UK: YORKSHIRE: TANKERS USED TO BRING WATER TO STRICKEN AREA
English/Nat
If winter in the North of England conjures up images of rain-soaked moors, think again. Yorkshire seems to have become one of the world's drought regions.
After a bone-dry summer, the skies have failed to open on England's largest county and the local water company has had to resort to using tankers to haul millions of gallons into the stricken area, to stave off water rationing.
It looks more like equatorial Africa than the bed of a dried-out reservoir in the north of England.
Water levels at the Eccup reservoir in Yorkshire are at just 20-percent; they should be four times higher.
That lack of water meant the Yorkshire Water company was faced with the prospect of rationing customers.
To avoid that, the company has resorted to the drastic measure of hauling in enough of the precious liquid from outside, to keep the county going.
The operation began in a limited way in September. In the last few days it's moved into overdrive.
This facility near the city of York was an empty site until days ago . Now a water main from the city's private supply has been tapped to fill up tankers for a thirty mile journey to an area where supplies are running out.
SOUNDBITE:
We're talking about an incident that occurs once in five hundred years. This has been an exceptional drought year. Anyone who has been in this part of the world already knows how sunny it's been. We've had no proper rainfall since March. We prepare a lot, we prepare as much as we can, yet you can't plan for everything.
SUPER CAPTION:Margaret Stewart, Yorkshire Water Director of Corporate Affairs
The water from York, and water bought in from the neighbouring county Northumbria, ends up here at the Eccup Reservoir near Leeds.
Where sheep grazed a fortnight ago, up to forty lorries at a time disgorge themselves of water.
A total of fifteen million gallons is transferred to this and two other reservoirs every day, by around six-hundred tankers working around the clock.
Yorkshire Water aren't saying how much the operation is costing. But some estimate its around 5-(m)million dollars per week.
SOUNDBITE:
Well this is alright. It's good for us like. You know it's a nice local run, you go home every night. It's a good do.
SUPER CAPTION: James Hull, Water Tanker driver
Pipes carry the H20 from the unloading point to the near-empty reservoir nearby.
Local residents suggest the current crisis and Yorkshire Water's recent privatization seem more than coincidental.
VOX POPS
SOUNDBITE:
I think it's diabolical, in this day and age. Where we've got all this beautiful countryside and we should have all this water.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop
Well I think that Yorkshire Water have made rather a mess of things, haven't they? They charge us enough and there've been leaks for quite a long time now that go on and on and on.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
Yorkshire Water insists drought measures won't cost the consumer an extra penny. Even if water stocks don't improve, the prospect of rationing has been pushed back into next year, and the company promises that until the rain does return, tankers will be plying local roads day and night.
Meanwhile the company is watching the skies and praying for rain.

York city centre, York, England, United Kingdom, Europe
York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities. The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, under the name of Eboracum. It became in turn the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained. In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy. From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2001 the urban area had a population of 137,505, while in 2010 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 202,400. The railway promoter George Hudson was responsible for bringing the railway to York in 1839. Although Hudson's career as a railway entrepreneur eventually ended in disgrace and bankruptcy, his promotion of his own railway company, the York and North Midland Railway and of York over Leeds, helped establish York as a major railway centre by the late 1800s. The introduction of the railways also established engineering in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, the railway accommodated the headquarters and works of the North Eastern Railway, which employed over 5,500 people in York. The railway was also instrumental in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who was joined in 1869 by his brother the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. Another chocolate manufacturer, Terry's of York was also a major employer. By 1900 the railways and confectionery had become the two major industries of the city. With the emergence of tourism as a major industry, the historic core of York became one of the city's major assets, and in 1968 it was designated a conservation area. The existing tourist attractions were supplemented by the establishment of the National Railway Museum in York in 1975 and the Jorvik Viking Centre in 1984. The opening of the University of York in 1963 added to the prosperity of the city. York was voted as European Tourism City of the Year by European Cities Marketing in June 2007. York beat 130 other European cities to gain first place, surpassing Gothenburg in Sweden (second) and Valencia in Spain (third). York lies within the Vale of York, a flat area of fertile arable land bordered by the Pennines, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds The original city was built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss on a terminal moraine left by the last Ice Age. During Roman times, the land surrounding the rivers Ouse and Foss was very marshy, making the site easier to defend. The city is prone to flooding from the River Ouse, and has an extensive (and mostly effective) network of flood defences. These include walls along the Ouse, and a liftable barrier across the River Foss where it joins the Ouse at the 'Blue Bridge'. In October and November 2000 York experienced the worst flooding in 375 years with over 300 homes being flooded. Much land in and around the city is on flood plains and has always been too flood-prone for development other than agriculture. The ings are flood meadows along the River Ouse, while the strays are open common grassland in various locations around the city. York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, stands at the city's centre. York Castle, a complex of buildings ranging from the medieval Clifford's Tower to the 20th century entrance to the York Castle Museum (formerly a prison) has had a chequered history. York's centre is enclosed by the city's medieval walls, which are a popular walk. These defences are the most complete in England. They have the only walls set on high ramparts and they retain all their principal gateways. They incorporate part of the walls of the Roman fortress and some Norman and medieval work, as well as 19th- and 20th-century renovations.

