The Garden Museum, formerly known as the Museum of Garden History, is based in the deconsecrated parish church of St Mary-at-Lambeth in Lambeth, adjacent to Lambeth Palace on the south bank of the River Thames in London, located on Lambeth Road.
Garden Museum is currently closed for re-development and will re-open in 2017. The church originally housed the 15th and 16th century tombs of many members of the Howard family, including now-lost memorial brasses to Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk (died 1524) and his wife Agnes Tilney, Duchess of Norfolk (died 1545), and is also the burial place of Queen Anne Boleyn's mother Elizabeth Boleyn, formerly Howard.
St Mary's, which was largely a Victorian reconstruction, was deconsecrated in 1972, and was scheduled to be demolished. In 1976, John and Rosemary Nicholson traced the tomb of the two 17th century royal gardeners and plant hunters John Tradescant the elder and the Younger to the churchyard, and were inspired to create the Museum of Garden History. Garden Museum was the first museum in the world dedicated to the history of gardening.
The Garden Museum main gallery is the body of the church. The collection comprises tools, ephemera and a library. The tool collection includes items purchased at auction and donations from individuals and horticultural companies. The ephemera includes items such as prints, photographs, bills, catalogues and brochures, and gives an insight into the social history of gardening as well as the practical aspects of the subject. The Garden Museum covers the whole range of gardening, from royal gardens to allotments. In the early 1980s, a 17th-century style knot garden was created in the churchyard, planted with authentic plants of the period. In 2006, Christopher Woodward, formerly director of the Holburne Museum in Bath, Somerset, was appointed as the new director of the Garden Museum.

Its permanent collection, numbering some eight million works, is amongst the largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.
The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House in Bloomsbury, on the site of the current museum building. Its expansion over the following two and a half centuries was largely a result of an expanding British colonial footprint and has resulted in the creation of several branch institutions, the first being the British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington in 1887. Some objects in the collection, most notably the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon, are the objects of intense controversy and of calls for restitution to their countries of origin.
Leighton House Museum, London, UNITED KINGDOM
Lord Leighton was a significant British artist of the late nineteenth century and the first ever to receive a peerage. Leighton House served both as his home and studio and as a centre for the artistic community. The Jury was delighted with the way the recent restoration has recaptured the original style and atmosphere. It was this attention to authenticity which particularly appealed to us, reinstating all the remarkable interiors, from the gorgeous Arab Hall, with its fountain and collection of Islamic tiles which Leighton himself brought back from Damascus, his enormous working studio, with separate back stairs for models and dealers, to his own austere little bedroom.

Until 1997, when the British Library (previously centred on the Round Reading Room) moved to a new site, the British Museum housed both a national museum of antiquities and a national library in the same building. The museum is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and as with all other national museums in the United Kingdom it charges no admission fee, except for loan exhibitions. Since 2002 the director of the museum has been Neil MacGregor.

I had spent a lot of time in this museum when I was studying in London. It is a massive depository of everything that the British Empire has ‘gathered’ over the years. In many ways, all museums celebrate the act of collecting, and the act of collecting is, and always will be, facilitated by wealth and power. I often have mixed feelings about historical museums. These sites in which neutrality is maintained. How historians speak of their positions as keepers but not judges. I will not entertain a single perspective that colonisation can be justified. It fuelled (and continues to) so many things that the human race should be ashamed of; slavery, exploitation, wars and most of all, the act of labelling the other as the other. Anyway. I don’t know why I didn’t take off my jacket when I was making this video. I was literally boiling. Sweat has been literally spilt to make this video, aligning with all the blood and tears over centuries as secretly spoken by all the artefacts in this museum.
