From Guayaquil to Galapagos - Isabela Island
What to do in Guayaquil, Ecuador
We are on are way to the Galapagos and to get to the Galapagos you have to take a flight from Guayaquil, Ecuador. We decided to spend 8 days in Guayaquil, Ecuador before making our way to the Galapagos.
Guayaquil is the most populous city in Ecuador with 3.1 million people living there. The city is quite old, it was founded in 1538. Guayaquil is located in the south of north-andeans subduction zone, which mean’s it’s constantly under threat of major earth quakes and tsunami’s. The last major earth quake was in 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earth quake struck the region.
With only 8 day’s to spend in Guayaquil and with a variety of tours and things to do it was difficult to do all of them.
We stayed at the Wyndam hotel, it’s located in a very convenient location on the Malecon 2000. The Malecon 2000 is a beautiful boardwalk that stretches down the Guayas river. The Malecon 2000, previous referred to as the old Simon Bolivar malecon is quite old and was recently restored. There is now 2.5km of newly restored boardwalk. The boardwalk features museums, carnivals, fairs, roller coasters, IMAX cinemas, shopping, beautiful statues and architecture.
The Malecon 2000 is one of the most popular things to do in Guayaquil and attracts more than 1.5 million people per month. More importantly it’s a safe spot for tourists to roam, use their cameras and have fun with the family.
Half way down the Malecon, you can book a boat ride on a pirate ship which will take you down the Guayas river and show you the beautiful city. If you continue walking, you can leave the Malecon and just a few blocks away is Iguana Park. It’s a small cute little park with ton’s of large iguanas and a small pond with hundreds of turtles in it. We do not recommend leaving the Malecon at night. The Malecon is safe, there is plenty of security, however leaving the Malecon does bring some risks for tourists. If you plan on visiting Iguana park, please do it in the middle of the day and be cautious.
Another great thing to do is visit Las Penas, it’s a short hike to the top 444 steps in total and it will provide you with a beautiful view of Guayaquil and the rivers. Along the way you will find cute restaurants and some tourist shops.

Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world though it's comparably tiny. Beside the Galapagos Islands (which is the #1 tourist destination in Ecuador) the country has a lot more to offer, therefore I focussed on La Sierra in this video which is a paradise for landscape lovers and outdoor adventurers.
Another reason to visit the Andean region is that you have the chance to dive into the local culture and get a real feeling of Ecuador. The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.
Things to do in Ecuador covered in this video:
01) 00:36 - Otavalo market in Otavalo
02) 01:00 - Hike the Cuicocha lake
03) 01:25 - Middle of the World, Mitad del Mundo & Quitsato in Cayambe
04) 01:48 - Quito, capital & UNESCO World Heritage
05) 02:08 - Termas de Papallacta (hot springs)
06) 02:24 - Cayambe Coca National Park
07) 02:45 - Quilotoa & Shalala viewpoint
08) 03:13 - Tren Crucero & Nariz del Diablo (Devil's nose)
09) 03:47 - Inka ruins in Ingapirca
10) 04:04 - Cuenca & it's beautiful old town

Montañita Ecuador, sun, surf, sand, and parties on the beach
Playa Montañita is Ecuador's famous (or infamous depending on your opinion) party spot. It's also Ecuador's most popular beach for surfing. We spent 6 days exploring the beach, the nightlife, and the food, living off mostly ceviche, boxed wine, and coffee. Beautiful women were dancing the night away, fearless iguanas were basking in the sun. The parties raged on till 4 in the morning. In fact, one group of coked up tourists partied all night in front of our hotel taking bumps of cocaine out in public on the malecon (not something I would recommend).
Kudanlini Hostel/hotel
Montañita is a great place to learn how to surf, and at the north end of the beach has an excellent surf break for more experienced surfers. This has led to Montañita also becoming the party capital of Ecuador. Sex, drugs, crazy full moon parties, it's like a slice of Thailand in South America.

Galapagos on Your Own: Top 10 Tips!
The Galapagos are incredible, and by far my favorite place for wildlife. But it's so far and remote, and many people believe you must book an incredibly expensive cruise in order to visit. But you can see (nearly) everything with a land-based itinerary on your own by booking day trips. I did it all by myself with little Spanish, and here’s the top 10 tips to help you do it too.
Tip 1: Don’t Stress “Must Haves” 0:26
Tip 2: Book Day Trips at Travel Agencies 1:22
Tip 3: Don’t Expect 5 Star 2:44
Tip 4: The People are Wonderful 3:08
Tip 5: Things Will Go Wrong 4:18
Tip 6: Know the Boat Name 4:39
Tip 7: Cash is King 5:03
Tip 8: How to Eat for Cheap 5:53
Tip 9: Prepare 6:45
Tip 10: Don’t Be a Jerk 8:10
The Galapagos can be very expensive to get to, but doesn’t have to be! See how I booked round-trip in business class for $160 here:

Galapagos Islands: Bartolome Island
Galapagos Islands - Summer 2018 - Episode #10
Today we cruised from Santa Cruz to Bartolome Island, spending the day hiking up to the top of the volcanic island, snorkeling and wildlife watching. A little geology and a litter marine life… what more could you want! Enjoy!
Thanks for watching! For those interested in the logistics and cost of this trip. Check out the information below.
Logistics for Santa Cruz Island stay (4 nights/5 Days)
• Hostel North Seymour, Lobo Marino y Duncan N. 258, Puerto Ayora. 4 night stay for 2 people ($221.76 total, or $110.88 each). Complimentary breakfast and water bottle re-fills included. I booked through Expedia.com. in January (5 months before my stay). Hotel North Seymour is a cash only location, so you pay when you arrive.
• Taxi from docks to hotel (10 min trip) = $2 (you can walk… I had broken luggage)
• Highlands Tour: we used a taxi which cost $45 for two people on a half day trip. This included stops at El Chato Tortoise Reserve, Los Gemelos (collapsed craters), and the Lava tunnels. The El Chato Tortoise ranch also cost $5 to enter.
• North Seymour Dive Trip with Eagle Ray Tours $230 each with Eagleray Tours ( Due to boat repairs, Eagle Ray Tours could not run the trip. They worked with Albatros Tours ( to make sure we got on another boat for the same tour.
• Bartolome Island Tour with Eagle Ray Tours ($235 each). Full day with land and snorkeling excursions.
• Food Expenses can obviously very. We had 3 breakfasts and 2 lunches included between the hotel and tours. I purchased 4 dinners, and 1 lunches for $55 combined (no Alcoholic drinks or sodas)…and maybe another $10 of other stuff like ice cream cones and the like.
• Gratuities: I spent roughly $45 tipping on tours and restaurants.
• Ferries between Islands cost $30 one way. We booked our ferry from Santa Cruz to Isabella, and from Isabella back to Santa Cruz with Eagle Ray Tours. I recommend booking your ferry passage as soon as you can as they do fill up.
Total Cost for the Santa Cruz leg of the trip:
• $737,88 (without ferries to and from the island)
Music from Epidemic Sound
Including: Splash of Color, Like Clockwork, Rhytmic Acoustic Guitar, Tay There, and Warm Thoughts
