8 Haunted Places in Springfield MO
While there are more than enough things to do in Springfield, MO., there are also some haunted places to visit if you want to be scared out of your skin…this begs a question..
If you don’t pay your exorcist, will you get repossessed?
I kid, Springfield, MO.! While we do have some awesome haunted houses during Halloween, such as Dungeons of Doom and Hotel of Terror, there are some other haunted hotels, theaters and even a University known for their apparitions.
For a fun drinking game, watch our video and take a sip every time you hear the word, “apparently.” Only if you are 21 and up though – and drink responsibly!
Haunted Places in Springfield, MO.
1. Drury University
Drury was founded in 1873, but was built on an Indian burial ground as well as being the center stage for some Civil war battles. It also stands where there used to be Victorian Homes.. one little girl was reported killed in a fire – she went back into her house to grab her teddy bear and never made it out. Some students have seen her in a little pink dress around the campus.
2. The Gilloiz Theater
It opened in 1926, and in the 1960’s rumors came out about an apparition of a little boy who hangs out by the restrooms.
There was also a projectionist named Martin who died in the projection room one fateful New Year’s Eve. People have seen shadows move through the balcony, the main floor and sometimes at the rail of the stage system.
3. Pythian Castle
The cool thing about Pythian Castle is they have ghost tours you can sign up for.
It was built back in 1913 and was many things including a senior citizen’s home and also an orphanage for a while. It was recently shown on Ghost Adventures.
I did have a friend Michelle go on a ghost tour and reveal pictures of unexplained things which were erring on the side of scary. She caught pictures of orbs and other things when she went on the ghost tour with her daughter. *shudders*
4. University Plaza Hotel
Haunted by a dude called “The Colonel” who is most often spotted between midnight and 4am. He is thought to be from the Civil War era. Another place to add to your list of haunted places in Springfield, MO.!
5. Campus Inn
Located on N. Glenstone, there are supposedly two apparitions here. One is Carl, who was a busboy and appears to be harmless. The other is a female apparition who has been known to hit and push guests. Looks like we have a poltergeist in our midst!
6. Springfield Little Theater
Rumored to have been haunted since the 1920s, a stagehand hung himself above the stage. There have been sightings of an extra cast member on stage (who isn’t supposed to be there), and shadows moving along the catwalks.
7. Walnut Street Inn
A three-story bed and breakfast, the Walnut Street Inn was built in the 1880’s and people have reportedly felt they were being “watched.” When they renovated in 1998, some things were stirred up and the activity in the home increased. Some people have claimed seeing a woman sitting at a table near the wall who disappears when you try to talk to her.
8. Phelp’s Grove Park
Apparently, a female apparition has been sighted standing underneath the bridge holding up her wedding dress. A newly-wed couple lost control of their vehicle and died in the park. She is seen standing underneath the third bridge in the park. This is a more recent finding but interesting nonetheless.

MISSOURI STATE PENITENTIARY-PRISON AND GAS CHAMBER TOUR -JEFFERSON CITY, MO-EP27
We took a 3 hour guided tour through the Missouri State Penitentiary, Gas Chamber and Warden's house. This home is preserved and used privately for special events, but for the public, now has a prison museum in the basement. It was fascinating.
You will want to go on line and figure out which of the many tours will fill you needs, and then BOOK a reservation. Costs and times vary. They even have overnight tours!
The tour was given by one of the deputies that worked at the prison for 25 years, as well as one of the nurses that worked in the prison hospital.
For most of the years that the prison was operated, all of the prisoners had to walk in single file lines when moving around the facility, and had to maintain COMPLETE silence. No talking was ever allowed, and you could only speak to a guard if HE asked you a question.
The solitary confinement area was a nightmare. One individual, who managed to live to tell about it, was in total darkness (NOT EVEN A SLIVER OF LIGHT), in an 8’ x 10’ cell, without a bed, in suffocating heat in the summer, with ZERO ventilation, with no exercise, with 5 to 10 other inmates, all competing for the food bucket shoved into your cell once a day. You were all required to SHARE the cells waste bucket!!!
Sonny Liston was one of the two famous prisoners that spent time here. The most famous inmate, which we actually forgot to highlight in the video was James Earl Ray, WHO ESCAPED, and THEN went on to shoot Martin Luther King, Jr.
