SUMMARY
=======
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a United States National Lakeshore located along the northwest coast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan in Leelanau and Benzie counties near Empire, Michigan. The park covers a 35-mile-long (56 km) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou islands. This Northern Michigan park was established primarily because of its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena. The lakeshore also contains many cultural features including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse, three former stations of the Coast Guard (formerly the Life-Saving Service) and an extensive rural historic farm district. In 2011, the area won the title of The Most Beautiful Place in America from Good Morning America. In 2014, a section of the park was named the Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness by the United States Congress.
The Incredible Sleeping Bear Dunes at Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in Michigan
On this Airstream Life vLog, we take advantage of our dry camping location and head into Sleeping Bear Dunes to see the sights. We decide to do the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive since we only have one day in the area and we want to see as much as we can. So we start off bright and early even though it's still a bit drizzly.
We take you to all 12 stops on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. Our favorites (along with most people's) are stops 9 & 10 which is the Lake Michigan Overlook and the Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook. WOW! We have hiked a bunch of different dunes in Idaho and Colorado but this dune is definitely the steepest. There is no way we would hike down it (and then back up). People were crawling up on their hands and knees. Apparently, a number of people get stuck every year and there are fees to be rescued. Crazy!
We really loved the drive and were very surprised to find something like this in Michigan. It reminded us of the ocean, not a lake!
Stay tuned in the next video when we head in Glen Arbor to do a little exploring.

Sleeping Bear Dunes | Traverse City History
The ice age and glacial retreat nearly 12,000 years ago shaped the land, lakes and forests of northern Michigan. Perched dunes tower above 35 miles of crystal blue Lake Michigan coastline - a contrast so large and majestic it can be seen from space. This land, now known as Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake-shore, played an important role in attracting visitors to northern Michigan.

Glen Arbor tree damage following Aug. 2 storm
The mighty and historic storm that pummeled Glen Arbor, Michigan, on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015 left many roads impassible, and Leelanau County in a state of emergency. The day after the storm, Glen Arbor Sun editor Jacob Wheeler navigated the wreckage by bike, and filed this video from different locations: Dunn's Farm Road, M-22 west of Glen Arbor, Glen Arbor itself, Alligator Hill and M-22 south of town.
