Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center
No Place Like Home Guadalupe Dunes
The Central Coast is full of treasures, and most aren't too hard to find. It would be downright difficult to miss the one that stretches along 18 miles of California Coastline right in our own backyard. Yet, too many of us haven't made the effort to discover all that's there. We should. The Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes offer all kinds of outdoor adventures.
Most of us are familiar with the ATV adventures that are available at the dunes in Grover Beach and Pismo Beach. But there's a whole other playground just down the arod that offers adventure of another sort. We're a hidden gem here in Guadalupe. says Mario Castellanos, Executive Director of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center. One of the things we do is get a lot of visitors from outside the area, but we get less visitors from Santa Maria and the local area.
The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes encompass one of the largest intact coastal dune eco-systemsin the United States. People come to fish, to enjoy the ocean, to bird watch. says Dena Bellman, Park and Recreation Specialist for the Oceano Dunes District. You can kayak, there's lots of animal watching. and to know you are visiting a place that has such historical significance in California.
If you don't know where to start your exploration, the Dunes Center in Guadalupe is a good option. You can map out your trek ahead of time there, or sign up for a guided tour that offers more than directions. We guide them into the dunes and teach them about flowers and plants of course, and insects says Castellanos.
You also get a sampling of the treasures that lie below the Dunes and draw film buffs worldwide. Cecil B. Demille's original ten commandments movie was shot there back in 1923 and below the windblown hills of sand, there is an entire movie set, referred to by locals as The Lost CIty of Demille. It's a part of the dunes not open to the public. And even if you were to visit the site, the reason we call it the lost city, is that it's lost. It's buried under sand, and there's obviously debris for most part. says Castellanos. But we have some of the premier artifacts here at the Dunes Center, and you can come here to see some of the incredible icons from that time.
The dunes have also hosted other Hollywood film crews for movies like Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, Hidalgo, G.I. Jane, Odd Couple, and others.
And while there's controversy surrounding the way a portion of the dunes is being used for off-roading, State Parks officials say a big chunk of change from the off-road fund money goes to resource management of the dunes. It's because of that that we're able to have what we have here and keep the balance that we do. says Bellman.
The Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes are an oasis of outdoor serenity right in our own backyard, proving once again, there's no place like home.

THE GUADALUPE OIL FIELD RESPONSE
Legendary filmmaker Cecil B. Demille constructed the largest movie set in history at the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes just south of Pismo Beach in the 1920’s. The structure has been buried for decades, but after a recent excavation and funding, The “Dunes Center” is attracting a worldwide audience. The new center is expected to host hundreds of children annually, with hands-on environmental science displays that include a virtual topographical map of the dunes. Part of the center’s funding comes from oil spill penalties collected and awarded by the Office of Spill Prevention and Response.
Bella and Lola Visit Oceano Dunes
Aluminum-clad and gleaming, Airstream trailers are a throwback to a Golden Age of road-tripping that has inspired roadside envy ever since. You could splurge on one of your own, or you can rent one to meander your way along the coast. Lola and I did just that for a trip we took up to California wine country and decided to spend a day exploring the dunes in Oceano, California on the way back.
Oceana is just a few hours north of Los Angeles and for quite some time we’d been hearing about sand dunes that we could run around in and boy, was it super fun once we got there. We met a cute boy dog named Oscar, who was taking his Mom for a walk. Then Lola and I met a couple of kids we couldn't understand because they only spoke German, so we pretended they were Hansel and Gretel and made up a a whole story about them. Mostly, we ran around in the dunes like we characters from the movie Assassin’s Creed or The Mummy.
Little did we know that in 1923, Cecil. B. DeMille built the largest movie set in history for his epic film, The Ten Commandments, in the dunes near here. There’s a pretty fascinating exhibit featuring artifacts left over from the movie at The Dunes Center ( in Guadalupe, CA. It's worth a visit if you're interested in traveling around California's Central Coast and exploring the dunes.
The Oceano dunes are actually only a small part of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dune System which is recognized by scientists and conservationists as the finest, most extensive coastal dunes remaining in California. The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes area is home to a surprisingly wide range of plant and animal life. Those who take the time to explore will see wildflowers, countless small mammals and insects, a variety of small birds at the water's edge and hawks, owls, pelicans, or gulls flying overhead.
American Indians were the original inhabitants of the area, but during the 1930's and 40's, the dunes were home to a group of free thinking people that included mystics, nudists, artists, writers, and hermits. They called themselves Dunites and they believed that Oceano Dunes were one of the centers of creative energy in California. Seek out the solitude of the dunes and perhaps you too, will feel the creative forces that the Dunites spoke about.
The prevailing winds blow in from the ocean, pushing sand particles up into wave-like crests. The dunes undulate for 18 miles along the central coasts shoreline, stretching from Pismo State Beach to Point Sal. A steady wind sweeps over them, sculpting sand into towering peaks that stretch 500 feet into the sky. Tall grasses and shrubs with bright yellow flowers that look like daisies, are scattered across the dunes. As the sun sets, sapphire blue waves crash on white sand beaches, under skies splashed with pink, orange and purple.
It's easy to see why Cecil B. DeMille chose this dramatic windswept setting for his film. Hope you enjoy the one we made, too.
Love,
Lil’ Bella and Lola
