Hedley BC, The Black Light Gallery
A modern day find in historic Hedley BC! In April 2012 Janer B and I were returning home from a road trip through Kamloops and then south through the Okanagan valley in the southern interior of BC Canada.
On this particular Monday morning we departed the hills above Oliver and travelled the Old Fairview Road over to Cawston in the Similkameen Valley; this is a very quiet, sometimes steep dirt road through beautiful high country. Driving West along the Crowsnest Highway we passed through Keremeos and on to Hedley.
I have driven past Hedley many times over the years but never really stopped for a visit. As this was April, things were pretty quiet about the town with the museum closed and no tourists floating around. High in the hills is much evidence of the old mine workings, which placed Hedley on the modern map. We looked at some of the museum's interesting outdoor exhibits briefly and then wandered across the street to an interesting looking building, which turned out to be the old gas station and livery stable before it. Here we met Rod, who was working in the shop, building some rustic garden furniture out of Chinese hardwood pallets.
We immediately struck up a conversation about Hedley, past & present and how Rod came to be in such an interesting place. Rod had lots of fascinating stories to tell about the artifacts he has collected, the old mines and life in Hedley.
Before too long, Rod invited us to view his black light gallery, devoted to his local artist friend; this was a most unusual experience in a unique setting - certainly not something we expected to see!
Many thanks indeed to Rod and Valerie for being so hospitable. One day we hope to return and listen to some more stories.

Hedley
Location of Hedley in British Columbia
Hedley is an unincorporated town in southern British Columbia, Canada, named after Robert R. Hedley, the manager of the Hall Smelter in Nelson.[1] Hedley is located at the foot of Nickel Plate Mountain in the Similkameen. The town had a population of approximately 400 as of 2005. In the early 1900s, Hedley's population peaked over 1,000 people, primarily due to the gold mining industry. The Hedley Museum and the Mascot Mine Museum display artifacts and photographs from this era.
Princeton is the closest neighbouring town, approximately 38 kilometres (24 mi) west on the Crowsnest Highway. The nearest community to the east is Keremeos, approximately 29 kilometres (18 mi) away.
Twenty Mile Creek, once known as Hedley Creek, flows southwest through the town & joins the Similkameen River shortly downstream.

A walk from Moncton High to the edge of the city
Destroying a heritage building doesn't make sense economically, from an energy point of view, or from the better practices of building a community. Yet the government persists in its ill conceived idea. Spending $70 million that is not necessary in an era of deficits and making our community less sustainable is a step in a backward direction.
