Visiting the Green Hill Valley Elephant Sanctuary in Kalaw, Myanmar
A highlight of my trip to Myanmar was visiting the Green Hill Valley Elephant sanctuary near Kalaw, Myanmar! We could feed the elephants pumpin and other vegetables, and afterwards join them in the river to give them a full spa treatment ;-)
The Green Hill Valley team rents these elephants from their owners, and in this way give them an early retirement. There are currently 8 elephants, and the whole operation relies on donations.

NEW HQ Green Hill Elephant Camp, Care Camp for Retired Elephants, Kalaw
We arrived in Kalaw and took the opportunity to spend the day with these retired Asian elephants at the Green Hill Valley Elephant camp. This camp is owned by a family who care for disabled and retired elephants. There are 8 elephants on their site, all of which have a Mahouts (caretaker) each. GHV have 2 vets on site who regularly monitor the elephants.
First, we spent the morning feeding the elephants pumpkin and banana stems then we visited the vets for a detailed session, followed by bathing the elephants in the river. After lunch, we got to see how GHV recycle elephant poop to produce paper. Our day ended by contributing to their reforestation program by planting 2 teakwood trees and watching the Mahouts release their elephants in the forest.
Overall, it was an exciting and an educational day for us to be up close to these magnificent animals. Our experience at GHV will stay in our hearts forever and we recommend anyone visiting this beautiful country, to go visit GHV in Kalaw. GHV also support the Mahouts and their families by housing them and supporting their childrens education.

Green Hills Valley Elephant Camp, Myanmar
Myanmar, Ethical Elephant Tourism.
Green Hills Valley Elephant Camp is the best, most ethical, tourist elephant camp that our crew visited while in Myanmar last month. Please support ethical businesses. Please don't ride the elephants (unless you're the mahout and riding bareback).
Our Wildlife Biologist, @Marija Minić has nailed it once again! She eloquently describes Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp as being a very well run facility.
18 months ago in Myanmar there were only two tourist elephant camps, and now there are 22! With the heavy reduction in lumber harvesting due to a governement moratorium, there is a glut of underutilized elephants that need to be fed and cared for. These former logging elephants are finding their way into tourism. We want to be assured it's done ethically, and not like in neighboring Thailand where there was a free for all when logging was banned there many years ago. The abuse of the tourist elephants in Thailand, with few exceptions, is horrible and ranks with Kerala's Temple Elephant Industry for the levels of abuse. The exceptions in Thailand include Lek's Elephant Nature Park and Jack's Elephant Valley Project.

Green Hill Valley or Kalaw Elephant Camp
It is about 20 minutes by car (taxi) from the village of Kalaw. Entry to the camp costs $ 100 since 2015, and the taxi to get there: 35,000 Kyats. You will find taxis on the Great artery. To go there you have to ask something like chizu camp (approximate pronunciation)
The landscape to go there is sumptuous, the Burmese mountains in the mist are of striking beauty, natural, bushy.
We descend a total of 700 meters of altitude in relation to the village, the climate is therefore immediately sweeter.
With its own means of transport, it is very easy to reach from Kalaw because it is always straight downhill. The entry of the elephant sanctuary is very difficult to spot: it is indicated once engaged on The way only, not outside.
A real Elephant camp
You will be greeted by the guides, before going to the elephant rest area. The guides speak an understandable English and are very helpful.
Arriving on the spot and seeing the elephants in the distance, one can only fall under the charm of the place, a sort of atmosphere out of time that calms and reassures: it costs very dear, but one feels right away that The day will be beautiful.
The price includes a elephant ride, meals, elephant feeding and swimming with them. After the show, arriving in the morning, they leave you free to move around in the afternoon, The neighboring mountains, along the river or alongside the elephants. It is thus a whole day that one passes here in a magnificent, natural, preserved.
We highly recommend this park, which is located in Kalaw and is a good alternative to treks.

I recently got the incredible opportunity to fly over to Yangon, Myanmar and play the lead female role in a music video. Whilst there we decided to use the opportunity to have a few days holiday in Ngapali Beach, a mere hour flight away. Here is some footage from our adventure to the elephant camp which was quite the adventures, involving a van, boat ride, elephant trek through the jungle and finishing off by bathing with elephants.

Disabled elephant retreat in Myanmar
I like the idea of responsible tourism, so I decided to share this. Besides, who doesn't love elephants?
For more information, Google Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp.
An elephant camp in Myanmar is serving as a retirement home for ailing and aging elephants, giving them safe refuge in their natural habitat while attracting tourists.
At the Ngalike Elephant Camp
The Ngalike elephant camp, off the Yangon-Mandalay Highway, has provided a sanctuary for elephants and their handlers forced out of Myanmar's timber trade by last year's logging ban, and is proving a big hit with domestic tourists.
