Violent mass brawl erupts at UK's notorious Atherstone Ball Game: Extended
Violence breaks out in a small English town during a medieval Shrove Tuesday tradition.
The scuffles took place in Atherstone, Warwickshire during the 820th Atherstone Ball Game, as hundreds of eager competitors battled to gain control of a sphere.
The town has a population of around 10,000. It's a dog-eat-dog event, with contestants using all means necessary to be in control of the ball, from punching and kicking their way through crowds, to climbing on the surrounding buildings to gain an advantage.
The game dates back to the medieval times and the two main rules are that (fortunately) you are not allowed to kill anyone, and that whoever holds the ball when time is up is declared the winner.
In its early iterations a bag of gold was used instead of a ball. The game lasts for two hours.

September 1902 - Fair in North England, Leeds (speed corrected w/ added sound)
This is an agricultural fair in Leeds in September of 1902. It's a strange look at time long since past, and it has survived in real good condition. I put in some sound ambience and atmosphere to give it the feeling of peeking through a time machine...this is likely as close as we'll ever get! The film is from the Mitchell and Kenyon collection

Heavy rain has caused more flooding in northern England, with homes evacuated in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and rivers overflowing in Manchester and Leeds.
Damage has included the destruction of a former pub in Greater Manchester, and a large hole has appeared in the M62.
The Met Office has issued two severe weather warnings, meaning danger to life, for further rainfall.
More than 300 flood alerts and warnings - 22 of them severe - are in place across England, Scotland and Wales.

The Met Office said the heaviest rain was expected on Saturday morning, with rainfall easing in the afternoon.
But it added: A further spell of heavy rain is then likely this evening before a clearance takes place from the Northwest.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: A severe flood warning means danger to life. It doesn't mean 'come and have a look'! Please don't come to visit Whalley or Ribchester now.
Ribchester resident Alan Tomlinson told the BBC the situation was pretty grim with many homes at risk of flooding.

Dramatic moment armed police tackle gang with knives and SHOTGUN
CCTV picked up the gang as they were given the fearsome weapon from contacts in a BMW in the Castle Vale area of Birmingham last year. Armed police flooded the area and, as filmed by officers' body-cameras, they forced two of the gang onto the ground and caught another as he tried to climb over a fence. The sawn-off shotgun, which police say could have further fuelled the city's spiralling violence, was found hidden behind a wheelie bin nearby.

