Coventry - City of Spires
The first part of the History Gallery looks at life in late medieval Coventry, from 1450 to 1509. In many ways this was a 'golden age' for the city. Coventry was the largest city in the Midlands and one of the most important in England. It was a thriving commercial centre with a population of around 10,000 merchants, craftspeople, monks and labourers.

Peace & Reconciliation Gallery - Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry.
The Peace and Reconciliation gallery at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum tells the story of Coventry's role in promoting peace and reconciliation around the world.
This grew out of the city's experiences in the Second World War and especially the Blitz of 14 November 1940, when more than 500 people were killed and the Cathedral was destroyed. Just a few weeks after the Blitz, the Cathedral Provost Richard Howard made a speech from the ruins, calling for forgiveness for those who had carried out the attack.
After the war, Coventry actively developed links with other cities which had suffered similar destruction including those in former enemy countries such as Dresden. Today many agencies and individuals in the city work to promote peace and reconciliation.
The gallery features key objects and artworks from the museum's collection, including John Piper's iconic painting of the ruins of Coventry Cathedral on the morning after the Blitz. There are also many fascinating personal stories of the Coventry Blitz and experiences of conflict in other parts of the world. Together they tell this poignant and unique part of Coventry's history.
Coventry Biennial | The Twin | Art Exhibition
OPEN 5 OCTOBER 2019 - 26 JANUARY 2020
at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry.
FIND OUT MORE:
The artists and groups exhibiting in The Twin all explore themes, ideas and processes which resonate through this international city including translation, collaboration and togetherness while also exploring some of the difficulties presented by globalisation, political inequality and conflict.
We are an international city; Coventry and Volgograd, Russia, were the first modern twin cities in the world and this year marks the 75th anniversary of that historic bond of friendship.
Coventry now has 26 twins around the world and is known as a city that welcomes migrants and refugees. When walking the city’s streets Punjabi, Urdu and Polish can frequently be heard alongside accents from across the West Midlands, nearby Warwickshire and Ireland.
Artists who are presenting work at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum during Coventry Biennial 2019 include:
James Bridle, Lorsen Camps, David Cheeseman, Anna Columbine, Stephen Cornford, Maud Cotter, Katrina Cowling, Paul Crook, Anne Forgan, Dylan Fox, Mona Hatoum, Andrew Jackson, Ioana Marinescu, Adele Mary Reed, Lorna Mills, Alexandra Müller, Mathew Parkin, Parmar & Piper, Matthew Picton, Duncan Poulton, Lis Rhodes, Rafaël Rozendaal, Richard Scott, Mhairi Vari, Grace A Williams

A City of Industry
The end of the Middle Ages saw Coventry's influence decline. During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) the city's fortunes revived. The Herbert's displays capture the essence of this important time in Coventry's development as a modern city.
For most of the Victorian period two industries dominated in Coventry: ribbon weaving and watch making. Both are well represented in the History Gallery through products and tools of the trades.
Alongside great wealth there existed great poverty, typified by the slums in the city's courts. The Herbert provides a glimpse into the lives of Coventry's people -- rich and poor -- at one of the most exciting times in the it's its history.
Coventry - City of Dreams
Coventry from 1939 to the present.
Our story of modern Coventry starts in 1939, the year the Second World War began, and continues to the present day.
The opening part of the Gallery looks at the city's experiences in the Second World War. As a centre of war production, Coventry was one of the first to suffer a major attack.
The post-war period saw a new sense of optimism and prosperity.Along with the new buildings, post-war Coventry saw the profile of its population change too. New citizens came here from Ireland, the former colonies of the British Empire and the new countries of the Commonwealth. The Gallery examines the contribution they have made to the life of the city through oral history, photographs, film and objects.
The Gallery traces the industrial decline of the city in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Two Tone music movement captured the anger and despair felt by many inhabitants.

Alice Arnold - First Female Mayor of Coventry
On February 6 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed, giving thousands of British women over the age of 30 the right to vote in general elections.
To mark this anniversary we’re sharing the political story of one of Coventry’s female trailblazers, Alice Arnold.
So watch, be inspired and take a moment to think… which women inspire you?