We had visited Alcatraz many years prior, and this place is 100 years OLDER! It made The Rock look like a Country Club!

Fairbank Ghost Town, Cemetery, and the Grand Central Mill ~ Desert Hike
I am going to remake this video with information about the history of the area. It is pretty fascinating; a lot happened here! I don't have my microphone with me now but I still wanted to upload something for you.
Thank you for watching!
Fairbank is a ghost town in Cochise County, Arizona, next to the San Pedro River. First settled in 1881, Fairbank was the closest rail stop to nearby Tombstone, which made it an important location in the development of southeastern Arizona.
Originally the location of a Native American village known as Santa Cruz in the 18th century, the area was later settled around the time the railroad came through in 1881, and developed further when the local railroad station was built in 1882. It was originally known as Junction City, then Kendall, then Fairbanks, and was formally founded as Fairbank on May 16, 1883 on the same day that the local Post Office opened.
Due to its proximity to Tombstone, and the fact that it boasted the nearest railroad station to what was one of the largest cities in the western United States, Fairbank acted as a way point between Tombstone and the rest of the country, bringing supplies into the bustling town, and also acting as the departure point for the ore pulled from Tombstone's silver mines on its way to the mills in Contention City and Charleston. Fairbank was also home to a stage coach station on the Butterfield Overland Mail line which opened in 1885. At its height in the mid-1880s, the town housed approximately 100 residents, and boasted a steam quartz mill, a general store, a butcher shop, a restaurant, a saloon, a Wells Fargo office, the railroad depot, and a stage coach station.
When the Tombstone mines closed after flooding in 1886, Fairbank's prominence declined as the nearby mills shutdown, and the rail depot it offered became increasingly unnecessary. Subsequent droughts drove away area farmers and ranchers, further isolating the town. Fairbank was reprieved from a possible extinction when the railroad linked nearby Bisbee to Fairbank's train depot in 1889, making Fairbank an important leg in the transit of copper mined from the highly productive Copper Queen Mine. However, the flooding of the San Pedro River in September 1890 caused significant property damage, thinning down the population further.
On February 15, 1900, Fairbank was the scene of an attempted train robbery of the express car on the Benson-Nogales train by the Burt Alvord gang. Express Messenger and former lawman Jeff Milton, drove off the bandits despite a serious bullet wound sustained to his arm. The robbery was unsuccessful, and gang member Three Fingered Jack Dunlop was mortally wounded, later to die in Tombstone after confessing to the attempted robbery.
In 1901, the Mexican land grant on which the town was situated was purchased by the Boquillas Land and Cattle Company who extended the leases on only the commercial building and several residences into the 1970s.
Remnants
By the mid-1970s Fairbank was all but deserted. The final remaining residents left when the buildings were deemed unsafe. After that, the post office closed, and the side roads became overgrown and largely impassable. Some years later, in 1986, the former Mexican Land Grant was acquired by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the town was incorporated into the San Pedro Riparian NCA as the Fairbank Historic Townsite. What remains of the town of Fairbank is now open to the public. The remaining structures include:
A commercial building, an adobe structure that used to house the general store, the post office, and the saloon. The structure has been stabilized by the BLM.
The Montezuma Hotel which was built in 1889 to the south of the Commercial Building. The hotel was torn down to make way for highway construction, and only portions of its foundation remain.
A small wooden house, built in 1885, in a style common in the 1880s.
The schoolhouse, built of gypsum block manufactured in nearby Douglas, AZ, was constructed in 1920, and was a functioning school through the 1930s.
A larger wooden house, built in 1925.
A stable and an outhouse, which were built in the early 1940s as part of a Works Progress Administration project based in Fairbank.
A railroad bridge, northwest of the townsite along the San Pedro River, built in 1927.
A railroad platform, west of the townsite, along the former railroad line
In March 2007, the BLM restoration of the schoolhouse was completed, and the structure was opened to the public as a museum and information center for Fairbank.
Shortly after its founding, the 1884 population estimate for Fairbank was roughly 100 people. US Census figures, taken every ten years, show the town's population peaking in 1890 at 478 residents, then shrinking to 171 by 1900, and then increasing again to a high of 269 in 1920 before entering a steady decline which ended with the abandonment of the town in the 1970s.
