HOLLAND: Den Haag HS railway station / 'Het Strijkijzer' [HD]
'Den Haag Hollands Spoor' railway station is the oldest railway station in The Hague, Netherlands.
It was opened in 1843, when the Oude Lijn, the oldest railway line in the country, was extended to The Hague.
The railway station was named after the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, the company that operated the railway station.
The Hague has two main railway stations: Centraal Station and Hollands Spoor. Trains from Amsterdam to Rotterdam and beyond (e.g., to Brussels and Paris) stop at Hollands Spoor, not at Centraal Station.
The original railway building of 1843 was replaced by the current building designed by D.A.N. Margadant in 1891.
-----------------------------
The tall building next to the station is called 'Het Strijkijzer'. (2:28)
Het Strijkijzer is a residential and office skyscraper. It is 132 metres tall with 42 floors and is the second tallest building in the city.
In 2007 the building was awarded the Hague New City Prize and the international Emporis Skyscraper Award.
Inspired by the Flatiron Building in New York City, its name is the Dutch word for the ironing appliance.

Winkelstad Den Haag - Shops at the Hague - The Netherlands
The Hague officially also 's-Gravenhage, is the third largest city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with a great population and an area of approximately 100 km². It is located in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, of which it is also the provincial capital. The Hague is the centre of a conurbation called Haaglanden and lies at the southwest corner of a larger conurbation called the Randstad.
The Hague is the seat of the Dutch parliament, government and Royal Court (but the city is not the capital of the Netherlands which is a role set aside in the Dutch constitution for Amsterdam). Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands lives and works in The Hague. All foreign embassies and government ministries are located in the city, as well as the Hoge Raad der Nederlanden (Supreme Court), the Raad van State (Council of State) and many lobbying organisations.
The Hague is also the seat of over 150 international organisations, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. It is one of the major cities of the UN, along with New York and Geneva .
The Hague is particularly well regarded for its many antique shops and art galleries, which you can admire along the Denneweg and Noordeinde. However, if fashion is more what you're after, you'll be spoilt for choice here too.
The easiest way to explore The Hague's city centre is on foot, particularly as most of the shopping area is a pedestrian zone. It is a short walk from the Central Railway Station along the Korte Poten and Lange Poten to Spui.
Most shops are open seven days a week. On Mondays, shops open at 1pm (department stores at 11am). From Tuesdays to Fridays, opening hours are 9am to 6pm and until 9pm on Thursday evenings. On Saturdays, hours are 9am to 5pm and Sundays, noon to 5 or 6pm.

HOLLAND: Peace Palace / Vredespaleis - The Hague [HD]
The Peace Palace in The Hague houses the International Court of Justice (since 1946), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (since 1913), the Hague Academy of International Law, and the extensive Peace Palace Library.
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial body of the United Nations.
In November 1903 the Carnegie Foundation was founded by Andrew Carnegie in order to manage his donation of US$1.5 million for the construction of the Palace, ownership, and maintenance. This foundation is still responsible for these issues at present date.
The Peace Palace opened its gates in 1913, after six years of construction. The design, set in the Neo-Renaissance style, was submitted by French architect Louis M. Cordonnier.
The Palace is filled with gifts from different nations. Among the gifts are a 3.2-tonne vase from Russia, entrance doors from Belgium, marble from Italy, a fountain from Denmark, wall carpets from Japan, tower clock from Switzerland, persian rugs from Iran, wood from Indonesia and USA, and entrance gates from Germany.
More gifts:
There is no free access to the Peace Palace. Visitors are required to join a guided tour by advanced booking. The gardens are not accessible. Filming inside is not allowed (...so I was told after I filmed the entrance hall).

(4:02) State berlin carriages from the Royal Stables
The Royal Stables has a fleet of six state berlins. The name comes from the German city, where the carriages were first built in 1662. A berlin is a covered carriage which can seat four people. The carriages are painted black and burgundy and can be drawn by two or four horses. The state berlins are used regularly.

The Hague seen from Het Strijkijzer ('electric iron') Oktober 2010
This movie I took with my Sony Cybershot DSC TX-5 photocamera (HD-quality!).
You can see The Hague from one of the highest buildings in the city. The building is in the language of the people called Strijkijzer (electric iron), because of the shape.
