Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana, [la aˈβana] is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial center of Cuba. The city has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the fourth largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbors: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the Americas, becoming a stopping point for treasure-laden Spanish galleons returning to Spain. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices. The current mayor is Marta Hernández of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC). In 2009, the city/province had the third highest income in the country.
The city attracts over a million tourists annually; the Official Census for Havana reports that in 2010 the city was visited by 1,176,627 international tourists, a 20% increase from 2005. Old Havana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments. As typical of Cuba, Havana experiences a tropical climate.
In May 2015, Havana was selected as one of the so-called New7Wonders Cities together with Beirut, Doha, Durban, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, and Vigan.
José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is an international airport located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación and Aerogaviota, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines. It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).
The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe and one destination each in Africa (to Luanda by TAAG Angola Airlines) and Asia (to Beijing, via Montreal by Air China). It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí.
In the 1960s, the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama and Bogotá, Colombia.

Havana Cuba City Tour 4K
A sightseeing tour through Havana belonged to us for the Varadero holiday. The lively capital has plenty to offer. The tour of the old town was very impressive, especially the Plaza Vieja (Old Square). Other highlights I got before the camera. These included, among others, Plaza de la Catedral, Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, San Francisco de Asís Square, Plaza de la Revolucion, Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Museo del Ron Havana Club. From Fort San Salvador (Castillo de San Salvador De La Punta) we had a nice view of the city. The busy streets with the many bars and restaurants and the colorful oldtimers rounded off this sunny day.

Havana Cuba travel things to do and see, La Habana #VisitCuba
Havana, Cuba! or La Habana! One of the most beautiful places to visit in Cuba and so much to do you won’t want to leave. On this first episode of Havana, I will share things to add to your itinerary, for when you plan your trip to Havana Cuba. We spent a total of 4 days in Havana and that wasn’t enough. Travel tips for your next adventure.
*TIPS*
- Download Maps.me in the app store before you depart to Cuba. Download the map of Cuba and you will have full access to the map of Cuba to get around or find your way if you get lost. No Internet or WiFi needed.
- Book your excursions ahead of time through U.S. based companies, they will sometimes be cheaper due to the loss of dollar value once you convert to $CUC. (You can always ask your host ahead of time if they have any suggestions or connections).
- Remember if you are flying from the U.S. no credit cards work in Cuba for you, and you have no access to banks. Plan your days accordingly and budget yourself every day so you don’t run out of money.
- Stay at a Casa Particular. It will be cheaper and your helping the Cuban people.

