Henley Royal Regatta - Henley on River Thames | Sports Events & Stadium
Henley Royal Regatta (or Henley Regatta, its original name pre-dating Royal patronage) is a rowing event held annually on the River Thames by the town of Henley-on-Thames, England.
It was established on 26 March 1839. It differs from the three other regattas rowed over approximately the same course, Henley Women's Regatta, Henley Masters Regatta and Henley Town and Visitors' Regatta, each of which is an entirely separate event.

Henley-on-Thames is a charming Oxfordshire town. The bridge over the river, built in 1786, is a popular landmark. Today Henley is probably most famous for its international rowing regatta, which attracts top international crews from around the globe.
Also popular is the River & Rowing Museum. The Museum has three main galleries devoted to the River Thames, the international sport of rowing, and the town of Henley. Raised on columns above “water meadows” beside the Thames and built of exposed concrete and glass with a steel roof, clad in green oak, the Museum has won numerous awards for its innovative architectural design.

The English summer season is well under way with the start of Henley Royal Regatta, under a typically English overcast sky.
The Regatta on the River Thames attracts hundreds of oarsmen -- and thousands of socialites.
Henley Royal Regatta is as English as strawberries and cream - and a dismal summer.
Despite the July rain, rowers mingled with spectators to enjoy one of the highlights of the English season.
The young and fit come to compete in skulls (singles), pairs, fours and eights races.
Everyone else dresses up to savour the atmosphere.
When it was set up in 1839 the regatta was raced over a single afternoon -- now it lasts five days and will attract a quarter of a million visiors to the Thames Valley town west of London.

We've got 16 trophies here, we've had a record entry and in an Olympic year that's quite gratifying.

Competitors come from all over the world including this year, Australia, South Africa, Japan and Pakistan.
They race for a range of cups over a notoriously demanding 1.25 miles course.
That's longer than an Olympic 2000 metre course -- and against the current.
But it's a popular challenge.

Some of the best club, university and college crews are here from throughout the world and certainly offers the athletes the chance to test themselves against the best of the best.

But for thousands more the Henley Regatta is just a great day out.
The exclusive hospitality tents serve champagne all day and emphasis is on dressing up.
Even diehard racing fans like to play the dandy.
