Metro to TYNEMOUTH MARKET from Sunderland and short walk to North Shields Ferry
Metro Day Trip to TYNEMOUTH MARKET from South Hylton Metro Station Sunderland is recorded to stimulate options for a low cost away day without having to drive through heavy traffic.
Low cost means just that, as its possible to buy a Metro DaySaver ticket for all zones for just £5 which includes bus travel, train travel and ferry crossings. However, it gets better if you have a bus pass, as you can convert this into a Metro Gold Card for just £12 for a full 12 months of free travel, really worth thinking about.
So on with the options for a day out. You can get off and on the Metro as you please without having to pay again, so stop off at Gateshead, Newcastle or Silver Link Retail Park, and choose to terminate your journey at either Whitley Bay or Cullercoats with both having amazing beaches.
If you do make Tynemouth to final destination, note that the market as shown in the video only operates every Saturday and Sunday.
Without the market, Tynemouth is still a good choice for a day out with its many pubs and shops and The Land of Green Ginger which is a mix of unusual shops and cafes in the old church.
Then at the beach end of Front Street is the Castle and Priory to explore, the wonderful King Edwards Bay below the Castle which has an award winning fish and chip shop right on the prom.
If you're planning to walk the route as shown in the video from Tynemouth Metro to North Shields Ferry, the distance is 2.5 miles which I did in a very leisurely 45 minutes.
However this doesn't allow for stopping off to eat at one of the many fish bars in Tynemouth or North Shields Fish market where there are many places selling freshly caught fish to take home.
Other timings are:
South Hylton Metro to Newcastle Central Station is 45 minutes, and you must change Metro trains here, but stay on the same platform and the next train will take you to Tynemouth in another 30 minutes. All the Metro trains run every 12 minutes.
The Shields Ferry runs every half hour, and its a half mile walk from the Ferry to the Metro.
However, if you still need adventure, pop into the new South Shields Library called The Word and be amazed how different a library can be, or if its market day, catch some bargains before the stalls pack up for the day. King Street is the shopping street on the way to the Metro, and the journey from here back to South Hylton takes 45 minutes changing trains at Pelaw.
So I hope that stimulates some thought and discussion on how you can adapt these to suit your own tastes, and please comment below on how you enjoyed visiting these places.

Tynemouth
Tynemouth is a town and a historic borough in Tyne & Wear, England, at the mouth of the River Tyne, between North Shields and Cullercoats. It is administered as part of the borough of North Tyneside, but until 1974 was an independent county borough, including North Shields, in its own right. It has a population of 17,056. The population of the Tynemouth ward of North Tyneside was at the 2011 Census 10,472. Its history dates back to an Iron Age settlement and its strategic position on a headland over-looking the mouth of the Tyne continued to be important through to the Second World War. Its historic buildings, dramatic views and award-winning beaches attract visitors from around the world. The heart of the town, known by residents as The village, has popular coffee-shops, pubs and restaurants. It is a prosperous area with comparatively expensive housing stock, ranging from Georgian terraces to Victorian ship-owners' houses to 1960s executive homes. It is represented at Westminster by the Labour MP Alan Campbell.
