Alaskan Perseverance Ale - Celebrating 25 Years of Brewing Alaskan
Alaskan Brewing Co. has been quietly brewing award-winning beer in the remote coastal town of Juneau, Alaska for the last 25 years. To celebrate this tradition the Alaskan Brew Crew created Perseverance Ale - a Russian Imperial Stout that is big, bold and a tribute to all that makes our beers truly Alaskan. 20150808: Day 62, Disembarking AMH's M/V Kennicott
Saturday, 8 August 2015. Day 62 of our Alaska road trip. We began our Alaska bucket list adventure departing Lakewood, CO on the 8th of June, 2015 completing the trip on the 13th of August, 2015. We travelled 6,586 miles by road, and another 1,629 miles by the Alaskan Marine Highway ferry M/V Kennicott for a total of 8,215 miles. Our road miles were captured through the use of a Cobra Dash Cam, in addition to having captured much of the remainder of the trip along the way using Sony HD Video Camcorders. The hundreds of hours of video will be published to YouTube, parsed out by special events along the way. This video is the first...albeit happened near the end of our journey.
8 August 2015: Disembarking from the AMH M/V Kennicott at Bellingham, WA.
We loaded our Fun Finder 25' trailer and our tow vehicle (Tahoe) on an Alaska Marine Highway ferry, the Kennicott, on the 3rd of August, 2015 at Whittier, Alaska bound for Bellingham, WA. We had to back the trailer into the vessel at Whittier...a hairy proposition!
On Saturday the 8th of August, 2015 we finally docked Bellingham at 06:30 Hrs. (Ship's time, 07:30 Bellingham time) after a 1,629 mile journey through the inside passage. We began disembarking at 06:45. This video is of the disembarkation process from the Kennicott.
Notice the turntable near the exit ramp. It is designed to work in concert with a built in elevator that can hoist a vehicle into the air to enable discharging it through a side portal opening!
Take note of the Dash Cam video's tagging in the lower right-hand corner of the video showing date, time, and GPS coordinates showing our location. While on the ferry's car deck, there was no GPS coordinate capture, so that area remained blank until we emerged from the ferry.
We've uploaded a companion video: Embarking the Kennicott at the following link:
Alaska: A Surprise Birthday Gift For My Dad
For a Christmas and 60th birthday gift my siblings and I surprised my dad with an all expenses paid trip of a lifetime to Alaska. As you can see it definitely caught him off guard and was a little emotional at the magnitude of the surprise. My old man is not an adventurous soul and we were questioning whether this would be the best place to take him.
We ended up arriving 7/22/17 and stayed until 7/31/17. Started our trip in anchorage whereby we rented BMW motorcycles from Alaska motorcycle adventures and drove to Homer where we went to a seaside restaurant (yellow walls) and then for a quick stop in the famous salty dog saloon.
The following day we made it to Hope which is an enchanting little town that feels like its at the end of the world. We finally said good bye to the motorcycles back in anchorage and drove to Valdez alaska (My personal favorite place in alaska) and spoiled ourselves on great local cuisine stellar views and souvenirs. From Valdez, where you can see tons of waterfalls, bear, sea lions and other wild life, we made our way to Klutina river near the copper center where we booked a king salmon charter with klutina salmon charters (amazing guides). My dad, brother and I each caught two splendid kings but my dads girlfriend caught the short end of the stick. bellies full, we traveled to Fairbanks where we visited some family and finally down to Healy and Denali National Park. Simply put, this place is magical and you owe it to yourself to visit. Bus tour of any sort is recommended. Tons of wildlife abounds and the views are some of the best our planet offers. Check out the 49th state brewing company for hardy food and interesting scene and lively people.
Overall, this trip was enjoyed by all, even my dad. I always say everyone owes it to themselves to visit alaska once before they die for a multitude of reasons. Epic family trip.
Happy 60 years to my old man.
