Crescent Falls Alberta | Frozen Winter Wonderland
See the beautiful Crescent Falls frozen and covered in ice! The hike to see this world renown set of falls is simply exquisite in winter!
We journeyed out to Crescent Falls Alberta for some winter hiking and it was well worth it! We had the entire falls to ourselves, not a tourist in sight (except for us). The waterfalls were covered in ice with water still flowing beneath. If you go to Crescent Falls in winter make sure to bring crampons so you can easily walk on the ice without slipping.
Crescent Falls Directions:
If you’re coming from Edmonton, take Highway 11 West from Rocky Mountain House, through Nordegg until you get to Abraham Lake. If you’re coming from Calgary it’s faster to drive through Banff National Park until you get to Highway 11. It's a 3.5hr drive from Edmonton and a 4hr drive from Calgary. Crescent Falls is located 3kms off the David Thompson Highway (Highway 11) at the end of Crescent Falls Campground road.

Trunk Road - Nordegg to Coalspur, Alberta - Hwy 734 & 40 - Timelapse
Trunk road from Nordegg to Coalspur turnoff, Alberta. On my way to Hinton, I could have taken the nice paved road but adventure awaits. Part way in I was debating turning around as it was fog, rain, and lots of mud. Almost ditched it a few times. Was I glad to see pavement! Will have to get another video of this road in the dry summer as there is some nice views of the back country.
Nordegg is a hamlet in west-central Alberta, Canada within Clearwater County.[1] It is located in the North Saskatchewan River valley in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, just east of the intersection of the David Thompson Highway and the Highway 734 spur of the Bighorn Highway (the Forestry Trunk Road). A former coal-mining town, it was named after Martin Nordegg and the name probably means North Corner in a German dialect.
Coalspur was established during the construction of the Alberta Coal Branch, a spur line of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (later the Canadian National Railway) during 1911-1912. Located where the east and west lines diverged, it was home to the railroad construction camp and became a transport hub with a roundhouse and repair shops. It later became the headquarters for the Brazeau Forest Reserve and the Alberta Provincial Police.[1]
Soon after the railroad arrived in 1912, a group of British financiers founded the Yellowhead Pass Coal and Coke Company.[2] The original Yellowhead Mine near Coalspur employed 70 men, produced 500 tons of coal per day, and sustained the small community. At the peak of production the mine employed 400 men.[3] A massive underground fire occurred in 1915[4] and again in 1922. The mine closed in 1923, although other mines in the area continued to operate until the 1950s.[1]
One of the earliest oil wells in the central Alberta foothills was drilled near Coalspur. In 1924 Imperial Oil sank a test well near the community, and discovered a significant flow of natural gas that was used to heat boilers in the mining camp. No commercial quantity of petroleum was found however, and drilling ceased near Coalspur,[5] although several natural gas fields were later discovered in the Coal Branch area.[1]
The population throughout the Coal Branch area declined during the 1950s as the railroads replaced steam locomotives with diesel, and the mines closed due to lack of markets. The Coalspur post office, which opened in 1914, closed in 1963. Today the community is home to a dozen or so residents.

The video features the diverse landscapes of the National Forests and Grasslands, and the dedicated employees who care for the land and serve people.
Hull Mountain Snow Drive
Took a drive up Hull Mountain in Mendocino National Forest during a recent low elevation snow storm. Ended up only driving up to about 4,800 feet before parking it, since I was alone and didn't want to push my luck too much. I then used my splitboard to ski the remaining 2,000 vertical feet up to the 6,800 foot summit, which still didn't have much snow compared to normal for this time of year.
Also in the beginning of the video I included a shot of Lake Pillsbury on the way up that is at only about 15% capacity because of the drought conditions we are experiencing. Should be doing much better after the last round of storms I think though. Looking forward to getting back up there after some more good storm action.

Great Canadian Parks #22- Willmore Wilderness Park, Alta
This Park is situated in west central Alberta, sandwiched between the B.C. border, Jasper National Park & the Continental Divide. It’s landscape is typical Rocky Mountain, with foothills & mountainous terrain. Peaks along the Continental Divide exceed 3,000 meters in elevation. The park is home to bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, black & grizzly bears and about 600 woodland caribou.
Gorman Lake Golden BC
There are a number of great hikes around the Golden BC area. One of them is into Gorman Lake. The drive is about 45 minutes down a forestry road. You have to go slow because of the road conditions. Then from the trail head, it is a relatively easy 45 minute hike into a gorgeous mountain lake. It is a great fishing lake too. From there you can hike into a number of other valleys. Well worth the hike on a great day. Very few people at the best of times.

LOG HOMES OVER 200 YEARS OLD ~ STILL STANDING!
OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY There is a reason we built our log home out of white oak. Some of the homes in this video are over 200 years old

A log cabin is a dwelling constructed of logs, especially a less finished or architecturally sophisticated structure. Log cabins have an ancient history in Europe, and in America are often associated with first generation home building by settlers.
With suitable tools, a log cabin can be erected from scratch in days by a family. As no chemical reaction is involved, such as hardening of mortar, a log cabin can be erected in any weather or season. Many older towns in Northern Scandinavia have been built exclusively out of log houses, which have been decorated by board paneling and wood cuttings.

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.
