Goliad Texas
Texas is full of history. The town of Goliad should be no surprise. It's also the location of Presidio La Bahía. It was here that Fannin and his Soldiers were executed shortly after surrendering to the Mexican Army.

Presidio La Bahia - Goliad Texas
Presidio La Bahia - Goliad, Texas
A total of 342 Texas Militia members, including Colonel James Fannin were executed on March 27th, 1836 by the Mexican Army. General Santa Anna ordered the slaughter. The mass killing helped to motivate the Texan drive for independence and was used as a rallying cry at San Jacinto where Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna.

Tejano Talks #23 -The Angel of Goliad - (2017)
The Angel of Goliad is a true Texas heroine whose life story is shrouded in mystery but whose legend lives on.
She was responsible for saving more than 140 Texans, including 20 at the Goliad Massacre where 347 men under Col. James Fannin’s command were executed by the Mexican Army in 1836. The Fannin Monument in Goliad commemorates those deaths.
She was 19 and was the companion or wife of Mexican Capt. Telesforo Alvàrez. But even historians are not in agreement of her real name. She has been referred to as Panchita, Francisca, Pancheta, or Francita, and her last name as Alevesco, Alvárez, or Alavèz.
She became known as the Angel of Goliad but also referred to as the Mexican Angel of Mercy and the Second Pocahontas. A statue close to the Fannin Monument now honors her accomplishments.
After the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas’ victory over Mexico, she and Capt. Alavèz returned to Mexico. She was left homeless after Alavèz abadoned her and her children. King Ranch founder Richard King discovered her in Matamoros and brought her to the King Ranch. Her son later married and her 10 grandchildren lived in the ranch.
Her descendants number in the hundreds today and have had several family reunions. The last one in Kingsville attracted more than 250 descendants, who are now “spread all over the world.” The group also sponsors an information booth at the annual King Ranch Ranch Hand Breakfast.
Among her descendants are the famed Cavazos family of the King Ranch. Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos, and Gen. Richard E. Cavazos. Dr. Cavazos is a former president of Texas Tech University and was the first Hispanic Secretary of Education, serving under President Ronald Reagan. Richard E. Cavazos was the first Hispanic four-star general in the Army.
Her legacy lives on. World renowned artist Hugo Villa was commissioned to create a bust of her that is now displayed at Presidio La Bahia Museum in Goliad
A statue by Che Rickman stands between the Presidio and the Fannin Monument. .
She is also the central character in a painting by Everett Jenssen that hands in the Goliad State Park Museum.
A historical marker close to the site of the Goliad Massacre commemorates her heroism.
Her heroics are often forgotten but her legacy lives on in the silence of the old Spanish forts in La Bahia and Goliad and also in her descendants from the King Ranch.
The work of the Angel of Goliad is legendary and Texas owes her a debt of gratitude.

GOLIAD STATE PARK CAMPING ADVENTURE
I made the mistake of not making a reservation to Bastrop state park so we went on a detour to Lockhart state park. Unfortunately they are fully booked too. I made some calls to nearby state parks and Goliad has 5 spots left. Blessing in disguise, I love the place the first time I set foot in it. This place is full of history and has an ambience that is different from the other state parks that we went to.
