Homer, Alaska's Gull Island--A Short Tour
Homer, Alaska's Gull Island Rookery is home to eight species of seabirds. It is a popular tour in summer for both tourists and locals. The Pratt Museum maintains a live webcam on the island during summer. A visit to the museum in Homer allows visitors to control the camera to see birds on the island, in the water, and even in their burrows. Check the museum's website for more information on their webcams.

Homer Alaska Cruise Ship Shuttle to Spit from Port (4K)
Homer Alaska was one of the ports our cruise ship visited during a 14 day cruise. Holland America provided shuttle transportation (in the form of school buses) that hauled guests from the dock to the famous Spit area of town. This is what the ride was like. It took maybe 7 or 8 minutes. You can even see some travelers walking back. The buses run pretty often so the wait to get to the Spit or return to the cruise ship was usually less than 10 minutes from what we observed.
This was from our June 2017 Alaska cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam. See our Homer Alaska video tour of the Spit, shopping, the beach & the city of Homer port & harbor marina here:

Alaska - Anchorage City 2017
Where in the heck is Girdwood? And why would we go there?
We left Homer, heading north, unsure of our destination. We knew we were going to stop in Girdwood for a hike and Anchorage for groceries. We still hadn't decided if we were going to head back south toward Valdez first or just start our descent back down out of Alaska.
Our first stop was Girdwood. We had heard about an easy hike that had a hand tram over a river. This sounded cool, so we headed that way. Doug and Emmett stayed behind in the RV, which was a good choice because it was a muddy, slippery trail. It was raining and we got wet. As we approached the hand tram there were a bunch of people with lots of camera equipment. We asked the first what they were doing and she said, making a film. I guess we had already figured that one out. The second person we asked a more direct question, What is your film about? He thought he had a pretty good sense of humor and said Mayonnaise. We finally asked a third and he said it was a UCLA college thesis project. Anyway, there were a bunch of people and they pulled us across the hand tram, which was nice because it was a long way and it's heavy to pull. It was awesome, well worth the hike in the rain.
We were still debating on whether or not to go the extra 120 miles to check out Valdez. We took a vote and it was 50/50. The weather wasn't looking good, cold and rainy. We searched on the internet to see what we'd be missing. Besides checking out a new place and the beach the thing the kids would like the most would be the fish hatchery. The salmon are spawning and heading upstream back to the hatchery to lay their eggs. And since there are so many salmon there are also seals looking for a meal. This would be cool to see but with the not so great gas mileage we get in the RV, it would cost us about an extra $150 in gas, plus 2 days of driving. We've seen a lot of seals and salmon and hatcheries, so we decided a better option would be to spend a couple days in the Largest National Park.
So we headed to Anchorage on our way to Wrangell St. Elias. In the travel magazines the kids saw an Ulu factory tour. It was more of a gift shop, but they did get to see how the Ulu knives are made. We also took a trolley to the federal building where they were able to get a couple more Jr. Ranger badges and do a scavenger hunt. Then we headed to Costco and filled the fridge and cupboards and had some pizza for lunch. And drove some more before ending our day with a delicious salmon dinner in the Winnebago in the parking lot of Wasilla Walmart.
Next stop, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Alaska Tour - Fairbanks, AK - Stop #11
Today we drove from Tok, Ak to Faribanks, AK with a short stop Rika's Roadhouse for lunch. We also got a tour of the Cabin Museums and our first peek at the Alaskan Pipeline!
On our drive, we saw a Moose splashing around in a pond, and Jeannie got a few pictures out the window as we were driving by! We then stopped at North Pole, AK and visited the Christmas Shop and sat on Santa's lap!
The next day we got a Fairbanks City Tour with a stop at an excellent Alaskan Pipeline viewing area where you could actually touch the pipe! It is HUGE, over 48 in diameter with an insulated metal jacket. After that we went aboard the Discover III for a river cruise to the Chena Village with many Indian huts and cabins. Here we learned about a Fish Wheel that floats on the river and spins using the current and automatically catches Salmon as they swim upstream -- very cool!
That night we went to an Alaskan Salmon Bake with some of the best Salmon you could ever eat! The following day we visited a couple of Museums, including the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. This car museum was unbelievable, and had many one-of-a-kind cars from the turn of the century! This is a must see in Fairbanks!!

Riverbend Ponds, Fort Collins - In A Colorado Minute (Week 325)
- - The Riverbend Ponds Natural Area in Fort Collins is just one of many oases found within the city limits. But it's one of my favorites. Riverbend Ponds Natural Area hovers on the north-east side of the Cache la Poudre River where it bends from flowing east to flowing south. The 218 square acres of Riverbend Ponds Natural Area include seven ponds and supposedly 200 species of birds! You can see a heron and a black and white pelican in this video... and a dragonfly!
Conveniently for Fort Collins fishing, the ponds are stocked by Colorado Parks and Wildlife with bass, wiper, bluegill, black crappie, and channel catfish. And I've personally seen huge carp in the large pond. Oh, and a humongous turtle. Here is a great list of all the Fort Collins ponds and the native and stocked fish.
The seven ponds on this side of the river were originally gravel pits created from the 1950s to the 1970s. I presume the same is true for all the ponds on the other side of the river that make up the Cattail Chorus Natural Area and Kingfisher Point Natural Area.
For this video, I only filmed around the three most northern ponds (Turtle Pond, Trout Pond and ?) and along the Poudre River. This is not a comprehensive video, just an impression. Most notably, I left out the largest pond and the wetlands to the east.
The Riverbend Ponds are accessible on the north end via Timberline, on the south end via Prospect Road, by riding your bike along the Poudre Trail and on an inner tube by cruising down the river.
One of my favorite places in all of Fort Collins is the rocky beach you can see in the last shots of the video. I discovered it and named it No Booze Riverbend last year, when Judith and Christoph were visiting from Berlin and we stopped by there... without booze, naturally. Ah, the lovely memories made in this spot with friends and Whiskey dog.
I love coming to the Riverbend Ponds at any time of year - as long as I never run into that woman with those aggressive German shepherds again.
The song in this video is called Rainy Day and was written and performed by my dear friend Hollie Greer, who currently plays in the band As Is ( in Gainesville, Florida. Thank you for the beautiful song, Hollie. I think it fits quite well on a sunny day, too.

To any big city dweller, anchorage seems like a small town,
yet fully half the population of this immense state
resides here. This gives you some idea how
Sparsely populated the rest of the state is.
despite it's small size by lower 48 standards,
Anchorage has its share of city husle and bustle.
The city of anchorage dates back to the late 19th
Century when it was a tent city for gold miners and fur trappers.
fur trapping is still a major industry in alaska,
And anchorage is the central marketplace for some
Of the most exotic and high quality furs in the world.
The fur rendezvous celebration that takes place
In anchorage each winter , has been called the
mardi gras of the north . It evolved from a gathering
of fur trappers to a rip-roaring celebration which
Features such delightful events as outhouse and canoe races.
In addition to furs, anchorage offers unique opportunities
To buy native art and craft items from throughout the state.
To the alaskan native, art was, and is a way of life.
every object used in the routines of daily life
Was turned into an object of art.
Scrimshaw, ceremonial masks, and ivory carvings
Are but a few of the art forms available in these shops.
There's no shortage of things to do in anchorage.
For the more adventuruos spirit, an evening ballon ride
Provides an unforgetable experience.
(there are several commercial balloon ride concessions
offering these rides to visitors, and the sky above
anchorage is dotted with these colorful forms drifting
Silently across the sky almost every evening during the
Summer months.
