The Mille Lacs Indians , also known as the Mille Lacs and Snake River Band of Chippewa, are a Band of Indians formed from the unification of the Mille Lacs Band of Mississippi Chippewa with the Mille Lacs Band of Mdewakanton Sioux .Today, their successor apparent Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe consider themselves as being Ojibwe, but many on their main Reservation have the Ma'iingan as their chief Doodem , which is an indicator of Dakota origins.Mille Lacs Indians, because of their mixed Chippewa-Sioux heritage, have become the cultural linch-pin linking the two former warring Nations into a single people, providing Ojibwe culture and customs to the Dakota just as providing Dakota culture and customs to the Ojibwe. All of the Drums held among the Mille Lacs Indians are of Dakota origins, singing Dakota melodies but translated into Ojibwe.

Benjamin calls for tribe to regain self-reliance - Brainerd Dispatch MN
ONAMIA — A story of strength, unity and hope coupled with self-reliance was the theme of the 29th annual State of the Band address delivered Tuesday by Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
The State of the Band address was also the opening of the third session of the 15th assembly of the Band.
Benjamin addressed more than 1,200 members of the band at Grand Casino Mille Lacs with a call for a return to a tradition of self-reliance by becoming competitive in the American economy. Our goal must be economic self-sufficiency, she said. I believe the key to economic self-sufficiency is to diversify our tribal economy.

The Turtles continue to be the signature headliners of the Happy Together Tour 2018.
