is a 1997 Iranian television series
directed by Farajollah Salahshoor. It depicts the story of the Seven Sleepers, according to the Islamic and chrestian views.
The story appears in the Qur'an (Surah Al-Kahf9–26) and thus is important to Islam. The Quranic story doesn't state the exact number of sleepers, also gives the number of years that they slept as 300 solar years (equivalent to 309 lunar years). The Islamic version includes mention of a dog, al Rakim, who accompanied the youths into the cave and appears to keep watch. In Islam, these youths are referred to as the People of the Cave.
#Christian_interpretation
The story says that during the persecutions by the Roman emperor Decius, around 250 AD, seven young men were accused of following Christianity. They were given some time to recant their faith, but chose instead to give their worldly goods to the poor and retire to a mountain cave to pray, where they fell asleep. The emperor, seeing that their attitude towards paganism had not improved, ordered the mouth of the cave to be sealed.[1]
Decius died in 251, and many years passed during which Christianity went from being persecuted to being the state religion of the Roman Empire. At some later time – usually given as during the reign of Theodosius II(408–450) – the landowner decided to open up the sealed mouth of the cave, thinking to use it as a cattle pen. He opened it and found the sleepers inside. They awoke, imagining that they had slept but one day, and sent one of their number to Ephesus to buy food, with instructions to be careful lest the pagans recognize and seize him.
Upon arriving in the city, this person was astounded to find buildings with crossesattached; the townspeople for their part were astounded to find a man trying to spend old coins from the reign of Decius. The bishopwas summoned to interview the sleepers; they told him their miracle story, and died praising God.[1] The various lives of the Seven Sleepers in Greek are listed at BHG 1593–1599,[6] and in other non-Latin languages at BHO 1013-1022.[7]
As the earliest versions of the legend spread from Ephesus, an early Christian catacombcame to be associated with it, attracting scores of pilgrims. On the slopes of Mount Pion (Mount Coelian) near Ephesus (near modern Selçuk in Turkey), the grotto of the Seven Sleepers with ruins of the church built over it was excavated in 1927–1928. The excavation brought to light several hundred graves dated to the 5th and 6th centuries. Inscriptions dedicated to the Seven Sleepers were found on the walls of the church and in the graves. This grotto is still shown to tourists.
#Islamic interpretation
The story of the Companions of the Cave is referred to in Surah 18 (verses 9-26).[13]According to Muslim scholars, God revealed these verses because the people of Meccachallenged Muhammad with questions that were passed on to them from the Jews of Medina in an effort to test his authenticity. They asked him about young men who disappeared in the past, about a man who travelled the earth from east to west, Zulqurnain, and about the soul. The story parallels the Christian version, recounting the story of a group of young believers who resisted the pressure to worship others beside God, and took refuge in a cave, following which they fell asleep for a long time. When they woke up they thought that they had slept for only a day or so, and they sent one of them back to the city to buy food. His use of old silver coins revealed the presence of these youths to the town. Soon after their discovery, the People of the Cave (as the Qur'an calls them) died and the people of their town buried them in the cave and built a place of worship there. The Qur'an does not give their exact number. It mentions that some people would say that they were three, others would say five and some would say seven, in addition to one dog, and that they slept for 300 years, plus 9, which could mean 300 solar years or 309 lunar years (300 solar years are equal to 309 lunar years).

