Visiting the Parque Histórico Guayaquil in Guayas, Ecuador
Take a stroll through the flora, fauna, culture and history of the province of Guayas at the Parque Histórico Guayaquil.
The park features three distinct sections:
1. Wildlife area: Witness over 50 local animals who call the native mangrove forests of the Ecuadorian coast home, including parrots, tulcan, deer, crocodiles and Tapirs.
2. Historical Architecture: Take a step back in time to the start of the 20th century to the beautiful wooden architecture that Guayaquil once had to offer.
3. Countryside Culture: Walk through the native plants and farms that fill the countryside outside of Guayaquil. This production built the shipping port and the city of Guayaquil to what it is today, especially the production of cacao.

Parque Historico Guayaquil in Guayaquil, Ecuador
The Historical Park of Guayaquil is a recreational park with a wildlife and cultural space that exhibits species of flora and fauna of Guayaquil , in addition to old houses in the urban area that were dismantled from their original location and rebuilt in this place. It was inaugurated on October 21, 1999, and has 8 hectares of land in which these spaces are divided into three zones: The Wildlife Zone, the Traditions Zone and the Urban-Architectural Zone.
The park is located in the Samborondón canton , and is managed by the Public Company of Urban Parks and Public Spaces and the Ministry of Tourism, after its change of administration, being its former regentor the Central Bank of Ecuador in 2010.
History: the Central Bank of Ecuador built it in 1997 on the banks of the Guayas River as a theme park of 8 hectares with educational, cultural, environmental, recreational and tourist purposes. It is aimed to exhibit the history and culture of the old province of Guayaquil that emerged at the end of the colonial times and the beginning of the republican life of the country between the XIX and XX centuries, which occupied almost all of the Ecuadorian coast including the existing provinces of Los Rios, El Oro and part of Manabi.
The site also recreates the architecture, traditions and the urban and rural life of the Guayaquil of those times, mixed with a beautiful natural park full of a diverse vegetation that form different natural and wildlife areas with their respective flora and fauna.
Its history dates back to the beginnings of 1980 when the director of the Anthropologic Museum of the Central Bank of Ecuador, Olaf Holm, was notified of the demolition of four buildings of great historic value, so he suggested that instead of demolishing them, a tourist-cultural project be developed to reflect the architecture of the city. Therefore, the buildings were dismantled and storage in the bank until the construction of the project.
The Special Projects Unit of the Central Bank that inaugurated the work on June 15, 1997 carried out the project. It was developed by stages, including the different areas of the park. On October of 1999, the Wildlife area was opened; on November 2000, the Traditions area; on November 2002, the Urban Architectonic area and the Pier 1900; on July 2005, the Julian Coronel House; on June 2006, the chapel of the Corazon de Jesus Hospice; on October 2000, the Territorial Bank and the Lavayen Paredes House.
The Public Company of Natural Parks and Public Spaces took over the administration on June 14, 2012, maintaining the same initial purposes.
Attractions: the visitors can get a taste of the geopolitical context of the old days; since the park recreates different habitats in which the people of the old province of Guayaquil used to develop their activities, such as the woods, the countryside and the city, which is closely related to the so called “Golden Age” of the main port of Ecuador, whose principal activity was the commercialization of cocoa.
The visitor can appreciate the history of Guayaquil in three defined areas:
1) Wildlife Area: it comprises approximately four hectares and recreates the natural habitat of more than 50 species between birds, mammals and other animals that turned the woods into their natural habitat, some of which are in danger of extinction.
Among the animals there are: birds such as parrots, a harpy eagle (endangered specie), Toucan of the coast, and the Maria and Masked ducks; mammals like sloths, ocelots, deer, spider monkeys, tapirs and collared sainos; reptiles such as the crocodile from the coast and spectacled caimans.
The wildlife area is toured through an elevated trail that allows real contact with the ecosystem, without causing discomfort to the visitors or the animals. During the walk, 23 themed stops are made, in order to admire each species individually.
Regarding the flora, the mangrove can be appreciated in all its varieties, which constitutes the predominant plant specie of the Ecuadorian coast that is characterized for being a region of great ecological wealth.
The area has a viewpoint of 11 meters in height where the visitor can enjoy a formidable view of the woods and the sounds of this paradise of life.
2) Urban Architectonic Area: the space recreates the wealthy times of Guayaquil of the first decades of the XX century, when the city enjoyed an economic boom thanks to the growth and exportation of cocoa, which brought prosperity to the city and the surrounding farms.

Guayaquil, a Destination marked by Progress and Freedom (Documentary)
Known as the Pearl of the Pacific, Guayaquil is the development engine of the country. The maritime port of Guayaquil is considered as one of the most efficient of the Pacific Coast; 80% of the country’s cargo passes through the port of Guayaquil. It is the point of entry into Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and the world. It is the most visited city of the country if we add up the national and international visitors. The Jose Joaquin de Olmedo airport, the largest in the country, has been recognized by the users, internationally in its category, as the best airport, for its facilities and the services that are provided in an agile and efficient way; it also has one of the best land terminals of South America.
Guayaquil is considered the city with the most progress in the last 20 years. Mayor Jaime Nebot, with a visionary spirit and the creative work of the people of his administration, has taken the city to the highest levels of development and welfare. It is a beautiful city to visit and discover; it has all the tourist attractions that makes it a national and international destination, where the tourists are welcome with affection by its joyful, kind and tropical people.

Guayaquil is one of the fewest cities in the world that hosts diverse ecosystems like tropical forests, both humid and dry; mangroves, which alongside estuaries and the majestic Guayas River, have and an incomparable fauna and flora. The beauty of its landscapes makes the city a place to dream. The birds can be observed in the city thanks to the urban regeneration that has created scenarios within the parks, piers, and flowerbeds, which have become a habitat for different endemic species. The dolphins of El Morro represent a great attraction and also the iguanas that can be observed in the Seminario Park.

Guayaquil has diverse orchids that distinguished the city, reason why, the City’s Council picked an orchid to be the emblematic flower of Guayaquil: the “ Encyclia Angustiloba Schltr” that was discovered 200 years ago an that can be appreciated at the botanical garden, hills and different settings where it flowers with its enigmatic beauty. An enormous sculpture will be crafted to represent the orchid in the north area of the city.

We've been going to Namaste since our first week in Cuenca, and we forged a friendship with Chinnu and now Abin, too. We're VERY honored to be invited and excited to attend their wedding in southern India!
We will also be staying in Amsterdam for a week on the way to India, Amelia's first time to Europe and my first time to mainland Europe. But before we can go, we have some obstacles to overcome...

With more than 400 years old, Las Peñas was the first neighborhood of Guayaquil, which took its name from the cliffs and limestone rocks that formed the Hill back then when the Spanish settled in the XV century. In 1982 the neighborhood was declared Cultural Heritage of Ecuador and between 2002 and 2008, the place was restored and regenerated by the Municipality of Guayaquil.
