Goldstream Trestle Hike near Victoria
The hike to Goldstream Trestle is one of the more popular hikes around Victoria. The hike is located within Goldstream Provincial Park and can be accomplished within about 2 hours. The hike to the Goldstream Trestle has a fair amount of elevation as well, making it a good workout.
Along the way you are treated with an up-close view of the gorgeous Niagara Falls. While not as big as that other Niagara Falls in Ontario, this waterfall in Goldstream Park is an impressive 156 feet (47 meters).

Today we are going on a hike on the Kludahk. There are some rumours that the Kludahk is a secret society. This is perhaps because they have a membership process, it is in the back country, located in an environmentally sensitive area and the roads to access the Kludahk can often be washed out and signage is not that great to get there.
Kludahk is Nuu-chah-nulth for “home of the elk”. The trail passes through the Pacheedaht peoples of Port Renfrew traditional territory. The late Chief, Kenny Jones, named the trail in honour of this special place.
For our hike, we walked about 10 km of the 48 km trail that runs east to west along the San Juan Ridge. The Kludahk parallels the Juan de Fuca Straight between Jordan River and Port Renfrew. Many of you will also know the West Coast Trail, well the Kludahk parallels some of the 75 km West Coast Trail is part of the ancient paths and paddling routes used for trade and travel by First Nations in the Pacific Rim National Park.
Going for a hike on the Kludahk today is super special because for up to 6-7 months of the year, from November to June, the trail is covered with snow. It is not unusual for the trail to get 25 feet of snow, in which case the trail is not visible. In the autumn and spring the trails are very wet. Because the Kludahk passes through a number of meadows and bogs, it is important to protect the trail from too much of a ¨footprint.¨ That leaves a few weeks in the summer months to explore the trail!
In the summer, it will take you 3 days to hike the 40 km of the Kludahk trail if you are super fit. However if you want to enjoy the scenery it is recommended that you take 4 nights and 5 days. That way you can enjoy your time and your surroundings.
Anybody can become a member of the Kludahk society. Membership is $35/year for individuals and $50 for families, along with your agreement to do be involved in the work of maintaining the trail and the application process.
The Kludahk society maintains the brush, hauls in the tread plates you saw us hiking across, they clear blowdowns and they maintain the cabins. The Kludahk society has built 5 cabins along the trail which provide shelter for day hikers. If you want to stay overnight in a cabin, you must be a member of the Kludahk. The cabins are open and as you can see we went in and had a look around. You can take refuge from the weather, or bugs, or make a cup of tea or a meal. There is wood and any other supplies you might need there available for donation.
Of course, the biggest surprise of our day were the wasps which were stinging, multiple times and multiple people in our party. I don´t know if it was the time of the year or if the nests had been disturbed, but if you are allergic, come prepared!
Let us know what you liked best about our hike, please comment, like and subscribe.

Abandoned Train Trestle Bridge - Goldstream Provincial Park, BC
Amazing guide and long time friend, Brendan, showed Nicole and Mike a hidden gem, just outside of Victoria. In Goldstream Provincial Park, there is an abandoned train trestle bridge, but to get to it, you have to get through a tunnel and hike past a waterfall. Watch until the end to see Mike almost break his ankle.
Nicole and Mike then quickly explore Canada's oldest Chinatown, in downtown Victoria, before flying back to Vancouver on a Harbour Air seaplane, thus crossing it off Mike's bucket list!
If you're going to Victoria, make sure you have one of these:

This past week I was experiencing a decline in my mental health due to cabin fever. It was time to escape the four white walls of my apartment and get outdoors. We had no food in our house so we combined it with a trip to the farm and got lunch at The Roost in North Saanich.
We love going to the Roost in North Saanich for lunch because they have amazing sandwiches. Victoria BC. had a good amount of snow last Wednesday so we were somewhat concerned about the snow travelling around Victoria and the surrounding area.
We ended up on a trail just off of Bear Hill Drive in Saanichton. It is funny that we have never taken any of these trails before because we are quite often in this area picking up our local fruits and vegetables from Dan’s Farm and Country Market and Firbank farm.
There are a series of paths that run from the roads all the way down by Dan’s Farm, even as low as Elk Lake and Beaver Lake. Or you can take the short cuts and drive further up the hill like we did and start the trail further up.
Make sure you say hi to the adorable miniature ponies on your way up the paths. They are quite friendly and like to be pet on their noses.
It was good to get out and enjoy the views from close to the top :) Another way to make the trail a little easier is to avoid going all the way to the top.
If you made it all the way to the end, let me know if you are a fabulous finisher by putting, “I’m cured of my cabin fever” in the comments.
See you next week :)

#YYJTRAILS 09 - Francis King Regional Park - Elsie King Loop - Victoria, British Columbia.
If you're looking for the most accessible and child friendly trail that is available in Victoria, then the Elsie King Loop at Francis King Regional Park is the one to try out this weekend. Take the family for a quick 20-30 min loop and engage in all of the educational signs along the way. If you want to spice it up a bit you can always veer off the trail over to the Centennial Trail and loop back to the parking lot. Otherwise, bring a lunch and hot chocolate to relax at one of the picnic tables afterwards.
