Ghost Town 360º VR Walk - Gold King Mine - Jerome, Arizona
The Gold King Mine Ghost Town is about a mile north of Jerome, Arizona. (Watch this on the YouTube app or a Chrome browser for 360º VR. )
It’s more than an abandoned mine, more than a typical ghost town.
It’s an eclectic collection of vehicles, equipment, and tools from years past.
Don Robertson’s ensemble of motorized beasts is like no museum you’ve ever seen.
I had the good fortune to visit Gold King while on a Power Wagon 4x4 safari with Ram Trucks, prior to this year’s Overland expo, and had the good mind to take my Samsung 360 out of the camera back to capture a quick walkthrough.
This is just a sliver of what you’ll find at Gold King.
Many thanks to Ram Trucks and Gold King Ghost Town.
Disclaimer: I visited Gold King Ghost Town while on a Ram Trucks media junket. This is not a sponsored video.

Jerome, AZ - Gold King Mine & Ghost Town - 360° View
The small town of Jerome, AZ, an old coal miner's town, has a ghost town about 1-mile past the main town area. The Gold King Mine & Ghost Town is located just off Jerome-Perkinsville Rd., about 1-mile past the Fire Station, which is located at the back part of town.
Jerome, AZ is about 25 miles southwest of Sedona, AZ, just off State Route 89A.
The town of Jerome, AZ is a must-see if you are visiting anywhere in the central part of Arizona.
JEROME ARIZONA - ANYTHING BUT A GHOST TOWN
On our way from SEDONA we passed through the historic mining town of Jerome which once upon a time was designated as a ghost town after the closing of its world class copper mine. Jerome has bounced back as it has become the go to destinations for many artists, writers and other creative people to once again make it a vibrant destination in Arizona. It was so popular we never did find a parking spot on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Jerome is a town in the Black Hills of Yavapai County in the U.S. state of Arizona. Founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, it is more than 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level. It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Phoenix along State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott. Supported in its heyday by rich copper mines, it was home to more than 10,000 people in the 1920s. As of the 2010 census, its population was 444.
The town owes its existence mainly to two ore bodies that formed about 1.75 billion years ago along a ring fault in the caldera of an undersea volcano. Tectonic plate movements, plate collisions, uplift, deposition, erosion, and other geologic processes eventually exposed the tip of one of the ore bodies and pushed the other close to the surface, both near Jerome. In the late 19th century, the United Verde Mine, developed by William A. Clark, extracted ore bearing copper, gold, silver, and other metals from the larger of the two. The United Verde Extension UVX Mine, owned by James Douglas, Jr., depended on the other huge deposit. In total, the copper deposits discovered in the vicinity of Jerome were among the richest ever found.
Jerome made news in 1917, when strikes involving the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) led to the expulsion at gunpoint of about 60 IWW members, who were loaded on a cattle car and shipped west. Production at the mines, always subject to fluctuations, boomed during World War I, fell thereafter, rose again, then fell again during and after the Great Depression. As the ore deposits ran out, the mines closed, and the population dwindled to fewer than 100 by the mid-1950s. Efforts to save the town from oblivion succeeded when residents turned to tourism and retail sales. Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1967. By the early 21st century, Jerome had art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum devoted to mining history.

Don’t miss the Gold King Mine & Ghost Town. The location of the historic Gold King Mine was originally the site of Haynes, Arizona, which in 1890, was a small suburb of the larger town of Jerome, one mile north. When the Haynes Copper Company dug a 1200-foot-deep shaft in search of copper, they were disappointed at the absence of copper, but miners hit gold instead. The site is now a musuem where visitors can see continuous demonstrations of antique mining equipment and the operation of a turn-of-the-century sawmill daily. Other highlights include walks in an authentic mine shaft, animals to pet and feed, a circa 1901 blacksmith shop, and the world’s largest gas engines. The Museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Facilities include rest rooms and a large parking area.
Most of what we know about the ancient people that inhabited Arizona relies on inference and circumstantial evidence. Almost everything about them is shrouded in mystery.

Jerome State Park, Arizona & Ghost Town Pickers Heaven
02-08-2015 Produced by Erick F Dircks
First stop, Jerome copper mines, gold mines, and ghost towns. We were going to book our train ride at this tourist booth. Tourist booth was a time share booth, and wouldn't take reservations. However, we thought loosing 90 minutes was worth 3/ $99 1st class tickets, and signed up. Long story short, Randy ticked off the people, they cut our meeting very short, and gave us the vouchers. We went directly to the train depot to confirm if the vouchers were good, and to all of our surprise, they were. Only problem we lost a day because train doesn't run on Monday, but we needed a well deserved break! One more day in Sedona area, I think we can manage!
