Visit Historic Pensacola Village
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WPMI) When youngsters Jacob, Kaitlin, McKinley and Kerstin visited Historic Pensacola Village, the siblings got a view of what it was like to live there 200 years ago.You have to use the bathroom in a pot! said Jacob. You have no privacy! wailed Kerstin.Ah, but that's exactly the kind of conversation Pensacola Historic Village is eager to ignite. It's a conversation that the kids carry over to the new kitchen building, a kitchen that would have been the best in town 200 years ago.People today are so accustomed to our current conveniences, noted Kimberly McGraw, one of the colonial period reenactors in this village.Last year she and her fellow villagers were eagerly awaiting the competition of their new kitchen. Now they can't wait to show visitors how it works. But first, they have to light a fire in the fireplace using flint and a metal striker.Miriam tries to ignite some jute with the devices, but strikes out. Kimberly steps in and, poof! There's a flame! Now they can concentrate on making bread, which takes two days.We ad our water to the yeast, Kimberly said, pouring warm water into a wooden bowl. The new fireplace beats last year's fire pit, and having a roof over the kitchen is a nice addition. It's all separate from the main house in case that fire gets out of control. Even young Jacob can reveal another reason why.The kitchen would heat up the house more, he said. And you don't want that to happen, because...When it gets too hot inside, the kids have to sleep outside, McKinley tagged. The parents get to sleep in the beds and the kids have to sleep on the floor or outside on the porch, said Kerstin. But the parents aren't lucky because it's a rope bed, McKinley quickly pointed out.And there are roaches, said Jacob.Back in the kitchen, veggies from the garden will become pickles. That still happens in a modern kitchen. Except, today, lives aren't depending on it.I ate a pickle! admitted Miriam. If she keeps that up, it's going to be a long, hungry winter! For tour times and ticket prices for Historic Pensacola Village in Downtown Pensacola, CLICK HERE.

We spent the day in downtown Pensacola and I brought the camera with me for the trip. We walk up and down Palafox Street which is the core of the downtown district with many restaurants and places to visit, working our way to the waterfront. We also went to the annual Barktoberfest in Seville Square but that will be in a separate video.
Hope you guys enjoy a little of what my home town has to offer.

Pensacola Tourism Film 1964
Tourism film by Dodson, Craddock & Born produced on film in 1964. The Spanish music--well, ALL the music, is just hilarious, and the scriptwriting old school. Be watching for the segment on the Pensacola Open (held at the Pensacola Country Club in 1964) where the narrator points out Tom Watson in the blue sweater--but it's all in black & white!!! Shows the old Casino building at Casino Beach (Pensacola Beach), Fort Pickens State Park (now Gulf Islands National Seashore) and ginormous mahogany logs dropping off the side of a huge cargo ship into the harbor to be lashed together and floated down to Bayou Chico, where they were processed at the Mahogany Mill. A fascinating look into Pensacola's past, even if some of the facts are a little sketchy....

Pensacola: City in Florida
Pensacola: City in Florida
Pensacola is a waterfront city in the north of the U.S. state of Florida. It’s separated from the Gulf of Mexico by Santa Rosa Island, and its protected beaches make it a popular holiday destination. The city was one of the earliest European settlements in the U.S., and Historic Pensacola Village is a museum complex containing original 19th-century buildings.
This narrow strip of sugar-white sand features two totally different waterfront experiences, as well as several historical and natural sites that have been preserved for hundreds of years. With only one highway and plenty of sidewalks in between the two shores, you can easily enjoy the Gulf side or opt for the serenity of the sound side. Public beaches with amenities are abundant, as well as attractions, shopping, dining opportunities, and the chance to explore preserved coastal territory.
The Pensacola Beach boardwalk is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and bars that back right up to the Santa Rosa Sound. Gentle waves, shallow, clear waters, and that famous white sand make this the ideal location for families. Bring your chairs, toys, and floats for a laid-back beach day on the northern shores of Pensacola Beach.
Anchored at the western tip of Florida, stretching miles along the Gulf of Mexico, Pensacola Beach’s mild temperature, sugar-white beaches, and crystal clear waters draw beach lovers, fishing enthusiasts and environmentalists alike.
Pensacola Beach’s atmosphere ranges from lively crowds at the main beaches with lifeguards to quiet, secluded beaches bordered by wispy sea grass. No matter what the season, beachgoers can relax on the sunny, peaceful shores of the Pensacola Beach’s award-winning, emerald-green coastline.
Located on Santa Rosa Island, one of the longest barrier islands in the world, Pensacola Beach has an old Florida feel with natural beaches, local hangouts, first-rate fishing and a historic fort.
Named Best East Coast Beach in 2016, visitors can access Gulf Islands National Seashore — the nation’s longest stretch of protected seashore — on both sides of Pensacola Beach. The secluded national park makes an ideal spot for biking, snorkeling or kayaking.
For history buffs, Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach offers a unique look into the military significance of Pensacola going back before the American Revolution. Designed and built to fortify Pensacola Harbor, the Fort is located on the very tip of Santa Rosa Island within the national seashore.
The Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier is one of the longest in the Gulf of Mexico at 1,470 feet, stretching beyond two sand bars. In addition to being a perfect vantage point for some of the most vivid sunsets you’ll ever see, the fishing pier is the perfect place to spot an abundance of marine life – including dolphins, manatees, rays, and sharks.
The Pensacola Beach Boardwalk features open-air bars and restaurants, shops, piers and shallow water for kids along the Santa Rosa Sound. Pensacola Beach also offers an array of shopping, lodging, restaurants, beach bars and entertainment – all with minimal travel, traffic, and cost.
