Charlottetown is the capital city of Prince Edward Island and the commercial center of the province. Infused with a heritage dating back to 1765, the island's best art galleries, theaters and museums are found in this city which radiates with the charm of its maritime heritage. Incorporated in 1855, Charlottetown is alive with the buzz of a modern urban center. Tour historic cathedrals, stroll trendy shopping and dining districts like Victoria Row and visit Province House, the seat of Island government and the official birthplace of Confederation.
Point Prim Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island, Canada
Built in 1845, the Point Prim lighthouse is the first and oldest lighthouse on Prince Edward Island and one of only a few round brick lighthouses in Canada. In the early 19th century, sea trade between Canada and Europe increased rapidly and so did shipwrecks and disasters at sea. As Charlottetown grew it required more merchandise and as shipping traffic increased, so did the number of shipwrecks along our shores. The demand for a guiding beacon into Charlottetown Harbor peaked in 1841, when the colony’s General Assembly was petitioned by concerned merchants and ship owners. There was great debate about where the Lighthouse should be built. Lieutenant Governor Charles Fitz Roy wrote letters to captains of the Royal Navy requesting their opinion. Finally it was agreed that the best place for general use in navigating the Northumberland Strait, would be Point Prim.
It took 3 years for the Assembly to agree upon and appropriate the proper funding and location for a lighthouse. Finally in 1844, an advisory committee, submitted a report, recommending a tower, 60 feet in height. At that time, the prominent architect Isaac Smith, who had designed Government House and would later design Province House, drew up the plans for the lighthouse tower. On March 31, 1845, a committee appointed by the House of Assembly, of 22 men travelled 16 miles over the ice in 10 horse drawn sleighs for the purpose of surveying the site for the intended lighthouse. The group, led by William Douse local MPP and agent for Lord Selkirk, included architect Isaac Smith and the land surveyor L.W. Gall. The Point Prim acreage was owned by the Earl of Selkirk. It was his Lordship’s wish to donate this 9 acre property to the Colony for the prestigious Point Prim Lighthouse.

PEI Royal Tour: Charlottetown
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Province House, Great George Street, and Confederation Landing during the Charlottetown portion of their Prince Edward Island tour.
A little rain did not dampen the spirits of the thousands of Islanders that came out to see the Royal newlyweds.
Highlights of the Charlottetown visit included: a speech from Prince William, a Young Company performance of The Talking Stick, and the driving of the State landau.

Since the 60s, the Confederation Centre of the Arts is a cultural center, with a museum on the history of the colonies, art galleries and a library.
The Fanningbank building is the seat of the governor, who is the representative of the Queen with mainly representative tasks. The actual government functions are carried out by the Premier.
Next to the Fanningbank building is the Beaconsfield Historic House, often described as the most beautiful building of the town. It was built in 1877 by a shipowner who sold it after his bankruptcy to a photographer. Today it is open to the public.

Im Province House, offizieller Name heute Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum, fand die historische Konferenz von 1864 statt, die zwanzig Jahre danach zur Gründung der Föderation der britischen Kolonien führte, deren wesentliches Element eine eigene Verfassung war.
Das Confederation Centre of the Arts ist seit den 60er Jahren ein Kulturzentrum, mit Museum zur Geschichte der Kolonien, mit Kunstgalerien und einer Bibliothek.
Fanningbank ist der Sitz des Gouverneurs. Dieser hat, als Vertreter der Queen im wesentlichen repräsentative Aufgaben. Die eigentlichen Regierungsaufgaben werden vom Premier wahrgenommen.
Neben Fanningbank befindet sich, oft als schönstes Haus der Stadt bezeichnet, ein Gebäude namens Beaconsfield. 1877 wurde es vom einem Reeder gebaut, nach dessen Konkurs von einem Fotograf erworben. Heute ist es öffentlich zugänglich.
