Hachinohe Sansha Taisai
Gorgeous Pageantry - Japan's best float parade
The Hachinohe Sansha Taisai helps decorate Hachinohe's short summer season.
Accompanied by traditional shrine processions and lively Japanese folk music, the gorgeous floats evoke images of Japan's feudal era.
Boasting a history of over 300 years, the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai has been designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
The Hachinohe Sansha Taisai has been registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list under the section of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan.”
The most notable highlight is the procession of mikoshi (portable shrines) from Ogami Shrine, Chojasan Shinra Shrine and Shinmei-gu Shrine,as well as the parade of floats (sansha) featuring subjects such as mythological
figures and kabuki characters.
As the floats which can reach heights of 10m and widths of 8m pass by, spectators often shout with joy.
The night time parade of illuminated floats seems to hover in the night air and creates a fantastical atmosphere that provides a completely different way to enjoy the festivities.
Every year for the 5 days from July 31 to August 5, Hachinohe is enveloped in a unique excitement.
The Making of the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Dashi (Parade Floats)
The construction of the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai festival floats, called dashi, begins around the Japanese holiday period commonly known as Golden Week, which usually takes place during the beginning of May.
A month before the actual festival begin, lights peeping out from the sheds, storerooms, and garages that store the dashi can be seen in every neighborhood as the dashi making work continues deep into the night.
No one is usually referred to as a professional dashi maker in the strictest sense amongst those who help construct the floats for the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai, because almost all the people helping with the construction of their neighborhood float usually have full time jobs and careers.
Thus it is after the people of the neighborhood have returned from a full day’s work and it is already late at night that the construction starts. But it is this effort and dedication of the people who work together to build the
floats that help to support the entire festival.
After the festival is over, the dashi that were so painstakingly and intricately made are sometimes used in different neighborhood festivals or other celebrations, but in the end all of them are eventually disassembled.
When May of the next year comes round again, it will be time to find new materials to build a whole different dashi. With no two dashi ever being exactly alike, the 27 floats of the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai add a particular extravagance and impressive beauty to the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai festival.

Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Daytime
Hachinohe's Sansha Taisai is one of the largest festivals in Aomori. It was originally a ceramonial procesion of a mokishi (portable shrine). Throughout the years the 3 shrines and the townspeople joined in and added their own floats. Now, it is nicknamed the storybook festival because of the unique way the floats expand.

Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival
DYA717 Japan 2015 08 03 Hachinohe Sansha Taisai festival
Wow, da festival gods are taking care of me –NATTO for breakfast 2 days in a row! So what to do after that wonderful feast? Today is Monday so I didn’t want to occupy da same train space of those office jocks so I decided to go BURA-BURA/exploring to kill some time. After an hour of walking, the Nakasan department store opened and I happened to be there. So I asked them do you have those things that go ‘CHING-CHING-CHING? You know da kind stuff they use in the festival?’ Well, after plenty hand motions, da young wahine finally caught on and said what size I wanted? Well da same size as da young maidens were going ‘CHING-CHING-CHING’ last night! The small size is good for women and children and the larger size is mostly for men and plus sized ladies! Kekekeke Then she threw me another curve and said what color do you want da tassels? ‘ummmmmmmmmmmmm’, they only have red and orange today. Whew, flip da coin! Glad never had chartruese, margenta, teal, burgandy etc. So I think I just took red. There is a cloth covering, cost extra, and it comes in red or black? “ummmmmmmmmmmmmm – hey lady, give me one break!’. So I chose one red one. OK, so now I have this problem. I went spend U-KU bucks (cash) and gotta lug dis junk home and I know it is going to break my back. Just to ease my mind, when I bring it back, does anyone want it? How about we start one auction, starting at 10,000-yen, increments of 2,000-yen. OK, what bid am I hearing?
Oh wait, I forgot. I think one senior lady wanted one. OK, OK, forget da bid! Da 2 clerks at that yatai went pose with the new TE-BU-RI-GA-NE which I gotta lug back all da way back to Hawaii!
Today is moving day – start my way going south. So I went down to da train station and told da agent, hey mano, I like go Hachinohe for today. Hey, again da festival Gods must have been looking out fo’ me. I finally got on one direct express from Hirosaki to Shin-Aomori (no stop) and transferred to on shinkansen on to Hachinohe in 25 minutes or so, all in green cars. So I dropped off my bags at the Hachinohe Toyoko Inn and caught the train 2 stations locally to da left and got off at Hon-Hachinohe station. I followed da crowd and ended up at the municipal government area. The civil servants were working but they had yatais set up all over the grounds with drinks, food, live entertainment galore! So I bought rice and something I didn’t know what it was but pointed at it. Turned out to be yakisoba in a wrap! So I had that with rice and beer. They had a table and some seats so I went ask da wahine can I have my snacks there? She said, gomen-nasai but those seats are part of the medical tent for emergencies! OOOOOOOOH, so I can’t read Japanese so what is new? So I sat under one tree and ate it -- what can I say. I bought it so I gotta say ONO! Followed da crowd again and at 3:15 (late) the parade for the Hachinohe started.
The Hachinohe Sansha Taisai festival parade started at around 3 p.m. – you could hear fireworks popping at the start. Where I was standing, it took about 30 ninutes before the front of the parade appeared. This is a totally different kind of parade from the last 2 I just saw. These guys are serious, like religiously serious. Those in the parade were wearing the customs of Shinto worshipers or samurai. They walk sloooooowly, make frequent 3-4 minute stops. Not as jumpy and lively as the other 2 parades. The main floats came last. The floats, trully works of art, actually opens up but the parade route was narrow and had too many low hanging wires overhead so couldn’t reveal the true splendor of them. Check out da video. Got bored so I caught the train back to the hotel and got my room assigned. A quick shower and it is time for dinner. Nothing special – actually I don’t know what I ordered – I just pointed to a picture in the menu. Turned out to be a fish and squid dish – no rice so I think I ordered a pupu set because one mug of beer was included. No complaints from me.

Japan, Part Three — Hachinohe City
Japan is my favorite place on the planet and I recently got to spend a week there as a guest of the Japan National Tourism Organization, and here's what happened. This is our third leg, a visit to the city of Hachinohe. It was a quick visit, but we managed to visit a 242-year old sake brewery, an island where 40,000 black-tailed seagulls breed, and a restaurant to learn about the city's annual Bouillabaisse Festa. I posted some photos and my story over at check it out to learn more!

The floats were brilliant in color, creative in design and magnificent in size.