City of Leeds
The City of Leeds is a local government district of West Yorkshire, England, governed by Leeds City Council, with the status of a city and metropolitan borough. It has a population of 766,399, making it the second largest local government district in England by population behind Birmingham; it is also the second largest metropolitan district by area behind Doncaster.
The current city boundaries were set on 1 April 1974 by the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, as part a reform of local government in England. Opening Gateways Part 1 (The Yorkshire Portal) Nigel Mortimer
Opening Gateways Part 1 - The Settle Sundial (The Yorkshire portal)
22nd October 2012 New Horizons, Saint Annes.
Nigel brings actual evidence of an interdimensional portal between our world and 'others', very close to the North Yorkshire town of Settle. None of this is new or entirely unknown. The forces behind governments are actively suppressing this. Certain adepts throughout history were aware of these anomalies. Photographic evidence is shown, as are hints within our landscape.
Nigel has investigated UFO phenomena since 1980 after a strange encounter. Nigel is a writer and lecturer and an investigator of UFOs and has developed his psychic abilities to an advanced level. He brings to light the recent discovery of an inter-dimensional portal in the north of England -- where does it lead?

York England Tour
York England Tour. This video features a concise guide to York, emphasising things to see and do, as well as relate some local history pertaining to many of the historic structures in the city centre.
A Victorian Railway Station Today
Today’s station sits on the East Coast Mainline (ECML) that runs trains from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh as well as incorporating other routes to the South-West, Harrogate, Kingston Upon Hull and Scarborough. The current station was designed by Thomas Prosser and William Peachey and originally had 13 platforms. York station is a principal stop in the north of England providing access to the rail network. During the 1960’s the Beaching cuts axed many of the unprofitable branch lines. Prior to this, you could travel to almost anywhere by rail including rural villages.
Micklegate Bar was a prominent gateway into the city. On the approach to the bar is a stretch of straight road known as Blossom Street and The Mount. Straight roads are typical for a Roman road such as this one. Today they are adorned with properties of Georgian and Victorian periods, but even in Roman times it was one of the most affluent areas of the city. Also typical to Romans is how they buried there dead alongside roads and this Roman road is no exception to the tradition. This could possibly be because they wanted the dead to hear the living going on with their every day lives.
York St Mary’s Abbey is found in York’s Museum Gardens and is situated next door to the Yorkshire Museum. It was the largest and richest Benedictine abbey in the North of England. Henry VIII had his men pull the abbey down in the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the 1500’s. This was because he wanted to redirect funds towards military purposes and some argue simply for the crown.
York Minster and Cathedral
York Minster is both a Minster and a Cathedral. The word “minster” derives from the latin word “monastarian” and the local monks would go out to teach or minister. The reason why it is also a cathedral is because it has the throne of a Bishop. It derives again from latin “cathedra” and literally means seat, of which in York is the seat of an Arch Bishop.
The Minster’s History
The minister is managed as it were, by a Dean and a Chapter. However, the term minster is used when a church is established in Anglo-Saxon times. Some well known features of the minster is its Rose Window and Chapter House that you find at the rear of the minister. It also has a wide decorated gothic nave that contains a Great East Window that is over 600 years old. It is the largest expanse of stained glass in the country. The five sisters window is located in the north transept that is 52ft high.
York has had a Christian presence since the 4th century but it is believed that it could be earlier due to missionaries sent from Rome. However, the first church on the site was a simple wooden construction built in 627 to baptise the King of Northumbria. Then a more substantial building was constructed that fell into disrepair. In 741 it was destroyed in a fire and another more impressive structure was constructed until it was damaged in 1069 by William the Conqueror. It was destroyed completely by the Danes and rebuilt yet again in 1080.
Walmgate Bar
Walmgate Bar is one of the five main gates to the City of York. Walmgate Bar (or gate) is somewhat unique as it is the most complete in the UK in the sense that it still has its barbican and its portcullis. The barbican is the structure on the outside of the gateway that trapped enemies between the gate of the bar and the gate of the barbican so that missiles could be hurled at them from the walls at the top of the Barbican. The portcullis is the iron grid gate that could be hoisted up and lowered down. The rear of the bar contains a white Elizabethan extension resting on two stone columns. The gate is a cafe and you can enjoy sustenance on the barbican itself.