Yorkshire gardener stunned as powerful tornado forms above house
Today is expected to bring sunshine and showers for much of the country, with conditions gradually improving into the weekend as temperatures reach 77F (25C) in the South East of England by Sunday. The mercury will rise even further into next week when 90F (32C) is possible by Wednesday - representing a stark change to the wet weather that has plagued the country for much of June. Saturday and Sunday are likely to be mostly dry, but forecasters warned severe thunderstorms and downpours could again return on Sunday and next Monday - potentially bringing further disruption to the country. Most of England and Wales is under a thunderstorm warning from 3pm on Sunday until the end of Monday amid fears over more flooding and power cuts when up to 1.6in (40mm) of rain falls within two to three hours. FAQ
Q. Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A. We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Tour of the North - bike packing around the North of England
When I read the book 'One Man and His BIke' by Mike Carter, I was inspired to start doing multi-day rides and bike-packing/touring. So during May in 2019 I undertook my first bike-packing trip, and decided to cycle around the North of England, over four days.
I planned a route that started and ended in Leeds, traveling via Whitby (using the Cycle Network from Scarborough), across to Darlington (where I am from), further West to Kendal (to achieve Coast to Coast) and then back down to Leeds.
The aim for the route was to be 100Miles a day on average, but I trimmed this down due to the amount of climbing required in the areas I would be cycling through, namely day 02 in the North York Moors, and Day 03 in the Yorkshire Dales; which were both brutal days due to additional headwinds.
If you too, would like to ride these routes, here are links to them on Strava:
Leeds to Whitby -
Whitby to Darlington -
Darlington Kendal -
Kendal to Leeds -
Doing this ride, has opened up the idea to me that multi-day riding is more than possible, and has made me want to do it more, including trying North Coast 500, and LEJOG one day.
Finally, the video was shot on a GoPro Session 5, edited using Adobe Premiere Pro, coloured using Red Giant Looks, and the music was 'Shibuya' by 'Bad Snacks'.
A Simple Question: 'The Rise of Poverty in the UK'
This programme was produced by Aparat Ltd for Press TV
The incomes of the poorest households in the United Kingdom slumped again last year following a rising trend of poverty, which has continued to spread across the country, new data released by a British think tank suggest.
The statistics provided by the Resolution Foundation showed that there are over eight million low and middle-income households in Britain, just under half of which have children. It said UK households in the lower half of incomes typically earned around £14,900 in 2003, adding that figures had fallen to £14,800, according to a research conducted in 2016-17. However, the report shows that it is not just poorer households, which have been facing a pay squeeze.
On average, incomes for all households in 2017/18 increased by just 0.9%, the lowest rise for four years and less than half the average between 1994 and 2007, just before the financial crisis.
For the poorest third of households, incomes have actually fallen by up to £150 in the last year, increasing fears for many parents who have responsibilities including buying food for their children and paying the rent.
The Resolution Foundation report also said that surveys they conducted revealed that over 40% of low to middle-income families feel they would be unable to save £10 a month and over 35% would be unable to afford a holiday for one week with their children. This illustrates that the ability to save money for the majority of UK families is not possible, lowering the quality of life for millions of Britons.
The think tank’s projections suggest real incomes for the poorest third of the working-age population fell in 2017-18 by between £50 and £150 as inflation eroded incomes and government cuts to tax credits and benefits finally began to bite. For the rest of the population incomes were stagnant. Inflation spiked above 3 per cent last year, mainly thanks to the record slump in sterling in the wake of the Brexit vote, while average wages remained weak by historic standards.
The foundation also calculates the official poverty rate – defined as those families living on incomes of less than 60 per cent of the median after accounting for housing costs – rose from 22.1 per cent to 23.2 per cent, the biggest single year jump since 1988. However, Resolution said this jump was “dwarfed” by the increase in the child poverty rate, which shot up in 2017-18 from 30.3 per cent to 33.4 per cent.
“2017-18 was a strikingly bad year for lower income households as the 2015 package of benefit cuts began in earnest, in combination with higher inflation,” the think tank said.
As part of its drive to eradicate the overall deficit, the Conservatives have, since 2015, frozen the nominal value of tax credits, child benefit and housing benefits. The unexpected spike in inflation after the Brexit vote has accentuated the pain.
However, Resolution’s latest “Living Standards Audit” goes considerably further this year than in previous editions, delving into the question of how well official data captures the true UK picture.
It points out that grossed-up survey data of benefit spending does not match total government reported outlays and argues that, if one statistically adjusts for this, the picture of the past 15 years on incomes and poverty changes quite considerably in some respects.
First, it suggests that child poverty fell in the 2000s more rapidly than currently thought, dropping from 3 million to around 1.6 million. If correct, this implies that the previous Labour government actually delivered on its pledge to halve child poverty, despite the official verdict that the target was missed by some 600,000 children.
Second it suggests that child poverty has actually been rising since 2011 at double the rate implied by official data (although the level of child poverty today would also be lower at around 25 per cent rather than 30 per cent).
“Reducing child poverty has been a goal of politicians from all parties in recent decades. But our analysis shows that child poverty is likely to have risen last year, and that rises since 2010 have been underestimated in official government data,” said Adam Corlett, senior economic analyst at Resolution.
Despite the revised Resolution income series, the think tank still estimates that median incomes began stagnating in the years before the 2008-09 financial crisis, following exceptionally strong growth in the late 2000s. It attributes this slowdown to rising housing costs, a fall in hours for low-skilled male workers, a slowing of benefit increases and a larger share of incomes going to the top 1 per cent of earners.
Cities Skylines - Realistic European City - Part 1 - A British City
Good day to you all and welcome to this Cities Skylines series. Here in Wetherby we are trying to build a realistic european city in the city builder game Cities: Skylines. Inspired by Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton, we are hoping to create a realistic british city. Enjoy!
Wetherby, which this city is called, started already one year ago. Back then it was inspired by cities further north in the uk, like York, Leeds and Manchester, however the project ended after a few months. But now i'm finally back doing what I love in Cities Skylines, detailing and creating something realistic.
In this episode we are creating the motorways around Wetherby. The interchange that we are building is inspired by the interchange between the A27 and the A23 leading north towards London. This will most likely be our main entrence point in the city, and so far it works great. I have already made to more episode, I only need to do the commentary and the ending cinematics to finish them up, so consider subscribing to get a chance to see them the moment they go live.
Would love some feedback too. I don't live in Britain, so if you're british don't hesitate to head down to the comment section and give me some tips on how to create a realistic british city. All I know is from Google Maps, which I have learned a lot from, however it is sometimes not enough in certain areas.

