Introduction to Whitehall Roman Villa (2009)
A brief account of the archaeological excavation at Whitehall Farm Roman Villa in Northamptonshire UK at the end of it's 9th annual, one month dig.
To bring the story right up to date, see the website at whitehallvilla.co.uk. In 2010 we found a tesellated pavement (very rare in these parts) and some re-cycled roof trusses used in laying the foundations of the earlier bath house - even rarer, and possibly unique in the UK!

Halfway between #Marlborough and #Hungerford and not far from #Newbury and the #M4 lies the magnificent #countryhouse #hotel Littlecote House and in its grounds lies their spectacular #roman #mosaic.
Take a walk into their #parkland and you will fine a vast roman #villa built during the reign of #JuliantheApostate featuring a #collegium for the roman #cult of #bacchus. Stunningly well preserved this mosaic features a boss of #Persephone #Venus #Nemesis and #Demeter all circling #Orpheus. It features a unique #triconch of three asps, the only one in #Britain. This rare #pagan site was built at the very end of neo-platonism and the rise of #christianity.
The last gasp of #RomanCivilisation before the #FallofRome into the #darkages.

Gloucester part II
Gloucester has an ancient history. It was founded in AD 48 by the Romans as Glevum, and was granted its first charter in 1155 by King Henry II. One of the main attraction of town is Gloucester Cathedral, originates in the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 681. It is the burial place of King Edward II of England and Walter de Lacy. The Cathedral was used for scenes in the films Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Another interesting place is Gloucester Docks, also few churches, among them Ukrainian Catholic Church of Good Pastor.
Chedworth Roman Villa - A fascinating National Trust Property in Gloucestershire
Here's a quick snippet of our day at Chedworth Roman Villa, a fantastic National Trust property in Gloucestershire and a great excuse for a family day out in the Cotswolds. The National Trust website says:
'Chedworth Roman Villa was rediscovered by the Victorians over 150 years ago. Leading the way in archaeology and conservation, Chedworth is coming towards the end of an exciting five-year summer excavations programme.
A modern conservation building provides exceptional access to the extensive mosaic floors, hypocaust systems and bathhouse rooms. And a small museum houses a range of finds and artefacts from the villa.
As well as all this, the tranquil setting, idyllic views and rich wildlife haven gives plenty of opportunities for walks, relaxation and reflection.'
I feel I haven't done the site justice in the video as the whole place was so interesting that I hardly remembered to take any photo's at all. The mosaics, especially in the dining hall, are amazing.
The site has been so well thought out with an impressive modern building protecting some of the building and housing lots of educational material plus more outside. There are organised tours but as we had the kids we wandered round at our own pace instead and found plenty of bite sized, easy to digest information that really brought the place to life. Some staff in period costume also shared their knowledge as we went.
Even without the historical value it would also be a beautiful site for a wander and a picnic on a family day out.

Gloucester is a city and district in southwest England, the county city of Gloucestershire. Gloucester lies close to the Welsh border, on the River Severn, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the southwest.
Gloucester was founded in AD 97 by the Romans under Emperor Nerva as Colonia Glevum Nervensis, and was granted its first charter in 1155 by King Henry II. Economically, the city is dominated by the service industries, and has a strong financial and business sector, and historically was prominent in the aerospace industry.
Gloucester is located on the eastern bank of the River Severn, sheltered by the Cotswolds to the east, while the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills rise to the west and north, respectively. Gloucester is a port, linked via the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal which runs from Gloucester's docks to the Severn Estuary, allowing larger ships to reach the docks than would be possible on the tidal reaches of the river itself, which go well north of the city to Haw Bridge. The wharfs, warehouses and the docks themselves fell into disrepair until their renovation in the 1980s. They now form a public open space. Some warehouses now house the Gloucester Waterways Museum, others were converted into residential flats, shops and bars. Additionally, the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum is located in the Custom House. Next to the museum is Gloucester Yacht Club. The port still houses the most inland RNLI lifeboat in the United Kingdom.
Gloucester is made up of a variety of neighbourhoods, some of which correspond to electoral divisions of the City Council.

Gloucester is served by the M5 motorway, which runs to the east of the city. Until the construction of the Severn Bridge in 1966, Gloucester was the lowest bridging point on the river and hence was an important settlement on the route between London and South Wales. Gloucester railway station has frequent trains to London Paddington, Reading, Bristol, Cardiff Central, Nottingham and Birmingham.
