Fort Nelson & Dawson Creek, BC, Canada - Alaska Highway
Today we continued our mini-caravan south thru Fort Nelson, BC, Canada to Dawson Creek, BC.
In Fort Nelson we spent the night and visited the Fort Nelson Museum. This was a fantastic museum filled with everything imaginable! We were able to meet the man who had spent most of his life collecting all of the memorabilia! He had a little of everything from local artifacts to many old cars. Trisha was able to sweet talk him into giving her a ride in his Model T!
The next day we continued our journey to Dawson Creek which is ‘Mile 0’ of the Alaska Highway! There we boondocked in at a Walmart for 2 nights and had a Pot Luck dinner right in the parking lot where I attached the ‘Alaska’ sticker to the map on the back of my camper! We also visited their ongoing ‘Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Stampede’. At the Stampede (Rodeo) we saw lots of rides and a great Rodeo including Cattle Roping and Bull Riding! We also watched a band that featured the lead singer playing a Base guitar hand made out of a Chevy gas tank – which sounded great!!
After the rodeo, we re-connected with some of our other Alaska Tour friends at a local campground and had a great Pot Luck dinner including Elk Burgers!

Backcountry Canoe Trip - Killarney Provincial Park
Watch the Trustin Timber edit at
Caitlin compiled all the extra footage and behind the scenes to make her own little masterpiece of a film for those of you that want just a little more of The TImber Life.
Our first stop was Killarney Outfitters. We’ve been renting canoes and picking up last minute gear from them for many years so it was a real pleasure to get to meet the owner Ted who helps us pick a new camp stove.
We got an MSR Dragonfly stove and it's awesome. Making coffee and cooking is so much quicker than starting a fire and since the fire ban had just lifted we wanted to be careful with having open fires
Our Favorite Stove:
Ted also gave us a Firefly water bottle/flashlight to test and we really liked it as well. It’s a local company and a very clever idea so we hope they do well. fireflyoutdoors.ca
With a few more items in our cart and the canoe rental sorted, we were ready for adventure.

Into the Great Solitude | PBS Special Documentaries - Solo Canoe Journeys with Robert Perkins
This now classic outdoor adventure film tells the story of Robert Perkins’ seventy-two day solo canoe journey in the Canadian Arctic. Perkins not only takes on arduous physical challenges, but he lyrically describes in film and language how the journey helps him make peace with a difficult father.
Winner of many major awards, his best-known work provides a captivating look at Perkins as a young man willing to take on the challenges of the Canadian Arctic on a long solo canoe trip. Battling rapids and black flies, while dancing with his own demons and his shadow, Perkins explores what it means to survive in the stark beauty of the Canadian tundra. Perkins not only takes on arduous physical challenges, but he lyrically describes in film and language how the journey helps him find peace with his father.

Details on My Plan to Solo Canoe 1,000 Miles Through the Arctic Alone
In the summer of 2019 I plan to paddle my solo canoe 1000 miles solo (trip report here: from Missinipe Saskatchewan to Arviat Nunavut (downstream on the Churchill River, upstream on the Reindeer and Cochrane Rivers, and then downstream to Hudson Bay on the Thlewiaza River). I expect this trip to take about 50 days - that's how much food I'm bringing anyhow!
In this video I go into details about how I'm going to do it and why I would ever want to do something that crazy.
Right now the plan is to post updates on my Instagram @stephan_kesting ( and on The Strenuous Life Podcast (available on iTunes, Stitcher, etc) from the field using satellite technology if I can get all the communication equipment to fit into my 17 foot long canoe-kayak hybrid along with all the food and camping gear!
So please follow me on those platforms!
Backcountry 2011 - Island Lake Canoe Route
720P Is best quality. 1080P has blur to it. Completed a trip into Island Lake Forest and Barrens Provincial Conservation Reserve on the Canada day long weekend. This Conservation Reserve is 45 minutes north of Parry Sound and access is via Wahwashkesh Lake. Ontario Headed up farm creek and camped on Wolf Lake for the first night, then continued into Dutton Lake and back to Island Lake for our final night. the route to Island Lake is fairly straight forward with easy portages, however when exploring the other lakes, portages can be rough to non-existent. Take caution when locating the portages between the small lake north of Wolf towards Dutton and the longer portage from the small lake East of Dutton into Island Lake. (the latter is riddled with multiple blazed snowmobile and ATV trails, and there are about 5 portages blazed through here. The most straight forward is flagged and spray-painted orange. NOTE: Take the landing on the South-East side of the small lake and NOT the snowmobile opening as it is longer and easier to get lost. (Found out the hard way).
Novice-Intermediate to Island Lake
Intermediate-Advanced for access to the other lakes
Makes a great 2-3 day trip or a relaxing week exploring all the islands and surrounding lakes.

