Spirit of Nevada - Gilcrease Orchard
Grab some tasty apple cider and stroll through the most fertile farmland in the Las Vegas Valley. The Gilcrease Ranch began in 1920 when Edna and Leonard Gilcrease purchased over 900 acres including natural artisan springs for cultivating crops and raising livestock. The 60 acre Gilcrease Orchard is all that remains of the ranch and has evolved into a nonprofit organization aiming to educate about local food sources giving us a better appreciation for the earth’s bounty.

HENDERSON BIRD VIEWING PRESERVE
It's 5am, it's just above freezing and the wind is practically tearing our faces off. Who wakes up this early to drive out to old water reclamation ponds to look at birds? We do!
On a cold Saturday morning in January, in the Mojave Desert just outside of Las Vegas, several friends and I paid a visit to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. I had been asked to tag along, maybe even bring a camera for a brisk walk around the Preserve. I had never even heard of this place before. And a water treatment facility turned bird sanctuary? That's so Vegas. Really it is!
This time of year, there was a copious amount of ducks swimming and feeding in and around the ponds. A friend pointed out a raft of ducks called Shoveler Ducks. They call'em shoveler ducks because they got a long broad bill and they scoop up vegetation when they dive. They 'shovel' things up, he told me. I was hoping to see a wider variety of birds, but I guess that means I'll have to come back out in the spring during nesting. We did get a short glimpse of a coyote and I think there was a reported golden eagle sighting as well. No pictures... didn't happen.
I love doing stuff like this in Vegas. It's a great alternative to what Vegas is known for. It's a great example of the marriage between natural conservatory efforts and essential water practices inherent with desert living. That's what makes it so Vegas!

Las Vegas - off the beaten path
Instead of driving the same ole path from Vegas to the border (Primm) I decided to take a dirt road and came accross a desert turtle. It was sure active and very curious of the camera. Shot with the GoPro Hero2.
Turtle was not fed or touched and when he was done investigating the camera, he continued to eat his plants and walked away.
