Himeji Castle02
Himeji Castle, built in the early 17th century, represents the highest achievement in Japanese castle architecture.
Designated as a national treasure in 1931, the castle was registered as the World Cultural Heritage in 1993 as the first cultural site in Japan. The registration occurred because the castle has kept its original design at the time of construction, such as turrets, stone walls, gates, and moats, which still survive today. The main castle keep (Dai-ten-shu) connected with three small keeps (Ko-tenshu) linked by passage turrets (Watari yagura) remains perfectly in their original forms. Because of its elegant appearance totally covered with white plaster, the castle has been compared to a white bird flying off to the sky. Its famous nickname is White Heron Castle. Take enough time to tour around the castle.

Asia Travel Himeji Castle Japan
Twelfth part of my summer vacation video. Himeji Castle, UNESCO World Heritage Site, the finest surviving Japanese castle. Our wonderful tour guide asked us if we had visited any other Japanese castles, we sheepishly replied no, and she informed us that after seeing Himeji we would never have to! The castle has a very complex system of defence and ingenious protection devices, making it an impenetrable fortress. The castle doubled as a secret Ninja training school in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Music is from The Last of the Mohicans.
Welcome to Aotani 2 ~The Kobe City Museum of Literature~
We made a second movie about Kobe City Museum of Literature, located near the Kobe Oji Zoo. This museum is the oldest wooden chapel in Kobe and was converted into a museum in 2006. The interior was designed like a chapel, for example, it has a high ceiling, uncommon floor, and so on. You can see that some of the outer wall bricks are rather dark and old. They were burdened in World War II. So you can get a sense of a history by looking at the exterior and interior.

Books as objects
Wandering around the Ishikawa Museum of Modern Literature in Kanazawa, I started thinking about how it's a permissible pleasure to objectify books, even -- or especially -- books you can't understand. We're told that books are still books when they're funneled onto a Kindle, but I don't buy it. I also think old Japanese men from the Antique-Modernist period are cool.
Tadao Ando design Hyogo Museum of Art with Cafe Hyogo021 Moopon
The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is a modern and contemporary art museum found along the waterfront in the newly developed HAT Kobe district. It was built as part of the city's recovery efforts after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. It was designed by Ando Tadao, one of Japan's leading contemporary architects who has designed museums on Naoshima, Omotesando Hills and the Tokyo Sky Tree among other famous buildings.
The museum is the largest of its kind in western Japan. It hosts exhibitions of paintings, prints, sculptures and other artwork by both foreign and Japanese artists. Its permanent exhibition displays a rotating collection of modern and contemporary art and features artists with strong ties to Hyogo Prefecture. The museum also has auditoriums and event space for live music and performing arts, as well as a restaurant, cafeteria and museum shop.

Tale of Genji Museum and Uji River Cormorant Fishing (Ukai)
Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture
This journey to Uji focused on the area’s Heian roots
and particularly those places that figured in the Japanese classic,
“The Tale of Genji.” (The story itself and Japanese culture between
the 8th and 12th centuries are explained at the Tale of Genji Museum.)
The film also presented the summertime spectacle of cormorant fishing
on the Uji River with a close-up look at the dexterous skills
these women wield and the magnificence of the birds themselves.
