Backpacking Hanoi, Vietnam - Indochina (Sleeper Bus, The Old Quarter) - Vlog 11
Ciao Beatiful people!
My brother and I went backpacking in Indochina. Y'all curious how we did it for the first time? ;)
It ain't easy planning our trip as we got zero clue about their land transport system and language... they dont even speak english. But with a very keen research, it's all possible!
This is part one:
Video Index:
01:40 - Old Quarter House (Hanoi Accommodation)
02:40 - Pho Bo 69 (Really good Pho/Vietnamese Noodles)
04:29 - Pho Gia Truyen (Popular Pho in Old Quarters)
05:04 - Manh Coffee (Coconut Coffee / Ca Phe Cot Dua)
05:15 - Banh Mi A (Banh Mi Ga Quay, Ca Phe Trung)
05:50 - Old Quarter
06:05 - Hoan Kiem Lake
07:05 - Nuoc Ngam Bus Station (Sleeper Bus from Hanoi to Vientiane)
08:30 - Sleeper Bus Overview
10:00 - Vietnam-Laos Border / Immigration
Here are some tips before you go Backpacking Indochina/Hanoi:
- Book your bus through Baolau or Bookmebus (they're the best choice out there). Remember to book at least 1 week ahead.
- Book your activities and tours through Klook. reliable, affordable, and better services.
- Book your other activities and tours through airbnb too.
- Book your accommodation through Booking.com, the hotels/motels are so cheap but the quality is good! No need for homestays or airbnb if u aint needing kitchen etc.
- Bring US dollars. Easier to exchange. Most shops especially in Cambodia accepts USD as payment.
- Download offline maps of each country/city in google. Trust me, it's a life saver.
- You can wear tank tops, shirts, shorts in each country. But if you're going to sacred places like temples, you've got to wear shirts and pants.
- Use Taxi/Grab in Vietnam / Laos / Cambodia, it's fairly cheaper than Philippines. Thailand has the same rate. If you dont wanna haggle the rate of the taxi, better book through Grab. Safer and reliable. Try tuktuk, these are like pedicabs / tricycles, cheaper but it'll take longer.
- Bring Off Lotion (Insect repellant), small towel, toiletries, tissues, emergency meds/pills when Backpacking. Anything that you could think off but mind the weight especially when you're going home through plane.
- Eat as much street food and drinks as you can, it's cheap and a once-in-a-lifetime moment... yah including the exotic ones. ;)
- If you're part of ASEAN, you don't need visa. However, if you're from other non participating countries, you can apply beforehand or have visa on arrival. Check your passports entry power. It's fairly easy to go to each countries immigration, it's different from the ones on the airport but pretty much the same process.
- Take lots of videos not only pictures! The views are really magnificent.

Hanoi, Vietnam: Travel Vlog
Moments after arriving to Hanoi, my brother called and said he had an extra week of leave. Of course, what other way to spend it than to fly out and see us?! (I hadn’t seen him for months as he was on deployment.) The next few days were great, buying bikes, painting them, heading to the Perfume Pagoda for a day trip, going out, all the good stuff. We left Hanoi on the same day, Matt homeward bound, us on to the next adventure. Until next time, bro!
VietCamLao Chapter 1 - Vietnam: First impressions. Hanoi
This is going to be our first backpacking exploration of Southeast Asia. After intense preparation and very limited planing we departed from our hometown in Italy. Flight to Vietnam was really smooth and relatively cheap, just one layover in Doha. Nice place to spend few hours wondering around.
Hanoi met us with a lot of traffic, chaotic lifestyle and some really good food. We decided to go local and took a bus to the city center, after 14 hours of sitting it was nice to stand a bit. The ride was relatively cheap $1,40 but it takes a bit of time thou.
We were lucky to meet some locals and explore their favorite places. Couchsurfing and tinder apps were really useful for that, going and talking directly to someone would be even easier, people are really chill and easygoing (if you find someone who speaks English of course).
We explored some of the main tourist attractions by ourselves as well: Thượng Điện, Temple of literature, Temple of the Jade Mountain just to mention few; for that we rented a motorcycle. It’s a common way of moving around for travelers and locals, we weren’t exception. Even if they have quite affordable rental prices, barging is recommended! You should expect price range from 5 to 8 $ per day (deposit can be your passport or couple hundred dollars). Be aware that you will need some time to get used to the driving conditions.
We didn’t wanna stuck for too long in the capital (it’s easy to spend a week in Hanoi without even noticing) so after three days we decided to explore rural remote areas in the far north of Vietnam. Instead of mainstream Sapa our choice felt on Ha Giang (thanks Giannina for that). It’s much less touristy and still mostly undeveloped, so it was an easy choice for us!
Bus terminal is a bit far away from the city center and will take more than half an hour to get there by taxi (You can even get an Uber scooter ride if you traveling on your own). It can be good idea to ask your hotel if they can arrange bus tickets for you, price should be around 200.000 dong.
Let’s adventure start!
