Boating From Mackinac Island To St. Ignace, MI.
Mackinac Island (/ˈmækᵻnɔː/ MAK-in-aw) is an island and resort area, covering 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) in land area, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was home to an Odawa settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position as a center on the commerce of the Great Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the site of two battles during the War of 1812.
In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Much of the island has undergone extensive historical preservation and restoration; as a result, the entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is well known for its numerous cultural events; its wide variety of architectural styles, including the famous Victorian Grand Hotel; its fudge; and its ban on almost all motor vehicles. More than 80 percent of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park
The island can be reached by private boat, by ferry, by small aircraft, and in the winter, by snowmobile over an ice bridge. The airport has a 3,500-foot (1,070 m) paved runway, and daily charter air service from the mainland is available. In the summer tourist season, ferry service is available from Arnold Transit Company, Shepler's Ferry, and Star Line Ferry to shuttle visitors to the island from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.
Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles during winter, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles. Travel on the island is either by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. Roller skates and roller blades are also allowed, except in the downtown area. Bicycles, roller skates/roller blades, carriages, and saddle horses are available for rent. An 8-mile (13 km) road follows the island's perimeter, and numerous roads, trails and paths cover the interior. M-185, the United States' only state highway without motorized vehicles, makes a circular loop around the island, closely hugging the shoreline.
The island is the location of Mackinac Island State Park, which covers approximately 80 percent of the island and includes Fort Mackinac as well as portions of the island's historic downtown and harbor. No camping is allowed on the island, but numerous hotels and bed and breakfasts are available.
The downtown streets are lined with many retail stores, candy shops, and restaurants. A popular item at the candy shops is the locally produced and nationally known Mackinac Island fudge, leading to tourists sometimes being referred to as fudgies. Many shops sell a variety of fudge, and some of the confectioners have been operating for more than a century. The popularity of the fudge has led to the sales and marketing of Mackinac Island fudge not only throughout Michigan but outside the state as well

Turnip Rock – a Rocky Remote Islet on Lake Huron, USA HD 2014
Turnip Rock, Michigan, USA. Found on Lake Huron, the rock is a truly unique natural wonder. Carved by the thousands of years of consistent waves bashing the rocks, today Turnip Rock stands in the shallow waters and attracts visitors.
Growing trees and other vegetation on the top of the island make it even more admirable. However, the shore is private property, so the best way to see the rock is from water. Tourists get there by boat or kayak from Port Austin. The site indeed promises a great adventure!

Let's Visit Island State State Recreation Area (Winter)
This video was recorded back in January where I return to Island Lake State Recreation Area near Brighton, MI with snow on the ground. I check out sights along the Huron River, Spring Mill Pond, Island Lake, etc. I also take a short hike along one of the trails. After looking back at this video, it was hard to believe we had snow this year as this past winter was extremely mild for southern Michigan.
Fun Fact: This is the first video where I begin editing with Pinnacle Studio.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

TUTTLE MARSH BIKE TOUR: SUMMER 2009 - TAWAS, OSCODA, MICHIGAN
One of the most beautiful places in Michigan, is to me, Tuttle Marsh located on Old US 23 between Tawas and Oscoda. These images were made by Dennis Morrison Sr., in the summer of 2009 while he was staying with his son Dennis for the summer in Tawas. Twice a week Dennis Sr. would get up early and bike from Tawas to Oscoda (and back!!!!) always taking Old US23 and the twisting dirt road through Tuttle Marsh. He has described morning there as being close to heaven! He also found a sandy blow out where he would stop for a break and discovered the ground to be littered with Indian artifacts. Be sure and check out our other video, The Tuttle Marsh Lights, also here on You Tube at Thanks for stopping by and know you are always welcome at the Small Lake Michigan Historical Society and Time Hopper Productions. Traverse City: Sleeping Bear Dunes in 360
The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—part of the National Park system since 1970—is a cocktail of extensive blue skies, verdant trees, white sands, and deep blue freshwater. Situated on Lake Michigan, just a short drive west of Traverse City, these pristine white-sand beaches are an awesome place to go for a hike or to sit around a bonfire watching the sunset. The landscape is as awe-inspiring as it is unexpected.
