Many events take place every year in the old town such as the Hastings Old Town Week, Jack In The Green, the Seafood and Wine Festival, and the Bonfire Procession. Many of these events are centred on Winkle Island, which is also the gathering place of the Winkle Club.

The ruins we can see today are the remains of a stone fortress (built after William of Normandy's coronation) which was practically impregnable from three sides. Less than half of the original structure remains.
During September 1066, William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey and ordered the construction of a prefabricated wooden castle. He then moved on to Hastings and erected another.
Hastings Castle was originally a wooden tower built on top of a man made mound or motte, which was surrounded by an outer courtyard or bailey. The bailey was enclosed by a wooden palisade. The Norman motte and bailey castle would become a common fixture across England following the conquest.
After the victory at the Battle of Hastings, William was crowned on Christmas Day 1066, and had issued orders that Hastings Castle was to be rebuilt in stone.

My name is Jay, I live in England, UK. On my travels I'm joined by my good lady, Bronte (most of the time), my Dad (some of the time) our wider family occassionally and my dog when not travelling overseas.
What's This Channel About: It started as a travel diary, as a way to share our experiences with our friends and family. A wider audience took an interest in my videos and things just grew from there.
Why We Love To Travel: As a young adult I was always too busy working to take vacations. My mindset was fixed on building a successful business and this was always justified by telling myself that I'd travel once I'd made my fortunes. By the time I was 30 years old I'd only been on two overseas vacations and did not think I was missing out. Roll forward to 2015, Bronte finally convinced me to book a stay at an all inclusive resort in Fuerteventura. It was an amazing experience and I was instantly bitten by the travel bug and now want to see loads of different places and travel as much as we can.
How frequently Do you Travel : As frequently as possible, currently around seven times per year. We have committments at home meaning we need to fit our travel plans in around everyday life.
Why Are We Not On Camera: These videos are about the places, adventures, experiences and destinations. The videos are not about me / us - I'm not a TV presenter and I have absolutely not desire to be in front of the camera. Whilst not adverse to being on camera it's just not what our videos are about at the moment.
What's in our kitbag: Canon SX540, Canon SX510, various GoPro cameras including the Hero 3 and the Hero 4 Black plus a Nextbase Dashcam and Samsung and Apple cameraphones.
Our Favorite Places 2 Go Travel: Canary Islands, especially Lanzarote & Fuerteventura are big favourites with us because of the near year round sun and relaxing vibes.

A BIT OF HISTORY ON HASTINGS
Hastings began as a Saxon settlement. It was called Haesta ingas, which means Haesta's people. By the 10th century Hastings had grown into a little market town. It even had its own mint. In 1339 The French burn Hastings and in 1377 The French burn Hastings again but the town soon recovers and in 1563 the Plague strikes Hastings In the 16th century and 17th century Hastings slowly grew. In 1589 Queen Elizabeth granted Hastings a charter (a document granting the townspeople certain rights). Hastings gained a corporation and a mayor.During the Second World War Hastings was bombed several times and 154 people were killed. Over 15,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged.In 1339 The French burn Hastings and in 1377 The French burn Hastings again but the town soon recovers and in 1563 the Plague strikes Hastings. The plague killed an estimated 25 million people, almost a third of the continent’s population. The Black Death lingered on for centuries, particularly in cities. Outbreaks included the Great Plague of London (1665-66), in which 70,000 died. caves and smugglers tunneks have been used for many things over time and even untill this day caves in Hastings are still very much in use as museums, tourist attractions and storage units . So here we are at the start of 2016 and so I thought you might like to have a look at the Hastings Link Road whilst it is still there. Susannah kindly agreed to hold the camera as we take a look at Alfred's Old Burgh at Hastings and why it is important to now reinstate the heritage that is there at Wilting. Hastings needs it's cultural heritage on the ground and not in theoretical books. The time has come for the archaeologists to confirm that Hastings town was at Wilting Manor where the first Sheriffs of Hastings were installed. Its written in books now lets get the tourism going like in all the other 22 Burghs Alfred Built. History cannot be hidden by a road or politicians when its written in the ground.

Hastings is a town on England’s southeast coast. It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art.
Hastings is a town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London. Hastings gives its name to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. The town became a popular seaside resort in the 19th century with the coming of the railway. Hastings is a fishing port with a beach-based fishing fleet.
Some of the areas and suburbs of Hastings are Ore Valley, St Leonards, Silverhill, West St Leonards, and Hollington. Ore, Silverhill and Hollington were once villages that have since become part of the Hastings conurbation area during rapid growth. Hastings has four rail links: two to London, one to Brighton and one to Ashford. Of the London lines, the shorter is the Hastings Line, the former South Eastern Railway (SER) route to Charing Cross via Battle and Tunbridge Wells, which opened in 1852; and the longer is the East Coastway Line, the former London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) route to Victoria via Bexhill, Eastbourne and Lewes.
Hastings Castle was built in 1070 by the Normans, four years after the Norman invasion. It is located on the West Hill, overlooking the town centre and is a Grade I listed building. Little remains of the castle apart from the arch left from the chapel, part of the walls and dungeons. The nearby St. Clements Caves are home to the Smugglers Adventure, which features interactive displays relating to the history of smuggling on the south coast of England.
Hastings Pier can be seen from any part of the seafront in the town. The pier was closed in 2006 following safety concerns from the council. In October 2010, a serious fire burned down most of the buildings on the pier and caused further damage to the structure. However, the pier reopened on 27 April 2016 after a £14.2m refurbishment

Between Sunday 18th May and Friday 26th September 2014, the managers, teams and customers of all 625 Stonegate Pub Company pubs, bars and late night venues around the UK will attempt Britain's Biggest Ever Pub Tour.
THIS IS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR VARIETY THE CHILDREN'S CHARITY - Variety support children throughout the UK who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged.
Armed with a giant 'Pledge Passport' and starting at Yates's in Hastings, the teams from each pub will pass the passport from one pub to another using quirky and ingenious transportation methods. From roller-skating to zip-wiring, barrel rolling to helicopter riding, the challenge is on to complete the tour in just 124 days, finishing at Tower Bridge, London.
