How to load a mule: Horseback riding mountain camping in the Andes near Santiago, Chile
Chilean arrieros prepare for a horseback ride into the Andes mountains near Santiago for a camping trip, With thanks to Rigo and Leo, expert arrieros living and working in the foothills of the Andes in the Cajon del Maipo, near Santiago, Chile.

Mule camping
Horse riding with camping in the Andes mountains near Santiago depends on having not only horses but also mules. Mules are used to carry the heavy loads of food and drink and camping equipment -- tents, sleeping bags, air-mattresses - needed for even just one night's camping. There are no roads in this part of the mountains, apart from an occasional badly rutted and damaged track just passable with a powerful 4X4 vehicle. Horses are not used much in Chile as pack animals as they are mostly too valuable and also not as agile or strong as mules. Mules are bred from a donkey father and a horse mother and they cannot reproduce. The 'machos' or males are especially strong and can carry 120 kilos or more 0n their backs.
However, they have to be skilfully loaded to make the baggage secure and to avoid giving the mules sores from the rubbing of the ropes and harness. Arrieros, Chilean cowboys, must have this skill, which distinguishes them from others who may be excellent horsemen but cannot handle mules. Mules are also more temperamental and bad tempered than horses. They can be dangerous to riders on horseback along the trail, as they tend to bash around knocking things with the loads that they are carrying. If it is a big ride with several mules they will probably travel separately with a muleteer, to keep them out of the way of the riders. However, the joys of camping in the mountains cannot be experienced without some trustworthy hard-working mules to take up all the equipment. When we go on long rides we take everything with us. Dozens of cans of beer, boxes of wine and pisco sour, water for the tourists, all food for several days, sometimes feed for the horses and mules although at certain times of year these can be let loose overnight on the mountainside to forage for themselves.
The mules tend to attach themselves to a mare, who is known as the 'madrina' or godmother. She wears a bell round her neck so that the mules can be found if they have wandered a little way in search of pasture. If it is thought that they will wander, perhaps because there is not much grazing, she may be tied up so that they will not stray too far. Mules are said to be very comfortable to ride and more sure footed than horses. For that reason although tourists are not usually given them as mounts, you may well see and arriero guide riding on a mule. The paths are steep and sometimes narrow, in between rocks. There are few wide trails as in mountains which may be more accessible, less wild, than the Andes. This is difficult for the heavily laden mules. Sometimes the men take them on a different and easier route, perhaps going further round difficult parts of the trek to make it possible for the mules.
Camping on horseback in the Andes mountains is a pleasure almost impossible to describe, and it is not really possible without mules and men who know how to load them skilfully. . Although not all our rides go up to within touch of the snow we have special rides that do. The mule in our video is not blindfolded as it is a very quiet and rather old mule, but it is actually customary to blindfold them before loading as they react badly if they see a load approaching, but do not seem to mind as long as they do not see it. A true arriero often has a piece of cloth tied round his waist, for use with mules.
Because the skill with mules is rare and also important, the sign of a true arriero, we take you with 'arrieros de la zona'. They are local skilled cowboys with long experience with mules, learnt as boys on journeys with their fathers who were almost always arrieros as well. They worked horses and mules when agriculture depended on those methods. They also worked for the mines in the Andes, of which there were many, carrying materials up and down in tricky terrain. There are still mines of copper, and yeso. In the old days there were even small gold mines as well, and many small family mines. These have mostly gone and are replaced by big international conglomerates with roads and heavy machinery.
Our rides with mules and horses take place in other parts of the mountains near Santiago where heavy machinery cannot pass and most tracks are not much wider than a metre at most. In winter the snow is on the surrounding peaks and the views are spectacular.

FAMILY TRIPS ON HORSEBACK
Our guide Rigo gives a lesson in lassoing to a young visitor, and then shows him how it is done. This took place on a ride with horseridingchile.com. We thought of calling it 'How to lasso your child' as the child ends up caught by our arriero head guide, Rigo. This took place on a family ride into the Andes near Santiago. Horse riding in the Cajon del Maipo - the green lung of Santiago Chile is a wonderful experience and can be tailored to suit families with young children, first-time riders and also the experienced riders who want to ride faster and further into the beautiful landscapes and scenery of these mountains.
CAMPING VACATIONS ON HORSEBACK - one night or more
We also take camping trips which can go further and higher into the mountains and give a special experience of sleeping under the amazing stars of the Andes of South America. Chile has some of the clearest skies in the world and although we are near Santiago, the night skies are amazing. We always stop and set up camp near a river or mountain stream so that there is water for the horses and for cooking round the campfire. In some seasons it is possible to bathe and even do a little fishing with artesan type equipment. On longer trips into the mountains the lasso is used for real as the horses are left out at night often, to graze freely. They need to be caught in the morning, sometimes involving exciting theatre as the guides use their lassos.
OUTDOORS IN THE ANDES
Here in the Cajon del Maipo near Santiago Chile the Andes, one of the youngest and highest mountain chains, are at their most accessible. We take Day Rides out of the city, things to do and an experience of the real Chile in the country, outdoors. We also sometimes go higher into the mountains where the adventure includes multiple colours of minerals in the rocks, cold lakes to bathe in and in summer myriad flowers and, near water, birds. Sometimes there is time to visit the Hot Springs of Colina as well - or on another day.

