Hardknott Pass is a hill pass that carries a minor pathway between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England. The road, which is the most direct route from the central Lake District to West Cumbria, shares the title of steepest road in England (the other is Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire). It has a maximum gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%).

Wrynose Pass is a mountain pass between the Duddon Valley and Little Langdale. There is a single-track motor road over the pass, which is one of the steepest roads in England, with gradients up to 1 in 3. The road continues over Hardknott Pass and on into Eskdale. At the top of the Wrynose Pass is the Three Shire Stone, marking the meeting point of the historic counties of Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland.

Anglotopia Drives Through the Hardknott Pass - The Steepest Road in England
I recently had the pleasure of driving through the Hardknott Pass in the Lake District, something I've always wanted to do. My journey started at the Troutbeck Inn near Penrith and my journey took me south through Grasmere and then through the Wrynose Pass and then the Hardknott Pass before finishing in Eskdale. The gradients are 30% and many signs warn you not to take this route in the bad weather. My only challenge was avoiding sheep and letting oncoming cars pass because the weather was perfect. It was the coolest and most beautiful drive that I've ever taken. This video covers the whole journey, which took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Come along for the ride. I'll write about the journey in more detail and share pictures of it in the Anglotopia Magazine. And yes, I was driving an automatic transmission, which I know is cheating. Also, I didn't do the reverse journey, I drove on through the Esk valley and came back a different way (another adventure to tell on another day).

The Wrynose Pass is a mountain pass in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England between the Duddon Valley and Little Langdale. There is a single-track motor road over the pass with gradients up to 1 in 4. The pass reaches an altitude of 393m or 1,281 feet. The road continues over Hardknott Pass, whose 1 in 3 gradient is the steepest road in England, and goes on to Eskdale. The pass separates the Furness Fells from the Bowfell-Crinkle Crags massif.

Hard Knott Fort (known to the Romans as MEDIOBOGDUM) is near the Eskdale end of Hard Knott Pass The fort, one of the loneliest outposts of the Roman Empire, built between AD120 and AD138, is on a spectacular site overlooking the pass which forms part of the Roman road from Ravenglass to Ambleside and Brougham at Penrith.

1 day ride from Leeds over Wrynose and hardknott passes and through langdale.
Pouring with rain on first pass then stopped off for a coffee(Instant) and some cake at the King George IV Inn Eskdale(would try somewhere else next time). set off south along Austhwaite Brow over Birker Fell. Then headed North east in the direction of Seathwaite, re-rode the passes in glorious sunshine.
Then up past Blea Tarn to langdale and home to leeds.
8+ hours actual riding time wearing compression socks and MotoSkiveez andventure pants for comfort. Filmed on a sony FDR x1000v action cam mounted to helmet usinf Aluminiun Flat Bar and 3m Dual Lock fixings.

Always an exciting drive, the climb up through the Hardknott, one of the steepest roads in England, much of it 1 in 3. Most of what you see is first gear apart from a couple of the gentler bits where I could use second. The car is a 12 year old Renault Megane Scenic 1.6 16v Sport.

Heading out for more adventure we decided to make the run up to The Lake District in Cumbria to see how our bikes handled the steep pass.
The sun was shining and made for excellent footage. The occasional lens flare adding emphasis on the gleaming day!
