Giant Chinese paddlefish declared extinct after surviving 150 million years
Beijing — Scientists say a giant fish species that managed to survive at least 150 million years has been completely wiped out by human activity. Research published in the Science of The Total Environment report this week says the giant Chinese paddlefish, also known as the Chinese swordfish, is officially extinct. A model of a giant Chinese paddlefish is seen on display in Chongqing, China. CCTV/Reuters The monster fish, one of the largest freshwater species in the world with lengths up to 23 feet, was once common in China's Yangtze River. It's speed saw it referred to commonly in China as the water tiger. Study leader Qiwei Wei of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences called it a reprehensible and an irreparable loss. Zeb Hogan, a fish expert at the University of Nevada, Reno, told National Geographic that it was very sad to see the definitive loss of a very unique and extraordinary animal, with no hope of recovery. They estimate that the last of the fish likely died between 2005 and 2010. A graphic provided by the Science of The Total Environment report in January 2020 shows a timeline depicting the depletion of the giant Chinese paddlefish species in the Yangtze River. Science of The Total Environment The species had been deemed functionally extinct, or unable to reproduce, since 1993. The main causes of the ancient species demise have been listed as over-fishing and the construction of a major dam in 1981 that split the Yangtze, and the Chinese paddlefish population along with it, in two. The 3,900 mile Yangtze River ecosystem has seen half of the 175 species unique to its waters go extinct, according to Chinese media. Two other species native to the river have also been declared functionally extinct; the reeves shad and the Yangtze dolphin. Last week China announced a 10-year fishing ban on some areas of the Yangtze in a bid to protect its beleaguered biodiversity.
Walking Shanghai's Suzhou Creek
Suzhou Creek or Soochow Creek / 苏州河 / 蘇州河, also called Wusong River / 吴淞江 / 吳淞江, is a river that passes through the Shanghai city center. It is named after the neighbouring city of Suzhou, Jiangsu, the predominant settlement in this area prior to the rise of Shanghai as a metropolis.
One of the principal outlets of Lake Tai in Wujiang District of Suzhou, Suzhou Creek is 125 km (78 mi) long, of which 54 km are within the administrative region of Shanghai and 24 km within the city's highly urbanized parts. It flows into the Huangpu River at the northern end of the Bund in Huangpu District.
Suzhou Creek has played an important role for being the demarcation line between political spheres of influences throughout Shanghai's history. After the Treaty of Nanjing forced China to open up in 1842 and Shanghai became an international trade port, the river formed the boundary between the British concession (Southern bank) and the American settlement (Northern bank) until both concessions were merged into the International Settlement in 1863. When the Japanese invaded Shanghai in 1937, the river formed the boundary between the International Settlement (South) and the Japanese concession (North).
Due to Shanghai's role as trade port, from the 1930s Suzhou Creek was an important shipping route, facilitating the transport of goods into the interior of China. Along the river banks, a multitude of warehouses and factories were built at this time, making the region close to the river a significant industrial area.
In the course of urbanization, local industries withdrew from the city center, leaving the warehouses and factories abandoned. Up to this point, the river had been heavily polluted by industries as well as domestic waste water, making Suzhou Creek locally known as the smelly river, the most polluted river in Shanghai since the 1920s.
Since 1992, the Shanghai Municipal Government has been pursuing a redevelopment of the area. In 1998, authorities launched the Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project, a 12-year-program to improve the water quality, mitigate flood impact, introduce wastewater and water resource management and push for urban revitalization and a higher living standard in the desolated areas along Suzhou River. In the meantime, Suzhou River is considered clean enough to host annual rowing competitions.
Due to its location in the former International Settlement, a number of landmarks from that period can be found along or close to Suzhou Creek. Following the river westward from its confluence, important or famous places include:
-Huangpu Park and the northern end of the Bund
-Astor House
-Consulate-General of Russia
-Shanghai Mansions (previously Broadway Mansions)
-People's Hospital No. 1
-Shanghai General Post Office
-Suzhou Creek Art District (M50)

Ice Art 2013-2014, Singapore 18 Nov 2013
I was invited to the launch of the Ice Art 2013-2014 exhibit (next to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore). Exhibit opens from 20 Nov 2013 to 15 May 2014.
The top 25 ice carving masters from Harbin China used 450 tons of crystal-clear & coloured ice blocks to create these wonderful sculptures embedded with colourful LED lighting. Indoor temperature was kept at minus 15 degrees Celsius!
*Note* : I ... uh.. mistaken the sculpture behind Raffles statue as the City Hall.... now as I go through the video, it is the Raffles Hotel! (didn't look like it!).. The extreme cold must have affected my brain!
