Montana's Backroad to Yellowstone
Open space and wildlife. Cowboy towns, fly-fishing, and great food. Things to do and places to stay. Roll down US Highway 287 on Montana's Backroad to Yellowstone!
You have discovered the Backroad to Yellowstone in southwest Montana where there are so many things to do! Take your vacation in a new direction through the Madison Valley and find unspoiled landscapes, untamed wilderness, pristine lakes and abundant wildlife. Learn the story of Quake Lake and the geology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Visit Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park for a 2-mile hike and tour of the caverns. Stop for a picnic at one of several fishing access sites along the clear, rushing Madison River. Camp, hike or ride horseback in the quiet of the non-motorized section of the Beaverhead National Forest. Fish, raft, kayak and swim in the warm months. Or come for winter and snowshoe or cross-country ski through some of the most peaceful forests in Montana – followed by a soak in the Norris Hot Springs while you listen to live folk music.
Ennis is a year-round western town in the heart of the Madison Valley with unique shops and galleries, delicious restaurants and distinctive lodging – all one-of-a-kind and owned by the folks greeting you on your arrival. Explore our Main Street and take a sip at a local distillery. Belly up for a brew at a cowboy bar with a hitching post. Shop for wholesale silver jewelry, western boots, fishing and hunting gear and locally sourced gifts. As you wander, pick up a guide and take in the outdoor art walk. Dine upscalewith fine wines, have a piece of home-made pie or try a fresh scone with a local latte. Any time of day there are great spots to satisfy the foodie in you. And when you are ready for a great night’s sleep, choose from budget friendly motels, a remote retreat or complete your Montana immersion with a stay in a fishing cabin or fishing lodge with all the modern comforts.
More things to do? Well, of course. Events – lots of them! Most famous is the 3rd and 4th of July parade and rodeo in Ennis, but also the Art Festival, the Brew Fest, the Ennis-on-the-Madison Fly-fishing Festival and Hunters’ Feed for starters. What else? How about golf course at 5000’ for long drives, a first-run movie theatre and a bowling alley? Ennis offers the traveler all the services you need to keep your vacation on track, but there is still more to explore.
Historic towns are tucked in the mountains between the Madison and Ruby valleys are the living and past reminders of the wild-west days of gold fever. Virginia City lives on as you walk the boardwalk and peer into the windows of the past –literally. Nevada City boasts a Nickelodeon museum with dozens of music machines and a walking tour of authentic western buildings, including a two-story outhouse! Ghost towns and the ghosts of the past are everywhere. At night there are even more things to do! The Brewery Follies and the Virginia City Players entertain with vaudeville, plays, song and dance. Events in Virginia City include the Victorian Balls, a motorless parade and historic stagecoach tours of the town and Boot Hill. In Nevada City, live reenactments of the days of vigilante justice play out giving travelers a glimpse of frontier justice and the true wild west.
Exploring the Backroad to Yellowstone along US Hwy 287 will take you out of your routine and give you a chance to take in a big slice of all that Montana has to offer. There are things to do, places to eat and stay and sights to see. Take your time, breath deep and leave refreshed!

In Tune: A Community of Musicians
A celebration of old-time music and its history in the Mountain State.
Produced by WVPB filmmaker Russ Barbour and narrated by Mountain Stage’s Larry Groce, this new documentary examines old-time music, specifically in the hills and valleys of Appalachia, especially in the Mountain State and particularly in Clay County, home to some of West Virginia’s most distinguished practitioners.
The documentary also considers the homogenization of customs and music culture; the impact of the American Folk Revival; rediscovery of old-time musicians; the arrival of back-to-the-landers in Appalachia; growing popularity of old-time music festivals.
RV Trip Planning | RV GPS | Full Time RV | Changing Lanes!
One thing we were concerned about before we started living in our RV and traveling full time was finding locations to camp. We just plan ahead, and this is how we do that!

UPDATE (November 2019): We still LOVE our Rand McNally GPS, but TechnoRV has switched to Garmin. See this article ( for more details.
We'd heard lots of warnings about never getting into national parks, state parks, etc. Well, we were in over 45 locations last year all over the East coast of the U.S. and about 15 so far this year out west. We've never had an issue finding a site, and we've stayed in Campgrounds, RV Parks, State Parks, USACE (US Army Core of Engineers) Sites, etc. Yes, National parks are much more size restricted, but there are plenty of big rig friendly parks outside the national parks! We just plan ahead, and this is how we do that!