Aboard the Island Odyssey, see Orcas, Totems and Grizzly bears! These 5-7 day adventures are full of wildlife, rich waters and native culture along the British Columbia Coastline. Explore Johnstone Strait by small ship and see how diverse the wildlife of Northern Vancouver Island can be.
Gataga - Kechika River WILDERNESS Canoe Trip
Drove 1000km into Northern British Columbia, flew into the Mayfield Lakes, rode across the Gataga River and up the mountain, caught some fish, rode back down, and canoed 335 km down the Gataga and Kechika Rivers to the Alaska highway. Saw Stone Sheep, Moose, Wolves, Elk, and more.
Canoe Trips in Canada Whitewater and Fishing
Some of the finest whitewater canoeing in North America. Wilderness canoe trips in Quebec offer remote wilderness whitewater & fishing. The NE Mistassibi River is one of Eastern Canada's best whitewater canoe trips with over 80 sets of rapids in 80 miles, many over 1 kilometer in length. There is only one short portage and several linings making this an excellent river to paddle that is not too physically demanding. Scouting tougher rapids before running provides helpful instruction on how & where to run. There will be time to fish for Brook Trout and Northern Pike and for relaxing on the shores of this magnificent river in this remote wilderness region. Duration with travel, 8-12 days.
A tributary to the George River, the de Pas begins with numerous headwater lakes and flows northeast to the George River. The landscape is rolling hills scattered with Black Spruce, brush and the ground is mostly moss covered. This is an excellent back country canoeing and camping adventure offering fabulous fishing for Brook Trout & Northern Pike with the possibility of spotting wolves and caribou. The lower river offers exciting rapids. There are several options for your trip. We can start by crossing Attikamagen Lake (near Schefferville) and paddle just the headwater lakes ending on a tributary (approx. 55 miles by canoe and 9 days later) or paddle to where the de Pas enters the George River (136 miles and 12 days). Another option is skipping the headwater lakes by flying into a tributary to the de Pas, spending a few days exploring and fishing, then paddling to the George (approx. 100 miles and 9 days) which has numerous class III rapids that can lined or portaged. All options involve flying back to Schefferville by bush plane. We will utilize the services of a local outfitter for our trip.
Contact Dave to discuss joining up on or putting a trip together on one of these amazing rivers available during July and August.
4-Day Desolation Sound BC Ocean Canoe Paddling Trip
KJ and I spent a delightful and calm four days paddling (about 80 km) in Desolation Sound in May, 2019. We launched from Okeover. Because we had a late start (6 p.m.), we just paddled up to Hare Point for dinner and the first night. The second day, we paddled to the Curmes, where we swam, and then when the winds died down at 5 p.m., we paddled over to Prideaux Haven for a looksee. On the third sunny day, we crossed the sound and headed down Malaspina Straight and found a beach-front spot in the Copeland Islands. Up early the next morning, we sped around the point and back down Okeover Inlet, fighting an exiting tide, and stopped at Grace Harbour for a swim in Black Lake. Gotta love lake water! To end the trip, we paddled back to Okeover and our take out.
This is a great trip for those who are just learning about tides and currents because it's very sheltered. Winds do come up in the afternoons, but not like elsewhere.
Our canoe is a 17.5 ft Kevlar Clipper Tripper. Though we have a Northwater skirt, we did not use it on this trip.
We paddle with ottertail paddles because they are a little easier on the body as they do not pull as much water. That way, we can keep a higher cadence.
Our average moving speed on flat water is over 5 km/h. Typically, we paddle 20 km + per day.
Desolation Sound hints:
-When you fill in your car etc info on the parking slip and put your money on the envelope ($5/day) don't forget to take out the slip of paper already in the envelope to put on your dash.
-Camping fees are $5 per night per person in summer.
-July and August are busy with paddlers and big boats.
-Carry water or filter water from the many lakes (Unwin, Cassel, Black and the one in Roscoe Bay)--though it's a long carry from the lake to the ocean.
-All camping in the park is on tent pads. There are hooks to attach the tent, so bring cord.
