HIMALAYA TIBET MUSEUM - Darjeeling India
We were very lucky to see this wonderful little museum because normally it is closed on Wednesdays but the manager was in her office and she opened it for us to tour since we had to leave the Darjeeling he next day. One of the highlights for me was the collection of natural holistic medicines from the Tibetan culture and the brightly coloured costumes. Great explanation of the Buddhist culture and the history of the people from the Himalayan mountains.
Miniature of Himalayan belt at Tibet Himalayan Museum, Darjeeling
A miniature model of the whole Himalayan belt being displayed at Tibet Himalayan Museum in Darjeeling, West Bengal.
This is the newest museum in Darjeeling inaugurated on 2nd July 2015 by revered Tibetan guru Gurung Tulku Nima Hoiser Rinpoche. The timing was so chosen to coincide with the 80th birthday celebration of Dalai Lama.
The museum is located on Gandhi road and within easy walking distance from the town center (i.e. the clock tower area). As the name suggests, the museum is mainly about the Tibetan community although it has several exhibits and artifacts of other communities along the Himalayan belt as well.
There are other Tibetan museums in India, but they mostly focus on the religious aspects of Tibetans. This museum has its main focus on the history and culture of the Tibetans rather than their religious backgrounds. And the reason for that being it's a unit of Manjushree Centre of Tibetan Culture which is a well known non-profit organization in Darjeeling that has been working on preservation of Tibetan history, heritage, culture and language since long.
The museum is located at the ground floor of Manjushree Centre. Upstairs, the organization also runs a small lodging-only budget hotel called Tibet Home which helps to generate some funding. But there is a strange background to why and how this museum was first conceived. The president of Manjushree Centre Ngawang Tenzin Gyatso was in Lhasa of Tibet in 2007 when he visited the National Museum there. It is built on the theme of Chinese occupied Tibet. He figured out that the Chinese had manipulated the history of Tibet to suite their own story and misrepresented the facts about Tibetan history and culture. He decided to create a Tibetan museum in Darjeeling to straighten out the facts.

HIMALAYAN MUSEUM AT DARJEELING, WEST BENGAL, INDIA
Nestled among the rolling mountains with the glistening Mt Kanchenjunga towering over the azure sky, Darjeeling fondly called Queen of the Hills, provides a perfect gateway for those seeking to be in harmony with nature.
The world heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway where the century old miniature steam engine still chugs uphill vying for space with the fast disappearing Land Rovers.
Darjeeling (दार्जलिङ / দার্জিলিং) is a town and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 6,700 ft (2,042.2 m). It is noted for its tea industry, the spectacular views of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Darjeeling is the headquarters of Darjeeling district which has a partially autonomous status within the state of West Bengal. It is also a popular tourist destination in India.
The recorded history of the town starts from the early 19th century when the colonial administration under the British Raj set up a sanatorium and a military depot in the region. Subsequently, extensive tea plantations were established in the region and tea growers developed hybrids of black tea and created new fermentation techniques. The resultant distinctive Darjeeling tea is internationally recognized and ranks among the most popular black teas in the world.
Tibetan Village Darjeeling.Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center.
Darjeeling (Beng. দার্জিলিং, Eng. Darjeeling, Nepalese. दार्जीलिङ) is a city in India, in the far north of West Bengal, in the eastern Himalayas at an altitude of 2185 m. Built by the British as a colonial hill station (English hill station).
Darjeeling is the coolness of India, low-floating clouds, fog, tea plantations, stunning snowy views of the Himalayas and Mount Kanchendzhang, and the surviving Tibetan Culture of the Darjeeling Self-Help Center for refugees from Tibet who followed the Dalai Lama to India in 1959. In the village there is a temple, a museum of tibet, a hand-made shop and workshops, a school. Nice to meet locals! They are different, beautiful, simple, meditative ... The place is curious! Interesting! Dive into another era! In another life!

