Russia: Tsar Nicolas II's cars on display at Oldtimer Gallery in Moscow
Antique Russian cars were exhibited at the Oldtimer Gallery in Moscow, Saturday, to mark the 110th anniversary of the Imperial Garage, and to show the first automobiles that were used and produced in the Russian Empire.
Two cars owned by Tsar Nicolas II of the Delaunay-Belleville company were also presented at the exhibition. One of them, a convertible, was used by the Imperial family in summer, while a second one was used in winter. According to the organisers, Delaunay-Belleville was one of the Emperor’s favourite car producers.
SOT, Ilya Sorokin, Project Head, Oldtimer Gallery, (Russian): This time the Oldtimer Gallery dedicated an exhibition to the first motors of Russia. [When we say] the first motors, we mean the cars of the first Russian production, with which the Russian auto industry started. And by the first Russian motors, we also mean the motors of the high exponents of the Russian Empire.

Soviet-era luxury cars on parade for Victory Day
(8 May 2017) LEADIN:
Soviet-era luxury cars are taking centre stage at the Victory Day parade in the city which made them.
The Volga and Chaika cars are symbols of the old Soviet elite and were produced by carmaker GAZ at its factory in Nizhny Novgorod.
STORYLINE:
Rehearsing for the big day, these luxury cars are a link with this city's Soviet past.
Here in Nizhny Novgorod, the Volga and Chaika executive cars will take centre stage at the military parade for Victory Day on Tuesday (9 May).
The Soviet-era cars used to be owned almost exclusively by bureaucrats and celebrities.
For the ordinary man on the street in Soviet times, these vehicles represented the height of luxury and style.
Nizhny Novgorod is now the only city in Russia where these vehicles are used in the Victory Day Parade, because the cars were produced here at the GAZ automobile factory.
On parades in Red Square in Moscow, military commanders would be driven in executive cars made by the manufacturer ZIL, a tradition that still continues today.
Nowadays, these classic cars are kept in a garage and only used for special occasions.
These cars are stored individually. For the winter they are covered with special covers, they are parked on pads. Every month the cars are serviced, the machines are polished, examined for rust or defects. We have an individual approach for these cars, says Alexander Bolshakov, who is head of the transport department at Nizhny Novgorod regional government's motor depot.
Bolshakov says that, with care like this, these cars can live forever.
The very first car assembled for use at parades and other formal occasions is preserved in the museum of the Gorky Automobile Plant.
That car is the Chaika, which was the predecessor of the Volga.
This car was built by order of the Ministry of Defence for military parades and other military ceremonies. Not in Red Square, but in various military districts, says Natalia Lukina, the leading specialist at the Gorky Automobile Plant's museum.
In our museum there is the first prototype of such cars. It was built in the late 1970s, and then two cars for each military district were collected by hand. So, in total there are 14 cars of this type.
Out on the road, this car attracts everyone's attention, but it's not the easiest car to drive.
It's more difficult to drive the Volga. We drive a tank every day, but this car is driven only on special occasions. While you are driving you need to concentrate, to understand that it is a holiday and perform your best, says Senior Sergeant Sergey Odintsov, as he takes the car out on parade.
Held on May 9, Victory Day is traditionally widely celebrated in Russia and is usually marked with a huge military parade in Moscow as well as other cities.
Victory Day marks Russia's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Here I present the first part of two sets of photographs taken at the end of the 19th century of one of the oldest shipbuilding companies in Russia, based in the Sormovo district of Nizhny Novgorod. Founded in 1849 the company Nizhny Novgorod Machine Factory and the Volga-Kama towing and imported Shipping as a diversified company responsible for ....the execution of public contracts.....
Starting with the construction of steam vessels with wooden hulls, the factory moved quickly to steamers and barges with iron plating. The demands of the plant were both for military and civilian orders.
In 1908-1913 the production of even more expanded, produced ships, ferries, Russia's first marine diesel tanker convoy for filling oil field Bibi Heybat Bay (near Baku).

SUMMARY
=======
Moscow (; Russian: Москва́, tr. Moskvá, IPA: [mɐˈskva] (listen)) is the capital and most populous city of Russia, with 13.2 million residents within the city limits and 17 million within the urban area. Moscow is one of Russia's federal cities.
Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, and scientific centre of Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the largest city (both by population and by area) entirely on the European continent. By broader definitions Moscow is among the world's largest cities, being the 14th largest metro area, the 18th largest agglomeration, the 14th largest urban area, and the 11th largest by population within city limits worldwide. According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the ninth most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the world's largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and is also one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
Moscow is the northernmost and coldest megacity and metropolis on Earth. It is home to the Ostankino Tower, the tallest free standing structure in Europe; the Federation Tower, the second-tallest skyscraper in Europe; and the Moscow International Business Center. By its territorial expansion on July 1 2012 southwest into the Moscow Oblast, the area of the capital more than doubled, going from 1,091 to 2,511 square kilometers (421 to 970 sq mi), resulting in Moscow becoming the largest city on the European continent by area; it also gained an additional population of 233,000 people.Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, making it Europe's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its architecture, particularly its historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its colourful architectural style. With over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, it is one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world, having the largest forest in an urban area within its borders—more than any other major city—even before its expansion in 2012.
The city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union and the contemporary Russian Federation.
Moscow is the seat of power of the Government of Russia, being the site of the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence for work of the President of Russia. The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are also one of several World Heritage Sites in the city. Both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in the city. Moscow is considered the centre of Russian culture, having served as the home of Russian artists, scientists and sports figures and because of the presence of museums, academic and political institutions and theatres.
The city is served by a transit network, which includes four international airports, nine railway terminals, numerous trams, a monorail system and one of the deepest underground rapid transit systems in the world, the Moscow Metro, the fourth-largest in the world and largest outside Asia in terms of passenger numbers, and the busiest in Europe. It is recognised as one of the city's landmarks due to the rich architecture of its 200 stations.Moscow has acquired a number of epithets, most referring to its size and preeminent status within the nation: The Third Rome (Третий Рим), the Whitestone One (Белокаменная), the First Throne (Первопрестольная), the Forty Soroks (Сорок Сороков) (sorok meaning both forty, a great many and a district or parish in Old Russian).
Moscow is also one of the twelve Hero Cities. The demonym for a Moscow res ...