GH5 Cinematic - My Brother and I have always dreamed of riding horses across South America and when we stumbled upon some crazy photos of the Chilean Cowboy Danilo online we knew we had to commit to this idea.
We spent 10 days helping a real Arriero (Chilean Cowboy) move 56 of his semi-wild horses 300km from his farm at a low elevation to another pasture at 9000ft in the Chilean Andes. We had no horse experience before this trip and it turned into one of the most memorable trips of our life. This is a glimpse into our time on this adventure.

Horseback Riding in the Chilean Andes
Horseback riding down the mountain at the Cascada de las Animas nature preserve an hour outside Santiago, Chile (January, 10 2009).
Horse Ride Through El Toyo Chile
Leonal the Chilean Cowboy takes me for a ride through the valleys and streams, up the mountains to the spot! This is the Andes God Dammit ! My first time on a horse and it was nothing short of being thrown in the deep end, loved it. Bit of BBQ!. Just a tiny bit of footage as this was a 2 day trip but the trip its self was pretty full on, step cliffs, crazy cactus, loco peros, condors, hippies, naked hippies and no noise, real tranquility nothing but the wind blowing in your face and the beast beneath.

[S2 - Eps. 25] Discover Torres del Paine National Park, Chile
In this episode I am riding through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. This is some of the best scenery Patagonia has to offer - and I was very lucky with the weather. I started the ride from Puerto Natales and ended in Cerro Castillo, right at the border with Argentina. A total of 213 kilometers through stunning landscapes!

Travel Chile - Visit a Chilean Rodeo in Santiago
Meet the Chilean cowboy and learn what makes the Chilean Rodeo unique.
Right now we are in Pirque, a little countryside inside the city limits of Santiago. And what we are going to see is a typical national rodeo. The Chilean cowboys hold a lasso, now he has to have his own horse, his hat sombrero, the jacket polainas and his spurs or espuelas. This is an essential park of the huaso outfit, it is the estribo, it is hand part, and it has always made of one piece of wood. Each huaso has its own.
The contest works like this: two huasos work in a team to push the bull against the wall, depending on how and where they push the bull against the wall, they are awarded a different amount of point, the most you can get is thirteen points, you lose points for any mistake. The rodeo stadium is called the media luna, literally half moon, and you can find it all over the whole Chile.
Wow, this is really exciting! Just to watch them control the horses and the bull, this is the exciting part, when they come right next to you. The rodeo is great fun for the whole family, but be warned, you will see a lot of bull get shaved violently against the wall. Right now, I am outside the media luna where you can find a stand to find everything you need to be an authentic Chilean huaso. This is a typical Chilean saddle, it is handmade each and every piece and you can find them as I said, outside of each rodeo. Right here we have mantas, natural sheep wool dyed in tree fiber. This is another necessity for the Chilean huaso, these are the spurs. These are antique, they are over a hundred years old, look at the craftsmanship.
How long it takes to make this children chupalla? A day? A week? No. It takes a whole month of handwork. The rodeo lasts all day, but there is a break for lunch, where you can enjoy typical Chilean food anywhere near by. It is really hard to believe that we are only forty five minutes away from down town Santiago. You can get to Pirque on public transportation or a cab. Rodeo stay place all year around on weekends, but their locations change so ask before you go. Now I am really excited because the next round up is my husband. I am Helia Goodman showing you Santiago.

Chilean Road Trip and Andes-Pacifico Pre-ride | Syd and Macky TV Episode 9
In this episode, we head up to Santiago for our first race of the season, the Montenbaik Andes Pacifico 5-day enduro. Along the way, we decide to try to find some swimming holes that we first visited back in 2012, our first time in South America. Because we like to keep things exciting for you guys, Macky manages to hurt himself before we even get to Santiago!
The next day we head to La Parva bike park to pre-ride the terrain that we will be encountering during the race. Holy crap it's epic out there!! And the anti-grip is real, as Syd discovered.
So glad to be able to share this craziness with you all :) :)

Horseback riding with RAF Ski Team who visited Chile this winter.
We like like to say a big thanks to the RAF Ski Team for making this such a fun trip this winter. We normally don't take people into the mountains in winter but when the RAF called we thought we could make an exception.
We camped for one night in the mountains surrounding the Cajon del maipo, south east of Santiago in Chile.
