In this video, Windy Canyon is a volcanic rock formation located in the centre east of the island that offers spectacular views of Okiwi to the north and Awana to the south.
The canyon is less than 200 m below the summit of Mount Hobson (Māori: Hirakimata)the highest point of the island at 621m above sea level.
Palmers Track winds through the canyon and then on to Mt Hobson. NEW ZEALAND

Great Barrier Island - near Auckland New Zealand - flying in & boating out
Great Barrier Island - New Zealand is East of Auckland in the Huraki Gulf – it can be reached by Barrier Air's small Caravan plane in 30 minutes or by Sealink's roll-on roll-off car passenger ferry in 4.5 hours. Great Barrier Island (Aotea) boasts white sand beaches e.g. Tryphena's Gooseberry Flat and Pah Beaches with crystal clear waters and frisky dolphins and ocean beaches e.g. Medlands beach for surf and long walks.
There's plenty of hiking on offer. The most popular tramp is through Windy Canyon to the Island's highest peak Mt Hobson (Hirakimata) - 627m / 2,057ft . Prepare for a load of steps, designed to protect the flora and fauna. Hirakimata is home to the majestic endangered Kauri (think giant redwoods). Our views were hazy due to the smoke from the large Sydney bushfires!
Cape Barrier offers a short tramp to Ruahine (Mt. Isaac) lookout at 403m / 1,322 ft. with commanding views across to the Coromandel Peninsula and down to Johnson’s Bay.
Great Barrier Island New Zealand is known for its ground nesting birds - the Tuturiwhatu - NZ Dotterel , Torea Pango - Variable Oystercatcher and penguins. The Dotterel lives in dunes and near river mouths so its best not to wander over the dunes from August to March.
The nocturnal Brown Teal Duck - Pāteke - has no road sense so please watch out for them:)
The Island's covered in salt-tolerant Pohutakawa trees (a.k.a the NZ Christmas tree). These trees can live for 1000 years but are now threatened by the possum. They flower resplendently at Christmas.
The tropical vegetation and laid-back attitude of the locals make The Barrier a special place to vist, or call home.

On, January 2, 2019, we flew EVE, a Tecnam Sierra Mk 2, accompanied by CDL, another Tecnam aircraft, to Great Barrier Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. Great Barrier is a beautiful place and an internationally recognized Dark Sky Sanctuary where you can clearly see lots of stars. Commercial flights , Britten Norman Islander's, were arriving just about the same time as us. Great Barrier Airport was momentarily 'Heathrow busy'.