In 1828, a delegation of the British East India Company (BEIC) officials on its way to the Nepal-Sikkim border stayed in Darjeeling and decided that the region was a suitable site for a sanatorium for British soldiers. The company negotiated a lease of the area west of the Mahananda River from the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1835. In 1849, the BEIC director Arthur Campbell and the explorer and botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker were imprisoned in the region by the Sikkim Chogyal. The BEIC sent a force to free them. Continued friction between the BEIC and the Sikkim authorities resulted in the annexation of 640 square miles (1,700 km2) of territory by the British in 1850. In 1864, the Bhutanese rulers and the British signed the Treaty of Sinchula that ceded the passes leading through the hills and Kalimpong to the British.[7] Further discord between Sikkim and the British resulted in a war, culminating in the signing of a treaty and the annexation by the British of the area east of the Teesta River in 1865. By 1866, Darjeeling district had assumed its current shape and size, covering an area of 1,234 square miles (3,200 km2).
During the British Raj, Darjeeling's temperate climate led to its development as a hill station for British residents seeking to escape the summer heat of the plains. The development of Darjeeling as a sanatorium and health resort proceeded briskly. Arthur Campbell, a surgeon with the Company, and Lieutenant Robert Napier were responsible for establishing a hill station there. Campbell's efforts to develop the station, attract immigrants to cultivate the slopes and stimulate trade resulted in a hundredfold increase in the population of Darjeeling between 1835 and 1849. The first road connecting the town with the plains was constructed between 1839 and 1842. In 1848, a military depot was set up for British soldiers, and the town became a municipality in 1850. Commercial cultivation of tea in the district began in 1856, and induced a number of British planters to settle there. Darjeeling became the formal summer capital of the Bengal Presidency after 1864. Scottish missionaries undertook the construction of schools and welfare centres for the British residents, laying the foundation for Darjeeling's notability as a centre of education. The opening of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in 1881 further hastened the development of the region. In 1899, Darjeeling was rocked by major landslides that caused severe damage to the town and the native population.
Under the British Raj, the Darjeeling area was initially a Non-Regulation District, a scheme of administration applicable to economically less advanced districts in the British India; acts and regulations of the British Raj did not automatically apply to the district in line with rest of the country. In 1919, the area was declared a backward tract. During the Indian independence movement, the Non-cooperation movement spread through the tea estates of Darjeeling. There was also a failed assassination attempt by revolutionaries on Sir John Anderson, the Governor of Bengal in 1934. Subsequently, during the 1940s, Communist activists continued the nationalist movement against the British by mobilising the plantation workers and the peasants of the district.

BENGAL NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM DARJEELING - WEST BENGAL (INDIA)
If you like to know about the fauna of Darjeeling district and that of the state, don't miss out on the Bengal Natural History Museum. It's only a few minutes downhill walk from the Chowrasta Mall. It started as a modest effort way back in 1903 when the then Governor of Bengal initiated creation of a small museum in the Botanical Gardens of Darjeeling.
A small building in the Botanical Garden was constructed at a cost of Rupees 14,000 to display only the butterflies and birds of the area. However it was too small and not good enough for the students and researchers to study the whole bird and animal life in the region. Therefore the present building was constructed in 1915 at a cost of Rupees 55,000 to satisfy such requirement.
In 1923, Bengal Natural Museum Society was formed that took charge of the management of the museum. It continued until 1976 after which the management was taken over by the Forest Department of Government of West Bengal.
During the initial days of the museum, an amateur ornithologist Charles M Inlis was the Curator of the museum. He held the post for 26 years since 1923. During his time, he had put in immense effort and built up the museum with active support from many officials including E.O. Shebbeare, The Conservator of Forest (Bengal), G.E. Shaw, The Superintendent of Cinchona Plantation, and many others.
Today the museum houses huge collection and specimens that include wide varieties of birds with nests and eggs, reptiles and fishes, mammals, insects and more. All these specimens are of real creatures that were captured and preserved. There is a special taxidermy unit in the museum which specializes in curing, staffing and rendering the birds and animals for display on the glass cabinets. This unit has been there right from the inception of the museum.
There are two large sections of the museum. One at the ground level and the other at the basement. As you enter the large room at the ground level, there are rows of glass cabinets on both sides. The first section is that of birds.
