High Knob Recreation Area camp ground look around
A look around High Knob Recreation Area's camp ground - S.W. Virginia near Norton in Wise County. Campground Elevation 3800 feet. The camp host came around a warned that there are active bears in the area. I think the one family camping left after the bear warning. You can get to this site on an extremely steep and curvy switchback paved road or a less steep and curvy gravel road - bascally one lane. Take your pick... This campsite is a hidden gem if you like rustic camping, solutude and quiet. It also has a nice little swimming lake with a beach for the hot summer days and a look out tower that claims a 5 state view. I camped on July 2 and the elevation and shade from the muture trees made for a chilly night even as the day time temps were well into the 80's

Access to High Knob
The main access to High Knob have been closed since the spring, because the rain and spring run-off wash out a culvert and part of the road with it. We came up a back road the long way around and were exploring around these roads.

Hike to High Knob Firetower on Shenandoah Mountain,Wv/Va 8-12-16
This 2 mile out and back hike starts in the George Washington National Forest, on Shenandoah Mountain, in Pendelton County, West Virginia, and ends at a cool lookout tower in Rockingham County, Virginia. Parking, and the trailhead, is located in West Virginia, on National Route 33 just near the Virginia/West Virginia state line. The hike is moderate, and in retrospect I would rate it 3.5 out of 5 Billygoats, although my girlfriend gives it a solid 4. For a longer, much more strenuous hike, one can start at the Brandywine Recreation Area, in West Virginia, and climb all the way up Shenandoah Mountain to reach the tower. Also, there are many other trails to explore in the general vicinity. This was our first trip to the George Washington National Forest and it did not disappoint. We plan on visiting again in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Stone Mountain, Virginia: A Fire Tower Rises from the Ashes on High Knob
High Knob is the peak of Stone Mountain, that forms part of the border between Scott County and Wise County, Virginia near the city of Norton that rises to 4,223 feet ( 1,287 meters ) above mean sea level.
At its peak stood one of the few remaining fire towers of the Appalachian Mountains. Built in 1938–39 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the original structure was a 14' × 14' wooden house. The replacement lookout, a three-story structure, was built by the Flatwoods Job Corps in 1978–79. High Knob's fire tower is listed in the National Historic Lookout Registry.
On October 31, 2007, the High Knob Lookout Tower was destroyed by arson. The tower was set on fire in the early hours of Halloween morning. By the time the Jefferson Forest Service and local fire departments arrived on scene, the fire tower was fully engulfed in flames, and could not be saved. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the Knob, which was suffering from drought conditions. In 2009 work began in earnest to replace the ruined tower. A tower replacement project was spearheaded by The High Knob Enhancement Corporation who raised required funding from donations. Under the direction of the National Park service Hill studio architects and Landscape Architects submitted designs and construction documents for the new tower now roughly standing where the lost tower once stood. The tower was built by DOT Construction. The formal date of completion is August 22, 2014. The new tower achieves accessibility for physically impaired visitors by conceiving a properly graded and surfaced loop trail that culminates in a bridge crossing which connects the tower with the trail.
Thanks again to Josh Wilson for the use of his drone for the aerial footage! It's good to have friends that don't mind to share their expensive toys! lol

One for the Books...Little Stoney, VA
Flowing off of the High Knob area of Stone Mountain in Southwest Virginia, the Little Stoney carves its way almost 1,000 feet in less than 3 miles to its confluence with the Clinch River. Along the way it crashes over picturesque waterfalls, long curvy slides, and complex boulder gardens. Upon arriving at the put in, we were greeted with a surprise blizzard, dumping over 15 inches in 3 hours. Needless to say, visibility was low. We should not have been surprised as it is the snowiest landscape in the state of Virginia. Enjoy these next few moments as Watersheds Films explores the infamous Little Stoney, most certainly One for the Books.

Exploring Flag Rock Recreation Area in Southwest Virginia
The Flag Rock Recreation Area is also known as “Norton’s Mountain Masterpiece”. It boasts 25 developed acres, which includes our Flag Rock Overlook. Aptly named after German immigrant Karl Matuszczyk, planted an American Flag on this large outcropping rock in the 1920’s. Flag Rock was dedicated in 1974 and opened on June 12 1976.
The view from the Flag Rock overlook affords a panoramic view of downtown Norton and the surrounding area. Numerous picnic tables are scattered throughout the park as well as two rental shelters that have large covered grill areas, fireplaces, electric and water. Restroom facilities are walking distance of the two covered rental shelters.
Also located at the two rental shelters is playground equipment as well as a field for other recreational activities, Rates for each of these covered shelters are $50.00 per day. Camping facilities are available in both upper and lower campgrounds. Both campgrounds have bathhouses with hot showers. With a breathtaking view of the mountains, these campsites are available on a first come first serve basis for only $20.00 per night.
For the avid walker, a hiking trail runs from the upper campground to the Norton Reservoir, which is seasonally stocked with rainbow trout. A trail to Legion Park is accessible from the upper restroom.
The Flag Rock Recreation area is located on Rt. 619, Three miles above the City of Norton.