########### UPDATE ####################
As this video was in editing, we got the following update from RV Trip Wizard:
We have two significant product releases/tie-ins coming out. Within a few weeks we’ll be releasing an update to Trip Wizard that includes true RV-safe routing, taking into consideration not just height, but length, width, propane (or not), tunnels, bridges, etc. It will also allow custom settings on a per trip basis, so if you want to plan a trip without the RV, or with a different RV you can, without messing up your global settings. The other big release is our RV Life App 2.0. It’s actually out now for IOS, but it’s been a soft release. RV Trip Wizard customers will be able to get this app for $10 and will allow them to access the trips they have created in RVTW, as well as turn-by-turn GPS, access to all of the campground data, articles, and even offline maps for any or all states they wish for full access when no internet signal is available.
We had a chance to play around a bit with the RV Life App, and it looks very promising!

Village of New Concord, Ohio - scenes from 1963, The John Glenn Story
Very little has changed from what is seen here. It would be great to know the names of those shown -- the present Mayor Greg Adams noted seeing Jim Burson
(The narrator is Jack Webb of Dragnet fame.) This Village is 1.5 square miles (960 acres), two traffic lights, 2,651 people, 672 households, and 376 families (per 2000 Census). In 1827, the National Road (now U.S. 40) was laid through what is now New Concord, roughly following what had been the primitive roadway known as Zane's Trace. A year later, the village of New Concord, Ohio was established by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. The Ohio General Assembly authorized the creation of a college and on April 24, 1837, Muskingum College opened (a 240 acre campus); it became a coeducational institution in 1854.
There is a glimpse of a S-bridge, built in 1928; more:

===
Hennen, my maternal grandmother's family, lived south of town -- just above where I-70 passes by. Their children were Pearl, Olive, Ruth (my grandmother), Edgar, Carl, Violet and Naomi. Peal and Herbert Dengate and Olive and Bud Best lived next to each ofther on SR83, about a mile north of SR40.
I lived to the east of New Concord -- 63374 Cabin Hill Rd -- from 1978 to 1995 with my daughters Kelly (1976) and Kasey (1978) and then wife Marsha Wagner.
Our two dogs -- golden retriever and new foundland -- enjoyed attending Muskingum University (was a collage until 2009) for days as students would let the dogs into their dorm rooms and feed them beer and pizza.

The Glory Guys (Full Movie, Western, Romance, English, Entire Cowboy Film) *free full westerns*
Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English: The Glory Guys (original title), Runtime 1h 52min, Romance, Western, September 1965.
What could be worse for two cavalry officers than to battle with native tribes? To battle each other for the same woman. During the Sioux Wars, General Frederick McCabe's 3rd U. S. Cavalry Regiment is recruiting and training men for the upcoming campaign against the Sioux. Captain Demas Harrod is in charge of the D troop. He's also in-love with pretty Lou Woodard who lives in Mule City. Lou is engaged to Sol Rogers, chief of scouts under General McCabe. Lou doesn't seem to make up her mind regarding the man she really wants. She claims to be attracted to both men. This brings the two rivals into conflict that often times ends up into fist fights. At the fort, the training of men intensifies. After the graduation, the troopers get a well-deserved leave which they spend in nearby Mule City drinking heavily and causing disturbances. These disturbances prompt the town Marshal and his deputies to try to arrest the rowdy soldiers. A general fist-fight ensues, bringing Captain Harrod and chief of scouts Rogers together on the same side of the punch-up match. General McCabe participates in a commanders'...
Director: Arnold Laven
Writers: Hoffman Birney (novel), Sam Peckinpah
Stars: Tom Tryon, Harve Presnell, Senta Berger
The Glory Guys is a 1965 American film based on the novel The Dice of God by Hoffman Birney. Filmed by Levy-Gardner-Laven and released by United Artists, it stars Tom Tryon, Harve Presnell, Senta Berger, James Caan, and Michael Anderson, Jr. The film's screenplay was written by Sam Peckinpah long before the 1965 film was made. The director was Arnold Laven. Riz Ortolani composed the score and the title song. Though a fictionalized Western based on George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, the film is almost a generic war story covering the enlistment, training, and operational deployment of a group of recruits that could take place in any time period. The large-scale film was made in Durango, Mexico, with large numbers of mounted extras and the final battle scene choreographed on 20,000 acres (81 km2) of land. The titles were drawn by Joseph Mugnaini for Format Productions. Cover versions of the title song were done by Al Caiola and sung by Frankie Laine.