HAVANA TOURISM: the best things to do in Havana, Cuba.
To condense such a peculiar city like Havana, with its own rhythm, its own tastes, their own people and their particular lifestyle in only 10 places is difficult. In the list 'Top 10 Amazing Places of Havana' Cicerone Plus we leave aside the famous hotels and local prestige to focus on the most historic, both the 'Cold War' as the designated World Heritage Site.
Top 10 Amazing Places in Havana:
10 .- Revolution Square, the cradle of the Cuban Revolution and the cult of figures that prompted José Martí, the precursor, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.
9. Plaza de San Francisco de Asis (Square of San Francisco de Asis), where we find the homonymous 16th century convent that incorporates many religious objects of historical character. Baroque jewel converted into a museum and choral music room.
8. Paseo del Prado, Paseo de Martí today was built in the late 18th century, where simply walk from one end to another to find many buildings and sculptural monuments of Old Havana.
7. Plaza Vieja (Old Square), harmonized by valuable colonial buildings from the 17th century to 19th with a great aesthetic unity. There also found the Palace of the Counts of Jaruco that has several galleries.
6. Havana Cathedral, built in the 18th century in baroque style, the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception has several tombs and objects of famous people of the city and Cuba. Also in the square surrounding there are some of the most prominent colonial mansions.
5. Museums of Fine Arts, across the avenue the Missions are 2 Museums of Fine Arts: one dedicated to Cuban art and one to Universal art.
4. Museum of the Revolution, conceived in the early 20th century's canons of eclecticism, a dome at its summit as crown and outdoor memorials. A key to understanding the political and ideological heritage of the Cuban wars museum. It houses historical and artistic works of the late 15th century to the present.
3. The Temple, a small temple in neoclassical style of the early 19th century, home to large canvases of the time that had a considerable influence on Cuban architecture and in neighboring countries. In the Plaza de Armas, where it is, there are many varied plastic, sculptural and ornamental works.
2. The 4 Fortresses of Havana:
Castle of San Carlos de la Cabaña, mid 18th century, was the largest in Cuba and throughout the Americas, built by Spain.
Morro Castle, the 16th century, the castle of the 3 Kings of Morro, seen at the entrance to the bay of the city, from its conception is a prominent symbol of Havana. The lighthouse dates from the 19th century.
Castle of Real Fuerza, also from the 16th century, which even boasts its impressive military architecture and is now a museum of colonial times.
Fortress of San Salvador de la Puntilla, late 16th century, winner of a National Archaeological Restoration Award.
Honorable mention:
El Malecón
Before revealing the number one, we show a place that even without such a significant historical weight as those already mentioned, it is certainly pleasant visit to mingle with Cubans, breathing the sea air and enjoy spectacular sunsets. The Malecon of Havana is the Caribbean's most famous promenade.
1. Cuba National Capitol, striking symbol of the city of Havana and one of the great buildings of all Cuba. Its dome is one of the largest in the world of great architectural richness, with clean lines and beautiful proportions and decorated with great magnificence. The Capitol declared a National Monument of Cuba.

Cuba Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Cuba – Enjoy old-world architecture, famous cigars and classic cars in this long-isolated island nation. Check out Cuba’s top sights for travelers.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Cuba:
Despite being within easy reach of Florida and the Bahamas, #Cuba exists in a time and space all its own.
Explore Cuba’s capital, Havana, a city preserved by forts, a five-mile seawall, and an imposed embargo, which held back the excesses of the 20th century for over 50 years. Havana’s lure can be hard to resist, but a #vacation in Cuba can offer so much more beyond the seductive lights of its capital. In Cuba, a long sandy beach is never far away.
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether Cuba is awakening to the world, or if the world is awakening to Cuba. Whatever your politics, it's easy to admire this island nation that has proudly gone its own way. Cuba may still have one foot firmly in the past, but as the world tumbles towards tomorrow, we can be thankful for the many things it has not let go.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Havana Cuba Tour via Cruise (4K)
See where we visited during our 2 day stay in Havana Cuba via a Holland America cruise in June 2018, while taking in the sights and sounds we experienced. As you can see in this vlog, we did our own walking tour, in addition to a horse carriage tour and one via a 1957 Chevrolet Be Air vintage car which didn't even have seat belts!
We started from the Havana cruise terminal Sierra Maestra- for a more in depth look, tips & helpful information such as money exchange, please see our Havana Cruise Port video here:
The places we visited included:
• Plaza de San Francisco (directly opposite of the cruise port)
• Plaza de Armas, the oldest Plaza of Havana where there is a statue of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and the El Templete Temple where the city was founded in 1519
• Parque Luz Caballero where we took a 2 hour horse carriage tour
On the horse carriage hour we saw:
• Our cruise ship the Holland America Veendam
• The Russian Church called Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Cathedral
• Parque Aracelo Iglesias
• Iglesia de Paula Catholic Church
• Revolution Plaza
• Almacenes San Jose Artisan's Market
• The Ferry Terminal that takes passengers across the canal
The ride was fine but in retrospect I would have done just a one hour tour instead of 2, as it took a while to get to Revolution Plaza via horse.
Afterwards we tried out some local Cuban food at a restaurant recommended by our Horse Carriage tour guide. For 25 CUC we ate Lobster in Cuban sauce and came with plantains, and a Mojito. The lobster was pretty good- though I believe we got overcharged because a minute after we left we saw the menu of a nearby restaurant selling the same dish for 12 CUC.
We then walked and visited:
• Plaza de la Catedral, where the impressive Catedral de la Virgen Maria is located
• Castillo de la Real Fuerza
• Cuban street art in the form of colorful graffiti and others by local artists
• Iglesia del Santo Angel Custodio church
• Museum of the Revolution
We then took a Vintage Car tour and saw:
• Maximo Gomez monument at Parque del Artires Del 71
• Tunel de la Habana
• The outdoors Military Museum
• Christ of Havana/El Cristo de La Habana
• Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro
Afterwards we walked and saw:
• Jose Marti statue at Plaza 13 de Marzo
• Victor Hugo house
• Bank of Nova Scotia building
• Hotel Ambos Mundos
• Mercaderes Street
• El Cubo Havana Modern Sewer Pumping Station
It was then back to the cruise ship for the end of day 1.
We then took a look at Havana after dark from our ship and you can see our footage in this video as well.
The next day we did our own walking tour and saw:
• Plaza Vieja (Old Town Square)
• Museum of Pharmacy Habanera
• Teniente Rey Street and a marketplace there, including a merchant selling super-cute puppies
• Teatro Marti Performing Arts Theater
• Saratoga Hotel
• El Capitolo, the former capitol building, where we took a break and did some people/car watching
• Parque de la Fraternidad/Fraternity Park
• Chinatown Gate
• Gran Teatro de La Habana/Great Theatre of Havana
• Havana Central Park where there is another statue of Jose Marti
• Gran Hotel Manzana & Cohiba Atmosphere Mall
• Granma Memorial which is an extension to the Revolution Museum
• Havana Police Headquarters Fort
• Cuba Street
• Empedrado Street
• Casa del Marques de Arcos & the Mural of Aristocrats directly opposite
• Palacio de los Capitanes Generales
We then headed back to the cruise terminal, ending our terrific 2 day visit in Havana! The architecture in Havana was very impressive, and the people were very friendly. Please feel free to comment and if you have any questions we're more than happy to answer!

