Cote d'Oughtibridge 6th July 2014 - riding up
Riding up the Cote d'Oughtibridge about 5 hours before the Tour De France came through.
At some point my helmet slipped to the side so the picture is at a bit of an angle.
From the bridge over the River Don at the bottom to the summit took me 8 minutes. The leading bunch did it in 5. If I did it after riding from York via Holme Moss etc I'm sure it would take me at least 10 minutes!

Tour de France 2014 - Day 2 - The Jawbone - Oughtibridge
A little known climb a couple of miles outside of Sheffield city centre, Oughtibridge Lane, or The Jawbone, as it is known locally, it is a short stinging ascent that comes 15.5km from the end of stage two and therefore could prove pivotal in the outcome of the day. It is only 1.5km long but averages 9.1% in gradient and consequently is a great place to watch the race.

The Derby Tup
The Derby Tup is also known as Old Tup or the Derby Ram and is a mumming play associated with house visiting customs around Christmas time in the Sheffield area. The Tup is similar to the Hooden Horse in construction -- a head on a pole with snapping jaws and rams horns, held by an operator covered by a cloth to represent the body. The play is accompanied by the singing of the widespread old folk song The Derby Ram and is the story of how the ram is butchered and made into useful and desirable items for the local people to use. Other characters include his keeper and Beelzebub and Little Devil Doubt who solicit for donations with menaces!
Performed by the Handsworth Sword Dancers, Boxing Day 2011.

Ecclesfield's working past, as described by Industrial Heritage Boards 2 and 3
The unveiling of the second and third industrial heritage boards in the village of Ecclesfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK.
Further details, including our thanks and acknowledgements for the organisations and people who made this project possible, can be seen on our web site
The video shows us assembling the board at the entrance to Ecclesfield Park. It then shows our Chairman, John Ellis welcoming (at 02:00) the Councillors, members of the East Peak Industrial Partnership, members of the Ecclesfield Conservation Group, and Ecclesfield Residents who came out on a cold December morning to attend the unveiling.
John Ellis then introduces Professor Mel Jones who, with his wife Joan, researched and designed the boards and accompanying leaflets. Professor Jones (at 03:30) describes how Ecclesfielder's used the resources of the parish to create industries which could export to a world-wide market, including France, Australia, Russia, and the United States. He then unveils the board (at 07:00).
Together with its accompanying leaflet, this board describes the history of the North East of Ecclesfield from Nether Lane to Butterthwaite Dam, including ...
1. what is now Morrison's supermarket, the foyer of which still shows paintings of the history of the site. Until the 1980's catering equipment was manufactured here, as part of Brightside Engineering Holdings, and Moorwood Vulcan. Before that, William Green & Co. manufactured stoves, grates, kitchen ranges, hot plates, ovens fenders, and over-mantels. However industrial use of the site dates as far back as at least the 17th century, when it was a water-powered corn mill.
2. Excelsior File Works on Station Road; Union Works on The Common; and William Ridge on Cross Hill; all of which were file manufacturers.
3. The small industrial estate on Green Lane, which used to contain Oliver Cottages, but which was in the 19th century a centre of fork-manufacture, and in the 16th century contained a water-wheel and furnace.
4. The buildings on Butterthwaite Lane, which used to be part of the Brightside Foundry and Engineering company Ltd.
5. Butterthwaite Dam on Blackburn Brook, which used to be the Gibraltar Steel Works, and before that Butterthwaite Steel Wire and Pin works.
The video then shows us walking through Ecclesfield Park (at 08:00) to the board at the Mill Road entrance. Professor Mel Jones speaks (at 10:00) about this board, which with its accompanying leaflet, describes the North West of Ecclesfield, from Whitely Hall to the old Rollem site or Aldi. He then unveils the board (at 15:30), which describes....
1. Whitley Hall Hotel, situated between Ecclesfield and Grenoside, with its landscaped lake and stream, and which in the sixteenth century, used to have a water-powered smelting house and corn mill. This in turn was built on the site of a fifteenth century dam and water-wheel, which powered a grindstone for making scythes.
2. The large reservoir, accessible from Church Lane, and enjoyed by fishermen. At the end of the 19th century, this supported a steam driven paper mill, but use of the site probably goes back to the water powered corn mill used by the Monks of St. Wandrille in the 13th century.
3. The Stone building next to the Aldi on the junction of The Common and Mill Lane, which was a 17th century water powered corn mill.
4. The Hydra business park, built on the site of Hall & Pickles, Hydra Steel Works.
5. The Smithy Wood Office and Business Park, between Ecclesfield and Chapeltown, which used to be part of the Newton Chambers enterprise, and which burnt coal in 59 coke ovens.
Finally (at 16:00), the video shows us retire to St. Mary's Church to see the information stands (at 18:00), and to hear John Ellis's concluding remarks (at 19:00).
