Iconic Gray Line Shuts Down
VICTORIA - It's the end of the line for 35 Gray Line West employees, who said their goodbyes Thursday after being told they're out of a job. The news hit Cal Nicolson pretty hard - he's been with the company since the summer of 1974. This to me is one of the saddest days of my life. It's really emotional to see all these people out of work for no reason.
The drivers, mechanics, and office staff laid off join 48 others who were let go a month ago, and many have no sympathy for Gray Line's owner Armstrong Group, who many accuse of taking a profitable operation and running it into the ground. They could've made a profit if they wanted to, but if you ignore the business and run it like a lemonade stand, it's going to perform like one says CAW Union representative Stu Shields.
Management says Gray Line is financially challenged and a buyer couldn't be found to takeover the business. Instead three operators will divide up the Gray Line assets, including the famous double-decker buses and sightseeing coaches.
The major purchaser is Transportation Management Services based in Maryland. The company operates Horizon Coach Lines in Vancouver, Seattle, Miami, San Diego, and has a small office in Victoria. But now, after buying up a portion of the Gray Line fleet, TMS has big plans to serve cruise ship passengers in the capital.
Horizon expects to hire 30-40 new employees in Victoria, but isn't sure if it will be keep using the Gray Line name on the double-decker buses, or for sightseeing tours to Butchart Gardens.
Former Gray Line staff are welcome to join the public at an upcoming job fair for the positions opening up at Horizon. Open interviews are being held at Ogden Point Friday between 11:30am - 2pm, 4:30pm - 7pm, and Saturday between 10am and 2pm.

Discovering Canada | Sightseeing Killer Whales in Victoria
In this segment David Whitehill visits Victoria, Canada and gets to see killer whales up close whilst on a sightseeing tour before venturing to the iconic Empress hotel to enjoy some afternoon tea.

See below for a transcript from the video:
Nestled on Vancouver Island is the colonial city of Victoria. We’ve traveled here with Scenic to explore one of Canada's favourites. It's a mix of old world charm and new world experiences these waters out here off Victoria are renowned for being some of the very best in the world to view killer whales.
There's about 80 resident animals out here, at certain times a year you virtually guarantee that you’re gonna see them doing their thing.
Our boat ride out is watched very closely by all sorts of curious creatures as we head about an hour off the coast.
Tour Guide: “The whales we’re looking at today are the southern resident Killer Whales. They’re unique to this area, Southern Vancouver Island and the surrounding waters for a number of reasons, But this is the main habitat.”
Being this close to such amazing wild animals is something you’ll never forget.
For a quaint harbour city, Victoria offers a huge range of experiences. Scenic makes sure there’s plenty to keep you busy. From touring through Chinatown, to visiting the stunning Butchart gardens. If you have even a remotely green thumb, welcome to paradise. Amazingly enough this property was once a stone quarry. and the Butchart family turning it into this 55 Acre masterpiece. I’m sure Mr Butchart’s weekends were never the same again.
The main site that everyone wants to check out while they’re here is the beautiful Fairmont Empress hotel. It was built over 100 years ago and I do have to say she’s looking quite radiant in her old age. And she’s hosted royalty and movie stars from right around the world. Because we’re here with Scenic guess what? This is where we’re staying. The Empress has been a Victorian icon since it was built in 1908. A stay here is like you’re virtually stepping back in time.
One of the most popular experiences here is the traditional afternoon tea. You’re in good company as the tea’s been served up to the likes of Shirley Temple, John Travolta, and the Queen. And now close to 600 visitors a day come to enjoy this little slice of history.
As one of your Scenic Freechoice activities, you can leave the serenity of Victoria and test your nerves on the zip lining adventure. The course is set out to zip line you across at speeds of up to 60km per hour. If you feel the need to get the blood pumping. This may be the perfect way to round off your holiday.

Victoria British Columbia Canada Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour
Anytime you can take a hop on hop off tour bus it's worth the money. We got to see all of the city, and the surrounding areas. I like it because you can hop off the bus if they mention something to see in the area, they give you inside tips to what is available to see. When you're done you can resume the tour on the bus without paying another fee or some other such thing. Victoria is a beautiful city full of gardens, flowers, and nice friendly people.