Visit England - Go A Little Further - Motiv Edit
Promoting your own part of the world is a really big task, which we took and really enjoyed the challenge.
Our Visit England ‘Go a Little Further’ film is a promotional piece, part of a trilogy of films made for Visit England highlighting the Northern Powerhouse areas. The film features wonderful areas such as Robin Hoods bay and Whitby in the east, fancy restaurants and haircuts in Liverpool to historic landmarks captured with a bird’s eye view. Yorkshire sit proudly within the film with quite a few recognisable locations included.
Fun, engaging and eye opening, we all wanted to produce something that showed the unfamiliar as well as the familiar to the international audience. A little glimpse in to the eclectic scenery and modern environments of our Northern region.
The film has been well received on international stages, it’s been show at conventions in Europe and the USA and is even one of the films shown to US travelers onboard flights to the UK on Thomas Cook flights. The talk show ‘Ellen’ is participating in a USA wide competition to visit northern England and elements from the film are used within the competition marketing.
We were up against 5 other producers for the pitch to win this project, 4 or which were advertising agencies based south of the area. We were the only full service video company to go forward and ultimate win the project based on our ideas, expertise and enthusiasm that the panel could see.
We produce commercial content but being able to help advertise our own country has been a fun, hectic (filming over winter) and rewarding experience. The potential for these films to help bring inward investment and tourism to the north is quite high and we are proud to have been a part of that.

Why There Are Empty Trains Running Every Day
From Monday through Saturday, at 5:16 P.M., a train takes off from Leeds and heads for the small English town of Snaith. At first, the cars will be jam-packed with people – the usual rush hour of a decent-sized city like Leeds. But with each stop along the way, you’ll notice fewer and fewer passengers on the train.
Once you get to the final stop 55 minutes later, there will be no one else besides you. You get off the train at a station that’s equally as deserted. There are no vending machines or ticket offices, no parking lots, no taxies. It’s as if time has stood still. It’s quiet…and eerie.

SUMMARY:
- You need to buy a return ticket in advance since you can’t get one in a station without personnel. But you can only go back to Leeds at 7:01 P.M or 7:16 A.M the next day!
- These empty trains are listed in all documents as ordinary trains, so there’s no way to know how many there are. To find them, you need to search timetables for routes that trains travel no more than twice a day.
- If you find a ghost train full of people, they’re most likely adventure-seekers like you!
- Tim Hall-Smith and Liz Morali are passionate about ghost trains. Over the past 25+ years, they’ve been to almost 50 ghost stations.
- The use of passenger trains has almost doubled since 1995. More travelers are riding longer distances, yet the number of trains hasn’t gone up that much.
- Ghost stations are primarily in ghost towns. Most passengers have already hopped off by the time the train gets to the final stop because, well, nobody lives there!
- Surprisingly, it’s more profitable for rail companies to keep ghost trains running than to close them.
- To shut down any route, they’d first have to figure out how this closure will affect passengers, the transport environment, and the economy.
- There is a more positive reason why these trains continue to run – the hope that these lines will get busier.
- So, is that hope for a revival of old ghost lines worth keeping? Sure! Some routes are already seeing increased activity.
- Yes, ghost trains are a common thing for UK residents, much more so than most other countries.
- Elsewhere, an empty train can seriously scare passengers. That's exactly what happened in 2016 in Belgium.
- The train rode 7 and a half miles until another driver jumped into the moving cab and was able to stop it.
- It happened in the summer of 1911. An Italian rail company called Zanetti sent a small tourist train with about 100 passengers to travel around the country.
- It entered the tunnel but never made it out the other side! Apparently, as the train approached the mountain, a thick white fog suddenly surrounded it.
- The tunnel was thoroughly investigated. There weren’t any signs of a crash, there wasn’t a shred of evidence a train had entered it.
