Kobe Luminarie is an annual winter light-up held in memory of the victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Now running for over 20 years, the event takes place in the vicinity of Motomachi Station on the JR Kobe Line starting at the Former Foreign Settlement and extending to Higashi Yuenchi Park.
A festival of light, which has been held in December every year since 1995 as a memorial and requiem of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and to pray for recovery of the town. It began eleven months after the Kobe Earthquake in 1995 with the hope to give courage and greatly inspire the people of Kobe. Because there was a strong desire for continuation after its conclusion, it became an annual event symbolizing the hope of Kobe citizens.
Geometric illuminations decorate the squares and streets, and during the festival a corridor of light called the Galleria runs through Nakamachi-dori street. In its heyday the festival attracted more than 5 million visitors but in recent years, due to energy-saving policies and a shortened festival period, it draws between 3 and 3.5 Million.
Kobe Luminarie is an Italian designed light festival. Luminarie is the plural form of Italian word luminaria that stands for Illumination with miniature bulbs.

JAPAN: Kobe earthquake marks 20th anniversary
The 20th Anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake.
Filmed January 17, 2015. Kobe, Japan.
People offer a moment of silence in front of bamboo lanterns and pray for the victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in the early morning at Higashi Yuenchi park in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Jan. 17, 2014, marking the 20th anniversary of the disaster that claimed 6,434 poeple lives.
The Great Hanshin earthquake (阪神・淡路大震災 Hanshin Awaji daishinsai?), or Kobe earthquake, occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at 05:46 JST (January 16 at 20:46 UTC) in the southern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale (USGS),[2] and Mj7.3 (adjusted from 7.2) on JMA magnitude scale.[3] The tremors lasted for approximately 20 seconds. The focus of the earthquake was located 16 km beneath its epicenter,[3] on the northern end of Awaji Island, 20 km away from the city of Kobe.
Approximately 6,434 people lost their lives (final estimate as of December 22, 2005); about 4,600 of them were from Kobe.[1] Among major cities, Kobe, with its population of 1.5 million, was the closest to the epicenter and hit by the strongest tremors. This was Japan's worst earthquake in the 20th century after the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, which claimed more than 105,000 lives. The 1995 earthquake caused approximately ten trillion yen ($100 billion) in damage, 2.5% of Japan's GDP at the time.

Kobe Port Bridge ! 第8回明石・時感動アクアスロン大会の神戸ポート大橋でのトレーニング !
In just 21 days, I'll join the Akashi TokiKando Aquathlon!
I've been training in various locations around Kobe! This time I jogged from Sannomiya Station over the Kobe Port Bridge which connects the mainland to Port Island, a reclaimed land structure which connects to Kobe Airport.
From the city to the sea! Along the way, I stopped by Minato No Mori Park which has a skateboard ramps, basketball courts, natural grass, and running tracks.
The running portion of the Aquathlon is 5 kilometers after a 500 meter swim. I hope I'll have enough energy to run after swimming! This year's 8th annual Akashi Aquathlon on July 15, 2019 (Marine Day in Japan) at Okura Kaigan Beach in Akashi City is going to be amazing!
What kind of places do you like to jog/exercise?
