Worldschool Tour: Valley Forge National Historic Park
While Melynda was off on a post TBEX press trip, the boys and I took a little worldschooling / homeschool history road trip down the east coast. Our first stop was at Valley Forge National Historic Park in King of Prussia, PA. As you may know, this was the winter quarters of Washington's continental army outside of Philadelphia. It's a relatively small site but definitely worth a visit and FREE. On this trip, I tried not to force the education aspect too much and just let the kids explore the history and get as much out of the experiences as they wanted. I want to make sure they maintain their curiosity of the world and see learning as fun rather than work.
---
The park is located not far outside of Philadelphia and would make a great day trip from that historic city, which is exactly why it is where it is. Hope you enjoy our little journey and stay tuned for the next video where we visit Gettysburg National Battlefield.

Hidden Pennsylvania History - York Colonial Courthouse
The city of York is often overlooked when people plan out their historical tours within the state of Pennsylvania -- mostly, because it is overshadowed by Independence Hall in Philadelphia which was the first Capitol of the United States -- but when the young Capitol was occupied by the British, the revolutionaries need to find a new location.
After going to Lancaster, they quickly realized they needed a pre-existing structure and a more secure location (over the Susquahenna River) -- this is where York came into play.
We owe a lot to this city, as the Articles of Confederation were drawn up here, stating, for the first time, The United States of America. Be sure to stop by and tour the Colonial Court House along with all the attractions of the York County Heritage Trust.
A big thanks to Elizabeth Stein for the tour and the info.

The Congressional Hearings on Meade at Gettysburg in 1864 (Lecture)
General George Meade had to appear before a congressional subcommittee in Washington in the Spring of 1864 to answer several questions seemingly aimed at diminishing his performance at Gettysburg. The several loaded questions leveled at him, and his corps' commanders, who also testified, appear in retrospect to be unfair at best, and a witch hunt at worst. What were the intentions of the Committee on the Conduct of War? Did they simply ask questions that needed to be asked, or did they hope to raise doubts about the administration's ability to prosecute the war? Why burden the memory of a great Union victory with innuendo's that Meade could have done more? Ranger Troy Harman tackles these questions and more in this lecture, featured as a part of Gettysburg National Military Park's 2014 Winter Lecture Series.