What to do in Old Havana Cuba! | Our food and sightseeing tour of La Habana Vieja
What should you do in Old Havana? If you're like us and you like to explore a new city by foot, a self-guided walking tour is a great way to go. Here is our food and sightseeing tour of La Habana Vieja Cuba.
We spent several days wandering the streets of Habana Vieja during our 2019 trip to Cuba. For this tour, we've rounded up a few of our favourite stops and highlights for you to check out.
From start to finish –– with stops for food, coffee, cocktails and museums –– this #walkingtour of #oldhavana should take approximately 4-6 hours.
We think this is a great way to see just some of the many sites and attractions of this stunning neighbourhood. All while sampling the wide range of food and drinks to be had!
Enjoy and have fun!

Havana Travel Vlog: Top Things To Do In Cuba, La Habana #VisitCuba
Havana, Cuba! Episode 2! One of the most beautiful places to visit in Cuba and so much to do you will want to come back. On this second episode I share more activities to add to your itinerary, for when you plan your trip to Havana Cuba. Tobacco fields, horseback riding, bike tour around Havana are some travel tips for your next adventure.
*TIPS*
- The city of Vinales is a little over 2hrs away by car from Havana. Prepare to make that a full day trip. If you do horseback riding make sure to bring mosquito repellent, sun screen, a change of socks and shorts/pants. You get full of mud on your legs.
- The bike tour can take up to 4hrs or longer, make sure you are ready to bike for a long time. Bring a small back pack and bring water, small snacks.
- If you go out at night to a club/disco make sure you arrange taxi pick up from your casa particular and the way back. It can be hard to find a taxi at times late at night. We happen to have a club 2 blocks away from our house.
- If you are going souvenir shopping, go to old Havana they have great shops there to find “Guayaberas” shirts or other souvenirs.
