John Mar for Alderman
John Mar Biography
The Mar family traces its origins in Canada back to the 1860s when Canada itself was a still fledgling nation. Johns parents met at the University of British Columbia and settled in Calgary in 1962 where his mother continued her career as a school teacher and his father became a real estate developer. When John was born several years later, he came home from the Foothills hospital to the very home in Scarboro where his parents still live.
John attended Sunalta School, Mount Royal Junior High and Bishop Carroll High School and then earned his Degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After working in the development industry, he fulfilled a life long dream by joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served as a beat cop in Burnaby, B.C.
When John returned to Calgary, he chose to settle close to his roots, and now his own children attend Sunalta School.
John returned to real estate and development and became involved in several projects including the expansion of the Country Hills Golf Club, Panorama Hills Estates, The Bluffs at Country Hills, Country Hills Landing and the Panorama Hills shopping centre.
In his spare time, John served as President of the Scarboro Community Association and John Mar was elected to his first term as Alderman for Ward 8 in October 2007. He has a passion for community and public service. He is dedicated to help guiding Calgary into the 21st Century to make our City truly world class.
