Israeli Photographer's Unique Approach to Capturing History
HOLY LAND UNCOVERED | The famous Nabataean city of Shivta, a UNESCO site in the Negev desert, is where a famous Jesus painting was discovered earlier this year.
A new exhibition by photographer Dror Ma'ayan tries to follow the footsteps of two 19th century explorers and photographers who were the first to capture the ancient site with their camera. Ma'ayan re-enacts these unique photos using the same cameras of the mid-19th century. Our Uri Shapira has the story.

Israeli photographer Dror Ma'ayan uses the same cameras and techniques as those used in early photography.
'There is no comparison to the modern technology that we're all used to — digital technology,' Ma'ayan explains. But there is something unique about the value of old photography.
Recently, Ma'ayan launched a new exhibition at the Hecht museum in Haifa called 'Photo-Archaeology'. Ma'ayan wraps up a long term project where he traced the footsteps of two researchers, E.H. Palmer and Charles Drake.
'Drake and Palmer were the first researchers to document the Byzantine ruins in the Negev… and they were almost totally forgotten,' Ma'ayan says.
The exhibition features rare original pictures from the 19th century, taken by Drake and Palmer, and the new photos by Ma'ayan — side by side.
Comparing the two time periods, we can definitely see the extreme changes in this area over the course of nearly 150 years — from deserted and neglected sites in the Negev, to a vivid archaeological site and a national park. The evolution pf photography is also evident.