the Ancient city of Ephesus Turkey and an Ancient Wonder
For more great destinations and hotel tours like me at
When in Turkey you must definitely make a stop in Ephesus, one of the most amazing ancient cities of the world. You can get non stop flights from Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt as well as Istanbul. I flew from Istanbul with Turkish Airlines into Izmir, only an hour flight and if you purchase far enough in advance can get some great rates. I only paid around 48usd. I rented a car from Hertz with GPS, which is a must. We had a tight schedule and I didn't want to worry about getting lost. The GPS lead us right to the main entrance of Ephesus in just under an hour. Paid 10Lira for parking and 40Lira for entrance, (Aprox ttl 18USD)30 if you don't want to see the Terrace Houses, but they are worth seeing.
Their will be someone there with small horses and carts that will take you to the opposite entrance, then you would just walk one way, which would have been more convenient due to our time constraint, but I couldn't do that to the poor horses, so we passed.
Walk down Harbor street thru the necropolis, city of the dead, towards the ancient city.
Walk along marble street and view the amazing ancient theater, the Agora and then on to Ephesus' most beautiful structure, The Library of Celsus. This is the most photographed building in Ephesus. Then we will turn on Curetes street and you will see the latrines, Hadrian's temple, the Terrace Houses, Odeon and much much more.
After Ephesus, we drive a little further, to the Grotto of the 7 sleepers and then on to the House of Mary. When Jesus died he asked John to watch over Mary and it is believed that this is where the apostle John brought Mary to live out her last days.
On the way back down the mountain you will get an amazing view of the city of Selcuk, Selcuk Castle and St John's Bastilica, which is our next destination.
A charge of 10 Turkish Lira to enter the bastilica, which also gets you to the castle. It is believed that St John, one of Jesus' apostles, came here during his last years and this is where he was buried. A small chapel was built over his grave, which later was expanded into the beautiful bastilica.
a few minutes drive away, you will come to one of the Ancient 7 wonders of the world, The Temple of Artemis. It is only a pile of rubble now, but from what historians say was once a sight to behold.
first destroyed by a flood, then rebuilt into the one that became the ancient wonder, it was destroyed Herostatus set it on fire, hoping to become famous at any cost. this happened to occur on the date of Alexander the Greats birth. It was believed that Artemis was preoccupied with his birthing to save her temple. Later, Alexander came to Ephesus and offered to rebuild as long as they attached his name to it, but the city refused. It was finally rebuilt after Alexanders death and this temple lasted for 600 years before being destroyed by the Goths.

In Christian and Islamic tradition, the Seven Sleepers (Arabic: اصحاب الکهف, romanized: aṣḥāb al kahf, lit. 'People of the Cave') is the story of a group of youths who hid inside a cave outside the city of Ephesus around 250 AD to escape a religious persecution and emerged some 300 years later.
The earliest version of this story comes from the Syrian bishop Jacob of Serugh (c. 450 – 521), which is itself derived from an earlier Greek source, now lost.[2] An outline of this tale appears in Gregory of Tours (538–594), and in Paul the Deacon's (720–799) History of the Lombards.[3] The best-known Western version of the story appears in Jacobus da Varagine's Golden Legend.
The Roman Martyrology mentions the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus under the date of 27 July (June according to Vatican II calendar).[4] The Byzantine calendar commemorates them with feasts on 4 August and 22 October. The ninth-century Irish calendar Félire Óengusso commemorates the Seven Sleepers on 7 August.[5]
The story appears in the Qur'an (Surah Al-Kahf 18:26) and thus is important to Islam. The Islamic version includes mention of a dog, who accompanied the youths into the cave and appears to keep watch. In Islam, these youths are referred to as the People of the Cave.

They were given some time to recant their faith, but they refused to bow to Roman idols. Instead they chose to give their worldly goods to the poor and retire to a mountain cave to pray, where they fell asleep. The Emperor, seeing that their attitude towards paganism had not improved, ordered the mouth of the cave to be sealed.[1]

Decius died in 251, and many years passed during which Christianity went from being persecuted to being the state religion of the Roman Empire. At some later time – usually given as during the reign of Theodosius II (408–450) – in 447 A.D. when heated discussions were taking place between various schools of Christianity about the resurrection of body in the day of judgement and life after death, a landowner decided to open up the sealed mouth of the cave, thinking to use it as a cattle pen. He opened it and found the sleepers inside. They awoke, imagining that they had slept but one day, and sent one of their number to Ephesus to buy food, with instructions to be careful lest the pagans recognize and seize him.

House of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus-Turkey
The House of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic and Muslim shrine located on Mt. Koressos in the vicinity of Ephesus, Turkey. The house was discovered in the 19th century by following the descriptions in the reported visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774–1824), a paralyzed German Roman Catholic nun and visionary, which were published as a book by Clemens Brentano after her death. One of Emmerich's accounts was a description of the house the Apostle John had built in Ephesus for Mary, the mother of Jesus, where she had lived to the end of her life.
Archaeologists who have examined the building believe most of the building dates from the 6th or 7th century but its foundations are much older and may well date from the 1st century AD, the time of Mary. The Catholic Church has never come out in favor or against the authenticity of the house, but nevertheless maintains a steady flow of pilgrims since its discovery.
