The Sydney Hospital is a major hospital in Sydney, Australia, located on Macquarie Street in the Sydney central business district. It is the oldest hospital in Australia, dating back to 1788, and at its current location since 1811. It first attained the name Sydney Hospital in 1881.
Currently the hospital comprises 113 inpatient beds. Specialist services attract patients from all over New South Wales. It specialises in ophthalmology and hand surgery and is a referral hospital for patients requiring these services. However, it does also house a rudimentary 6-bed Emergency Department.
Sydney Hospital is associated with the University of New South Wales through its own association with St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney but is also associated with Sydney University through the Department of Ophthalmology.
The General Post Office (abbreviation GPO) is a landmark building in Sydney. It is located at the western end of Martin Place (No. 1 Martin Place), between George and Pitt Streets. The main facade stretches some 100 metres down Martin Place. In 1996, as part of the disbursement of Australia Post assets by the Federal Government of Australia, the building was sold to private owners. It was subsequently refurbished and now houses shops, restaurants, hotel rooms, and the lobby of two adjoining tower blocks. Designed by colonial architect James Barnet, the building was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891.

Glenelg - New Years - 1999
Glenelg is a popular beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Located on the shore of Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent, it has become a popular tourist destination due to its beach and many attractions, home to several hotels and dozens of restaurants.
Established in 1836, it is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia (the oldest being Kingscote on Kangaroo Island), with the proclamation of the colony of South Australia. It was named after Lord Glenelg, a member of British Cabinet and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.
Through Lord Glenelg the name derives from Glenelg, Highland (previously Inverness-shire), Scotland. In Scottish Gaelic the name is Gleann Eilg. The name Glenelg is noteworthy for being a palindrome.
Prior to the 1836 European settlement of South Australia, Glenelg and the rest of the Adelaide Plains was home to the Kaurna group of Indigenous Australians. They knew the area as Pattawilya and the local river as Pattawilyangga, now named the Patawalonga River. Evidence has shown that at least two smallpox epidemics had killed the majority of the Kaurna population prior to 1836. The disease appeared to have come down the River Murray from New South Wales.
The first British settlers set sail for South Australia in 1836. Several locations for the settlement were considered, including Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln and Encounter Bay. The Adelaide plains were chosen by Colonel William Light, and Governor John Hindmarsh proclaimed the province of South Australia at the site of The Old Gum Tree in Glenelg North on 28 December 1836.
The first post office in Glenelg opened on 5 December 1849; the first postmaster was John McDonald of the St Leonard's Inn. A telegraph office was opened in September 1859 and the two offices amalgamated in 1868.The present post office building on Moseley Square was built in 1912.
Construction of the Glenelg Institute, which is now the Glenelg Town Hall (pictured top right), started in 1875. The institute opened in 1877,with lecture rooms, a concert hall and a library. The classical structure was designed by Edmund Wright, whose works include the Adelaide Town Hall and Adelaide General Post Office on King William Street. The hall sits on Moseley Square, just off the beach. The city council acquired the hall in 1887.Today it houses restaurants and a museum, the Bay Discovery Centre. (The Rodney Fox Shark Experience has been relocated to Victor Harbor.)
In August 1857, construction of Glenelg's first jetty commenced; it was opened on 25 April 1859. Costing over £31,000 (pounds sterling) to build, the structure was 381 metres (1,250 ft) long. The jetty was used not only by fishermen but also to accept cargo from ships, including a mail service operated by P&O, until Port Adelaide replaced it as Adelaide's main port.
There were several additions to the jetty. A lighthouse was built in 1872 at the jetty's end, but a year later it caught fire and was cast into the sea to save the rest of the structure. A replacement lighthouse was built in 1874, and was 12.1 metres (40 ft) tall. Other additions included public baths, an aquarium, a police shed and a three-story kiosk with tea rooms. The kiosk structure also housed a family.
The kiosk was wrecked in a storm in 1943, and the entire jetty was destroyed by a freak cyclone in 1948, most of the structure washed away and the rest unsafe. Just two weeks later, the local council began drafting plans for a new jetty and construction was completed in 1969. The new structure was just 215 metres (705 ft) long, less than two-thirds of the original jetty. The second jetty continues to stand today, at the end of Jetty Road
ANONYMOUS AUSTRALIA: Australian So Gutless, Attorney Generals Non-Res
Published on 29 Apr 2012 by TheAnonymouse01
A WikiLeaks supporter sent me this response from the office of the Australian Attorney General, Nicola Roxon.
Like other Form Letter responses from Australian Labor Party MPs and Senators, it includes some fine language about general principles while pointing out that the Gillard government has managed to do the bare minimum in response to the USA's witch-hunt of Julian Assange.
Roxon's department insists the Government's role is to seek to ensure due process is followed and that they have obtained assurances from the Swedish Government that Mr Assange's case will proceed in accordance with due process. One can only assume that they have not bothered to examine all the facts surrounding this case in Sweden, because due process has already been ignored many times over.
The letter also notes that the Australian Government is not currently aware of any changes against or indictment for Mr Assange being planned by the US Government. Oh really?
Have they not read about the US Grand Jury investigations? Have they not seen the Stratfor emails? Of course they have! And they have also had consular officials sitting in the courtroom at Bradley Manning's court-martial, so they have heard defence concerns that Manning was being pressured to make a case against Assange. How much more will the US government be allowed to do before Australia can admit there are changes against or indictment for Mr Assange being planned by the US Government?
Finally the letter assures us that should Mr Assange be extradited to the US, the Australian Government would seek the same assurances in respect of any legal proceedings that might arise as were sought from the Swedish Government. How reassuring is that? It's virtually a promise to do nothing. Again.
Meanwhile, the Australian government is voting in new laws that will make it harder for groups like WikiLeaks to operate legally. And the Washington Post quotes a senior Australian official (speaking anonymously of course) boasting about increased military co-operation, including a new base for US Marines in Darwin.
Both major parties in Australian politics support these new laws, along with closer military co-operation with the USA, while the only party prepared to even discuss Julian Assange's dire plight is the minority Greens party. If YOU are not happy with this state of affairs, please contact your elected representatives and let them know that YOUR vote depends on their response.

The word Eternity was a graffiti tag recorded over an approximate 35-year period from 1932 to 1967, written numerous times in chalk in the streets of Sydney, Australia. The word had been written by Arthur Stace, an illiterate former soldier, petty criminal and alcoholic who became a devout Christian in the late 1940s. For years after his conversion up until his death in the 1960s, Stace walked the streets of Sydney at night writing the single word Eternity on walls and footpaths in his unmistakable copperplate handwriting. Stace's identity remained unknown until it was finally revealed in a newspaper article in 1956. It is estimated Stace wrote the word over half a million times.
Only two original Eternity inscriptions are known to exist. One is on a piece of cardboard Stace gave to a fellow parishioner, and is held by the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. The other, and the only remaining inscription in situ, is inside the bell of the Sydney General Post Office clock tower.
After Stace's death, the Eternity signature lived on. Australian contemporary artist, illustrator and filmmaker Martin Sharp noticed it and celebrated Stace's one-man campaign in many of his works. More recently, some Australian Christian groups, including those at universities, have run evangelistic campaigns whose promotion involved chalking Eternity, after Stace's fashion, on footpaths.
As part of the fireworks on Sydney Harbour to mark New Year's Day of the year 2000, the graffiti Eternity was illuminated on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This moment was symbolically beamed to billions of television viewers worldwide.
