Great Dixter - House & Gardens - Northiam, East Sussex, England, UK.
Great Dixter is a house in Northiam, East Sussex, England. It was built in 1910–12 by architect Edwin Lutyens, who combined an existing mid-15th century house on the site with a similar structure brought from Benenden, Kent, together with his own additions. It is a Grade I listed building. The garden, widely known for its continuous tradition of sophisticated plantsmanship, is Grade I listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
Great Dixter was the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd – it was the focus of his energy and enthusiasm and fuelled over 40 years of books and articles. Now under the stewardship of Fergus Garrett and the Great Dixter Charitable Trust, Great Dixter is an historic house, a garden, a centre of education, and a place of pilgrimage for horticulturists from across the world.

Great Dixter - the Long Border (27 June 2019)
Great Dixter is one of the great plantsman's gardens in England; originally created by Christopher Lloyd - providing lots to interest the botanical artist! One of its best features is the 'Long Border' - which I try and draw at least once a year....

Winter Lecture Series - Aaron Bertelsen, Gardening at Great Dixter
Aaron's love of gardening dates to his New Zealand childhood, working in his grandfather's vegetable garden. Arriving in England in 1996 to volunteer at Great Dixter, he earned a Diploma in Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, then spent two years at Jerusalem Botanical Gardens, where he is still a trustee. Bertelsen returned to Great Dixter in 2005 and is regularly invited to speak about gardening at events worldwide. This spring, his garden-to-table recipes will be published in The Great Dixter Cookbook.

Arriving at Dixter
Great Dixter is one of my favourite places in the world. Has been for nearly 30 years. I’ve been delirious happy there and horribly stressed. In that house and garden I’ve experienced high affirmation and crippling self doubt. My months there were amongst the richest in my life. Check out the video of Ash and me as we travel the last few kms before arriving last year. Lets just say I was a little bit excited…

GREAT DIXTER:
Made famous by Christopher Lloyd - raised and died at Great Dixter - one of the most remarkable gardener and brilliant garden writer. His father, Nathaniel Lloyd, bought the estate in 1910 and with the help of the renowned architect Sir Edwin Luthens he extended the house and laid out the new garden in the Arts and Crafts spirit. In 1954, Christopher Lloyd returns to Great Dixter perpetually creating new test-beds for new plants and new arrangements. His Long Border (4.5m deep and 60m long) is 'an exuberant, constantly changing array of plants, with foliage of different kinds, and a very long season of interest, at least from April to October' (Taylor, 2008, p:126). One of the greatest charms of Great Dixter is the mixture of formality and informality as Lloyd respected good ideas from the past but also looked into the future, pioneering a new taste for dramatic and brilliant. The gardens exhibits several meadow-like areas with countless crocus, primroses, quamash, snake's head, narcissus; the tropical garden showing 'cannas, brilliant dahlias, tender hedychiums and bananas, and New Zealand flax, all revealed through diaphanous veils f tall Verbena bonariensis.
BODIAM CASTLE:
One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in 1385 as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore, and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the top of the towers. In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind.
