January 2009. Slovakia is also a member of the Schengen Area, NATO, the United Nations, the OECD, the WTO, CERN, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the Visegrád Group. The Slovak economy is one of the fastest growing economies in Europe and 3rd fastest in eurozone. Its legal tender, the Euro, is the world's 2nd most traded currency. Although regional income inequality is high, 90% of citizens own their homes. In 2016, Slovak citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 165 countries and territories, ranking the Slovak passport 29th in the world. Slovakia is the world’s largest per-capita car producer with a total of 1,040,000 cars manufactured in the country in 2016 alone and the 7th largest car producer in the European Union. The car industry represents 43% of Slovakia's industrial output, and a quarter of its exports.

Massive protests demand probe into killing of Slovakia journalist and partner
(9 Mar 2018) Tens of thousands of Slovaks are rallying in massive anti-government protests across the country to demand a thorough investigation of the killings of an investigative reporter and his fiancee, and changes in government.
The protesters packed a central square in Bratislava on Friday and other rallies are taking place in dozens of other places in Slovakia as well as abroad, the biggest since the 1989 Velvet Revolution.
The organizers want foreign experts to join the local investigative team and the creation of a new trustworthy government with no people who are suspected of corruption or ties to organized crime.
Jan Kuciak's last, unfinished story was about the activities of Italian mafia in Slovakia and their ties to people close to Prime Minister Robert Fico, whose government is allegedly also linked to other corruption scandals.
Organizer Karolina Farska says: Slovakia is shaken as it has not been for a long time.
